I recently made a post "can you shotgun" and the comments regarding skill made me start to wonder.
Now I'm not talking about some suicide shotgun. I mean how many people go like 15-0 ,or flawless trials , 1.5 or better K/D that kind of thing .
I would love to hear what the community really thinks
Edit 1: a lot of votes for sniper rifles but no intelligent comments as to why . Just a lot of "because I said so that's why "

Edited by Captain K1utchx: 12/21/2015 3:31:35 AMThey each have their skill set. Although I'd put snipers ahead by a bit since it's possible for a sniper to be good at all ranges whereas a shotty is really only good inside its effective range. But that depends on player skill. "How much skill does it take to hard scope down a hallway?" Well none, but that's typically what bad snipers do, remain immobile, ads, unaware of the radar. Plus it tends to be bad players that go back to feed the sniper kills. Complaining about that is like complaining about a corner camping shotty user and how when you rush him, you end up dying a lot. "Aim assist though" Well I see aim assist the same way I see blink, shade step, or Titan skating. As tools. What I mean is typically any of the aforementioned things help shotgun players close the distance between you and the target as quickly and effectively as possible. Aim assist is there to effectively help acquire the target as quickly as possible in the same sense. Also it doesn't aim for you just FYI. P.s I don't care about aim assist nor do I feel reliant on it. I'm more than comfortable playing with little to none. The other problem with this question is that map design plays a large part in the performance of either weapon. Most of the maps are geared toward CQC so on any given map there maybe 1 or 2 good solid sniper lanes.

I've gone 15-0 with a shotgun. It requires some skill, but not as much as snipers.
-
I mean shotguns sometimes require reflexes, good spacial reasoning and predictive behavior, but those are things born of intelligence and experience. Compared to sniping not a lot of actual "thumbskill" goes into running a shotgun.

5 Repliesneither takes more skill than the other. in a sense both take more skill that the other but also take less skill that the other. if you canuse a shotgun to herd your opponants for your allies then that is skillful. however if you run around with a shotgun getting 1 kill but dying in the process because your reckless then that is not skillful if you can move from view point to view point to lock down the map with your sniper and pin the enemies into a corner for your allies to close in then that is skillful. however if you sit there and endlessly watch the same spot and do nothing else then that isnt all that skillful. asking which needs more skill to use is impossible to answer. both take more and kess skill to use respectively depending on both how they are used amd how you define skill. some define skill as wiping the enemy team and getting kills. others define it as getting more killes per life. others define it as playing more tactically towards the objective.

For all those scrubs complaining shotgun takes skills think again. I do both and know for a fact sniping takes more skills. Because some times it's not always a head shot. And if you have max agility and your at mid range you can out play a sniper easily. Shotgun takes less skills because you have so much more room to -blam!- up and get the kill melee+shotgun, double tap if it gets a hit marker, and full out shot guns. While for a sniper your shot has to be precise because if not you lose the advantage you had in your spot and your location become known for the whole enemy team. And they straight up flank and grande spam the shit out of you.

Shotty means blink boop dead, or about to kill them they hide then boop dead, sniper have to predict movement, have good reaction time, and have to have a not terrible sniper, shotguns kill at close range almost guaranteed, get more range for the better shotguns then say immobius, can shut down any super other than shadowshot
-
Snipers take zero skill.
-
I've gotten a phantom and unbroken using only a shotgun, if that wasn't skill i don't know what us.

1 ReplyTo go 15-0 with a shotgun takes more skill then with a sniper.

Edited by SneakyTuck1: 12/21/2015 2:37:46 AMSniper = put yer back in a corner and camp, wait for your shot to be there, if you miss you have time to pull out primary or get a second shot off Shotty = map knowledge, predict enemy movement, reaction speed, close quarter combat - if you miss or too slow you're dead. Shotty obviously takes more skill/knowledge of tactics. These 1k yrd stare camping scrubs just think they have skill, really the gun does it all.

Imo they each both take skill. Shotguns require quick thinking and good CQC technique. Shotguns are fun to use, being up in peoples faces is fun, especially, Universal remote+Another shotgun+Garrison+Striker=Badass kills and funny moments! Snipers cannot rely in body shots for kills, aiming for one point of the body (a guardian or enemies head) can be difficult, especially when you are getting shot, low on health, last guardian standing pressure is on. This goes the same for shotgunners. Snipers reward skilled shooters, its very nice and it feels awesome landing a head shot. I think the reason why people really hate snipers is because most of the PvP maps are medium or big maps with huge open areas. If there were more small maps, with closed off areas shotguns, sidearms, and fusion rifles would be supreme and some MLG sniper. Now I play both sniper and shotgun, sniper in trials and shotgun in regular crucible.

Sniping with fusion rifles.
oh wait.
Normal Crucible = Sniper ToO = Shotgun

I use to be a full time shotgun but recently changed to sniper to try it out and damn is it hard. With shotguns you could just aim in their general direction and get a kill. With a sniper you have a small reticle that has go over someone's head and if their moving its twice as hard.

10 RepliesYou had a lot of skill using Thorn, Felwinter's Lie , Radegast's Fury and Arcblade
-
I think both can take skill to execute well. But to me, consistently hitting head shots from multiple angles and vantage points takes more skill than running and gunning. Except for maybe The Chaperone. The slug shot does take skill to head shot while in close quarters and come out on top.

I'm a shotgunner off he bat who isn't the best at sniping Sniping takes numerous times more skill (if they aren't body shotting of course) then shotguning. You gotta predict where they are and move your sights ever so slightly to hit a small box for a kill. All while being shot at. Using a shotgun isn't entirely skillless. You have to watch for other shotguns, attachable grenades, shoulder charges and fast time to kill guns likes last word. To achieve a positive KD with shotguns isn't easy; neither with sniper. Snipers are harder for sure but that doesn't mean we can discount the effort to shotgun.
-
To snipe you have to predict enemy movements and manipulate sight lines, plus the precise minute movements to pop a dome. To shotgun, you have to get close to someone and pull the trigger. With skill it is extremely deadly, timing it right and sneaking up and avoiding fire. But there is always far higher risk, and a skilled shotgunner will always die more and have a lower kd than a skilled sniper, although probably getting more kills. This is why shotguns don't take as much skill. Crouch around a corner, wait. Time it right, get lucky, have enough range and impact and you get a free kill. TL;DR: Shotgun skills: timing Sniping skills: sight line manipulation, precise targeting, prediction of movement, timing
Well you wanted concrete reasons
-
I say snipers because a shotgun is more like bam one hit kill. There is, for the most part, no need to aim. You can't not aim with a sniper (at least for the normal human beings like us), and with a sniper, its just really unwieldy. Before you ask, yes, I use shottys all the time. Because they're easier.

5 RepliesWhoever says shotgun sucks at this game

1 ReplyShotguns - movement Sniper rifles - aim

Skill in combat is secondary to victory.
-
9 RepliesI'm just gonna leave this here
snipers can kill from any range. ANY. Shotguns require the user to be right on their victims ass and be forefront in the battle.
-
They both take a completely different set of skills, I've always been awful with shotguns but I can rush and snipe effectively.

Forgot the 3rd option. Fusions... take the most skill
