Idea to cleanse Thorn and Create the exotic hand cannon "Rose"

A coworker and I came up with the concept of a new hand cannon after reading the lore about Thorn and The Last Word. Basically, Dregdon Yor's barely remaining light would guide you to recreate his trusted Rose and help restore the name that he once held. Here is the questline concept that we came up with. Destiny Exotic Primary Weapon Hand Cannon "Rose… by any other name" Pre-requisite Must possess Exotic Primary Weapon, Hand Cannon, Thorn Must have 1,000 non-guardian primary kills with the Exotic Primary Weapon, Hand Cannon, Thorn Must be Level 40 Must have Vanguard Reputation of 25 or higher Must have all Grimoire Cards for Thorn Once all pre-requisites are meet, the next time the guardian (player) selects the destination for the Tower; Earth, Last City, and has Thorn equipped, there will be a cut seen to the ship cockpit (crew station), the players Ghost will say, “I’m detecting a strange energy signal coming from somewhere on Earth, it is similar to the light but twisted.” Then the guardian will grab his/her head and cringe in pain. The Ghost will ask if something is wrong, the guardian will say No, in a voice not completely his/her own, and start fiddling with the controls. The Ghost will ask what he/she is doing, and the guardian says in a voice not completely his/her own, “there is something I must do.” The cut scene will end, and load the guardian (player) in an unfamiliar location on Earth. A quest message will pop up titled, “Following in the footsteps of the lost….” Following in the footsteps of the lost… The guardian is in a small area, a valley, difficult terrain to navigate around. The ghost informs the guardian that the energy signal is coming from somewhere up a head. The path to the signal is difficult, requiring a lot of jump navigation similar to the Iron Temple, but not as high up. Along the path, the wind will blow, there will be the sound of a gunshot and the whispered words, “yours, not mine,” followed by another gun shot. Once the guardian (player) reaches the signal, he/she will see a skeleton laying on the ground. The guardian will be prompt to scan the corps, the ghost will inform the guardian that this body has been here for a while, but a part of the light still remains. The guardian will pick up a helmet from the ground next to the corpse while the ghost is talking and see the massive hole blown through it. Again, a gunshot will sound. The guardian will drop the helmet, grabbing his/her head and scream in pain. A voice from within his/her mind will say, “You have no light beyond the pathetic spark of your life!” The guardian will pull out Thorn and point it at his/her ghost. The ghost says, “What are doing?" curiously. The guardian still holding his/her head with one hand throws his/her aim off firing off all rounds until dry clicks are all that remains. The Guardian looks up at his/her ghost and says, “I know where I have to go.” End Mission Part two, “A glimmer of hope” The guardian arrives on Luna, //Patrol// the quest objective is to find any evidence of the “dead guardian” on Luna. //clue// East, Northeast, ridge of the Hell Mouth, the Ghost will detect a faint trace of light similar to that of the “dead guardian.” Once the guardian (player) nears the area of the trace, he/she will see a Hive Tomb Shard. Upon investigating, //scan//, the ghost will learn that within the tomb is the piece of the light of the “dead guardian.” The guardian (player) states that the light must be released, and begins to punch the tomb. After a few hits, the Ghost says, “this doesn’t appear to be very effective.” The guardian (player) pull out Thorn and shoots the tomb which cracks the tomb. The ghost says, “well that did something,” then turns to see that enemies are approaching and warns the guardian (player). The fight is very difficult //light level 380// as the guardian fights through the first wave of enemies the tomb begins to glow, and a voice cries out from it, “Run guardian, run, or you will follow the same path that I did.” The guardian (player) kills the Major Hive Knight, and begins to run for it. Once clear of the area, the tomb explodes destroying the area, the hive, and the light from within. The ghost says, “well at least his light is not trapped anymore.” The guardian (player) says, “True, but this is not over yet.” End mission Part three, “Remembering the lost” //Earth; Tower, Last City// The guardian (player) goes to see Eris Morn to see if she knows anything about a guardian being turned by the Hive. //scene// vanguard and Eris Morn argue over the guardian (player) pursuing this matter, that this guardian “dead guardian” should stay lost. The vanguard tell the guardian (player) to not pursue the matter, that some things should stay lost. The guardian leaves End mission Part four, “Lost but not forgotten” //Venus// The guardian (player) arrives at Venus, per Eris Morn’s secret instructions, against the orders of the vanguard and counsel of his/her ghost. Searching the library for any history on recovering light that has been corrupted, the ghost discovers that there was a device made that could purge the corruption of darkness, not strong enough to use against an enemy but maybe on something else. End mission Part Five “Cleansing ritual” Part 1 //Vestian Outpost// Speak with the Cryptarch about getting a device that can allow the guardian (player) to extract a part of his/her own light. He will give the guardian (player) part 2 of the mission Part 2 //Moon// The guardian (player) returns to the moon, to hunt down some needed components to build a device that can cleanse the corruption of Thorn. 250 helium flask, fragment of the tomb (that exploded in the earlier mission). Part 3 //Vestian Outpost// Return to the cryptarch, give him the 250 helium flask, fragment of the tomb, and 5,000 glimmer. He will then tell the guardian (player) to go to Mars (Clovis Bray) and find a device, if the Cabal have not destroyed it already, with in a lab, that will help to extract the guardians essence. Part 4 //Mars// The guardian reaches Mars, and makes his/her way through one of the towers to a lab/office (Stormcaller introduction area). There the ghost finds a computer terminal that tells where the item should be. The guardian (player) goes there, after fighting through a massive horde of Cabal and two additional waves of reinforcements. After killing the Cabal Major Calossus, the guardian retrieves an item that suggests that what he/she is looking for has been sent to Phobos. Part 5 //Phobos// Special Heroic version //light level 390//. The guardian (player) runs through the base until prompted to recover the item from one of the storage boxes. This mission is focused on the Cabal reclaiming the base that the Taken took... through taking. Lots of Major's with the boss being an Ultra. End mission “Returning to the light” //Earth// Over a secure communication, Eris Morn and the Cryptarch tell the guardian (player) that in order to complete the cleansing ritual, the guardian (player) must go to the corpse of the “dead guardian” to extract what is left of his light, along with the guardians (player) light and mix it with the fragment of the tomb and the 250 helium flask. While the guardians (player) ghost is working the ritual, a Hive ship appears and begins to attack the guardian (player). \\395 Light\\ This fight is made up of 4 waves, the first two are the same, 15 enemies, with one wizard and one knight. Wave 3 is made up of 3 Hive Knight Majors with swords and each with a different elemental shield. The fourth and final wave is a death singer, boss. Once the boss is dead, the guardian (player) is prompted to interact with his/her ghost, handing Thorn over and watches it get cleansed into Rose. The guardian receives the Exotic Primary Weapon, Hand Cannon, "Rose… by any other name." The guardian’s (player) ghost says as Thorn is changing, “I never did like that weapon.” Quest complete.

