The elephant in the room: Selling us fixes to Vanilla Destiny as part of TTK.

So I wasn't expecting to be back on here and not in bed sleeping but my dogs wake me up in the middle of the night to go out and I checked in on the forums while waiting for them. What I found was a growing undercurrent to the whole TTK announcements, that I think is reaching the point where Bungie need to address it before the elephant knocks the tent down. This isn't something new. We've been discussing this in posts for the last couple of weeks, but there is a problem with how Bungie are selling The Taken King and to understand why they're wrong in what they're doing, there are a couple things to understand: 1) The Taken King DLC consists of the story and missions taking place in the fight vs Oryx. It includes... -a new playable space (his dreadnaught) -the "new" enemy "Taken" -new weapons and armor -new PvP maps -a new PvP game mode -new strikes -a new raid. 2) Coming alongside The Taken King are a raft of changes necessitated by the fact that year one was (to a great degree) a disaster and a giant beta test. Those changes to the vanilla experience include... -Having to rework the entire quest structure -reordering some missions and adding new vanilla level tutorial missions as well as adding in cut-scenes and some Grimoire integration to give the game an actual story -redoing the economy (again!), this is their 4th stab at endgame currency. Conveniently each reset makes an initial barrier to new expansion gear... -more vault space as well as collection kiosks to finally fix the horrendous storage we've dealt with since launch -trackable quests and bounties -actual equippable ghost shells -Reworked faction rep. We can once again turn in materials for rep like we could in vanilla and no longer are beholden to wearing their class items to get the rep. -weapon patch 2.0 that may or may not balance things -new menus (ui) -reworked leveling system because the current Light-Levels-to-endgame sucks -Completely replacing the entire Ghost dialogue in the game (I'm going to shake my head and laugh if Ghost talks in the TDB and HoW missions now) Now while taken as a whole all this is a sea of changes coming our way, it's kind of bs to lump this all together and that's exactly what they're doing. Everything in point #2 are things that realistically should have been in this game on 9/9/2014. That is why people are so pissed off and feel we've been paying to play a beta for the last year. When you are literally going back and redoing the entire vanilla experience, that signifies that that experience was broken and not ready for final release. And while it is a GREAT THING that after we've championed for those things for the last year that our efforts here are finally coming to fruition... these thing have NOTHING to do with The Taken King and 90% of what we've had previewed by Bungie (at E3, in the GI cover and now through the first video stream) are all fixes to the broken base game experience and again, have nothing to do with the $40 (and up, sorry overseas people) they're asking for The Taken King. Honestly weapon patch 2.0 should have been out in May and barring that, it should have dropped the day after they announced it. Why are we still playing with weapons they say are broken? Vault space should be doubled today. They're telling us to not dismantle gear pre-TTK... uh, what part of we don't have anyplace to store it are you not getting?? While I've thrown praise at Bungie for the direction that things seem to be headed and for actually listening and getting a raft of Guardian requested fixes into the game, they need to stop making this all seem like it's part of the Taken King. It's not. I know the next Stream will be on the dreadnaught, so we'll hopefully get info on the actual expansion the next two weeks.

  • At the very least the price should be lowered to 19.99. Fixes are not new content.

Another issue is that we have people literally saying that if Year 1 Destiny was a Beta, they were FINE with paying for said Beta then getting the complete game for $40 MORE! That is unacceptable. People are literally championing Bungie for making us pay to be their beta testers! I have never seen such willingness to throw money at the screen! People shit on CoD for selling essentially the same game over and over, they shit on EA for releasing many games gutted and resold later as DLC, but Bungie does the same thing... and it's OKAY?! I've never seen such hypocrisy. Such delusion. So many in this community are fine with PAYING FOR A BETA then getting the fixes and completed content later FOR $40! I cannot support this. I will not support this. I just can't believe many of the responses I am hearing. It's famboyism and hypocrisy, and it's down right insidious.

