WHY WE CANT KEEP OUR CURRENT CHARACTERS

now this is just a thought guardians. the coding that is our characters in the game is embedded quite deeply in the lines so and here is my thought... if we carry over characters from the previous game into the new game same goes for weapons and armor, the code would have to follow. so... if the problem is embedded in the code and its brought over to the new game then it could bring problems into the new game. as far as I know there is no way to sequester embedded lines of code, bring them into a new codex and nothing bad happens. I don't even know if its possible to bring old code into new code while keeping it sterile. someone who is more into coding then I would have to prove or disprove this point. ive been here since the alpha same as a lot of you. I don't want to loose my characters however if I must then so be it. but I request something in destiny 2 for all the money I spent and time I dedicated to this game... and im not saying a damn shader or emblem

  • If they don't carry, my Destiny journey will finally be over. I love it but I've never invested this much time in a single game before. The money is trivial compared to my hours spent. It'll be fun to play some games I can finish in a month and be done with it completely.

Losing your character is going to be painful. Especially since Bungie stated a million times before and after it launched, that your characters would follow you through the whole 10 year cycle of 3 games. If your a day one player, you will remember this well. As for people saying that: No game lets you take your characters with you because it's a new game. These are the people that will be watering their plants with Gatorade in the near future. Apparently no one has heard of Mass Effect? This is why Call of Duty millennials should stick to Call of Duty. Edit: I'd like to add that, this game is GOING INTO its 3rd year. I see all of these thread post all over the forums that mention 3 years, it's only been 2, because maths.

    • I don't mind loosing gear, and I don't really mind loosing subclasses too much, but my characters need to transfer over, if only in appearance. These are the three that saved the Last City, the Traveler, and the Reef from everything from alien pirates to elder gods. I've played as them for three years now. I've spent actual money buying emotes to make each one different not only in play style and appearance, but personality as well. Odd as it is, I've grown a bit attached to them. As far as destiny sequels go, it just wouldn't feel the same without them. :/

      • Darling gear never was, and never will be carried over. No game goes "let's use up half our asset space on our last game's guns and armour so people can complain we are lazy and didn't want to make a lot of guns" no if our character transfers over we will start at level one with the same gear as if someone bought destiny 2 and never played 1. We may get a nice shader or emblem but nothing else.

All we are going to keep is our character's face. Its the simple solution to what everyone is asking for while giving us a new game. Major cutscene of some crazy battle that goes very wrong. We lose all our weapons and gear in a crash of some sort but walk out with our equipped armor broken and unusable. The lines of communication have been cut off with the vanguard and there is no way to transmat our stored gear. We will have no ship and possibly no ghost for a while. That is how you carry your character over to a new game without the need to supply us with all our gear. It is at this point if you don't want to keep your characters face you can opt to have him die in the crash and start as a new guardian.

        • I think your right but I was thinking can't you link the account so your level transfers and character but then you get a code from said linking and the code gives you a start armour And weapons that sets you at a certain light? Like maybe say 100 then set the max at say 250 then keep doing what they recently did just set a new light level and level with dlc?

Because it's a different game, a different disc. Nearly No game has let you move characters from one game to a completely other game. Destiny 2 will probably be on another game engine (a better one you would hope) etc Also it's just logic that everyone starts at the same point, point zero

            • This isn't the -blam!-ing matrix. It would be truly doable to carry over content to a new game, especially since character data is stored on bungo's servers. It wouldn't "infect" the new game or however you want to put it. It makes more financial sense to make players start from scratch so they can con players to spend more on microtransactions. Because people are actually stupid enough to spend more money on a game they have dumped $120+ on already.

            • I hope nothing moves forward. Its a NEW game. If you want current characters and weapons they might as will just do another update. A new gane with completely different subclasses and weapons would be a breath of fresh air.

            • Ok, first of all, we don't know anything about Destiny 2. It was just a rumour. Anyway, as a developer, I can't confidently say that the "embedded code" thing is nonsense. There is no code for a character. There are no lines of code in Destiny about your character, or mine. A character is data, its information is in some kind of database and it's linked to your account. Carrying characters over to another game has nothing to do with carrying over code, it's about bringing the data. That could have problems too, of course, it would depend on a lot of things. For all we know, the new game could have completely different classes, items, a whole different database, so a complete transfer could be complicated or even not make any sense. That said, I don't have a strong feeling in this debate. I hope Destiny 2 will have a lot of new and different things, and if that means my guardian will be left behind, so be it, he had a good run.

              • I hope we can recreate our characters at least. I would love a fresh start. Losing everything I earned would definitely suck but new weapons and armor would be cool too. The thing that will upset me the most is losing all the subclasses. If we lose all the current ones completely I'll definitely wait a week or two until after D2 releases to see if the new ones are worth it or not. If they keep the current ones and add new ones I'll definitely pre order.

                • That's not how that would work. They wouldn't actually transfer lines of code. If they were to transfer characters they would read certain variable values saved in relation to your character such as your visible customization choices, gear, etc, and then apply that info to a blank character template on Destiny 2 to recreate your character. Also your character is a state of a template saved on your console and in the cloud, not actual lines of code, more like a series of variable values.

                  • Kust make sure you can at least recreate your character as close as possible to what it is now. I'm sad my character wont be the main character after all the things they have done to save humanity.

There are many many many reasons why our characters won't carry over. Just think about any mmorpg or RPG or action game or adventure game. When you take all of those games and add them up how many of them really allowed you to full 100% carry over your character from it's predecessor? LIKE 3-4%!!!!!! There are almost zero games out there that have ever allowed you to carry over your character from one game to the next. I hate bungie and almost every decision they make relating to Destiny but this decision Has been the wrong choice. You just can't bring all of your characters as they are into a totally new game. It just cannot happen.

                      • Why dont we have 2 lists of characters? Destiny one in one list. Destiny two in the other list. That way, we dont lose our characters?