  • *Bungie mulling over the idea* "Well maybe we can work in the quest with an upda...." *Activision stepping in* "Yeah, you're going to make it an Ornament. And a minimum of $50 microtransactions for Radiant Treasures, or a 1 in 500 chance random drop, or have Xur offer it the week before we drop Destiny 2."

  • Or you can just use 6 instead of 5 motes of light when doing the thorn quest

    • Before it was the Thorn/Rose, it was a normal looking hand cannon.

      • Yup, bungie's fanbase has better lore and story ideas than the company itself. I think this is a great idea. I agree that the gun would need to be a PVE God to be viable for that much questing. After all, questing after 250 helium filaments is not fun, no matter what spin you put on it. By the way, everyone did 1000 kills in the plague lands for the record book, I would infer that that part of the quest is not a problem. It happens while you play. If the gun is a serious PVE God, meaning, if it was like a knock-off red death (as some are suggesting) with firefly, hereafter's blinding perk for precision kills, and a QuickDraw perk, it would become very useful. (But how would a blinding hand cannon work in crucible? Hmm...) The one problem I see happening with this quest's final encounter is the same problem that a lot of people had with the black spindle encounter: It is overwhelming for one person. Because of the way exotic missions have been designed in destiny, most missions such as this are not available to fire-teams. Would it be something you would do with friends like the exotic sword strike, or would it be like the last Gjallorhorn mission? Here's where my "if I was bungie" rant starts. If I was bungie, I'd make this mission available to fire teams. Why? 1. Things are more fun with friends. 2. More ads, majors, and ultras can be thrown at the players, causing more chaos, causing more thrills, causing more playtime, causing more fun! (Fun = Gjallorhorn) To back this up, I would remind everyone who loves lore as much as I do that this is a social game. You can have cutscenes and cool lore references and awesome stuff, and I'll love it just as much as Datto loves cooking. But why do we continue to play destiny two years after its initial (very poorly prepared) release? Because of community. Because of friends, because things are more fun with actual people than they are by yourself. Wanna do it by yourself? Ok. The player base is able to make their own decisions about their own lives. As for the development of the game, the option of social gaming still needs to be there, whether you utilize it or not.

But what would it look like? I imagine a gay version of the last word, with flowers imprinted on it.
don't come at me with the "only his perspective of the gun changed, it looked exactly the same" The gun changed with his personality, the gun resembles his personality, he was hesistant to acknowledge he had changed, when he did, he saw his gun for what it had become it was probably no gay reskin of the last word, tho

in that context you could say.. preskin of the last word
• FAN. GODDAMN. TASTIC. One slight problem... Nobody wants this guardian to go after the dead guardian. But then, even Eris just starts to help him? Why? Did I miss something? Or was it simply for the fact that he was already so deep that they just accepted the fact that he may as well go all the way down?

                    • It sounds cool, but it would probably work best as some kind of dlc rather than a quest. But still I think being able to finally cleanse the thorn would be amazing.