      • Are you just really thick or something? It's going to play out exactly the same way all the other DLCs did: everybody gets the exact same version of the game, and then if you want to play the new activities, you need to stump up for the DLC. You can delete and redownload DLC. Having to maintain two completely separate games, which players can hop between by deleting DLC items or unplugging memory sticks would be a quagmire of biblical proportions.

      • Stop complaining, this DLC will be perfect. -We're getting ONE whole new race of enemies! Woo-wee, I'd love to fight what will likely be re-skinned hive! -Bonues areas! Because making the existing ones perfect is a bloody dumb idea. Why would you pay for an upgrade, when you can pay for a new product? -New emotes! It's gonna be like Space Channel 5: You'll harness the power of a well-executed Macarena to hurt yourself! It really adds white-knuckle thrills and chills to combat: can you risk twerking for Crota? -New economy! Real life SUCKS: why should I earn 1 familiar currency for my entire lifetime? It's such a stupid idea: we should work hard for months to have our Benjamins out-dated and worthless: it's a great idea. And my favourite... New ghost shells! Now, when you go to open a door, you get 3 seconds of an expensive BLUE ghost! This DLC will be amazing, buy it! It's so cheap: Only 60$ for UK players! A lot of the updates are clearly not part of ttk. Vanilla players that don't buy ttk aren't going to be walking around with a 365 ghorn. Or receiving vanguard marks vs the new legendaries. I would be surprised if the dinklebot was still the dinklebot for those that decided to stay away from ttk. But what do you expect? Bungie's hyping year 2. The taken king sure, but year 2 more so. I don't get this post Lost. Are you angry that they're hyping year 2 changes as ttk changes? Or that bungie didn't do this sooner? I read your twitch reveal post. Every "my take" section was "this is a great change but they should have done this sooner". And despite agreeing with every change you final verdict was "some good changes and one huge disappointment". What was the disappointment? To me it seems like Destiny is slowly coming around. Unfortunately I don't know if you will be able to enjoy it. You may still be too angry that it wasn't what you wanted when it launched.

            • Stop trying to be a keyboard crusader and let people make their own decisions. You try so hard to try and convince everyone that your opinion is fact. You and others use the word BETA when you have little idea what that even means. Despite it's list of flaws, Destiny was a more complete and polished game than damn near every other AAA game that came out the same year. BUNGIE has made several mistakes with this game that has pissed me off but at least they are making an attempt to correct them. If Capcom or EA made Destiny, they wouldn't have fixed anything and instead would have just charged us for weapon balances all year long. And that's if they cared to even do that. They would have sold the three new subclasses to us at 5 dollars EACH.

                  • Bump. I didn't get the gist of this thread until I actually took the time to read it after work and basically made a duplicate of this thread lmao. :( But I posted in the Destiny section. I was asking what was going to be TTK exclusive and what was coming as standard with the 2.0 patch. I have a strong feeling they're going to completely ignore this topic because they're using what mostly seems to be standard patches to over hype the expansion itself. They did the same exact shit with HoW. No hype here. No preordering here. Still standing my ground because this is absolute bullshit. They're taking extreme advantage of those who are being ignorant and thinking everything they've showed is TTK exclusive. From what it sounds, the expansion by itself is small as fućk, like you already pointed out. They're REALLY going to charge almost the FULL price of a FULL game for an expansion that has very little actual CONTENT ? Fućk this developer. Fućk their publisher.

I'm still convinced they make they game they want, and throw in some addictive quirks, and abuse behavioral science, to try and get us to eat up what they want their game to be without any complaints or qualms from us. They've never once made a change that didn't somehow appease them primarily. Every change has to pass their approval before it can even be considered. Since when does consumer demand not mean the most? We're the ones who play your game and actually make it out to be what you claim it is, despite falling short on several fronts. Think about it, they won't balance guns because they want each type to have their own 'reign.' Luke 'Asshat' Smith said it himself in an interview, they want them to have their own era. Despite the obvious community feedback screaming for balance. So despite hundreds of players's feedback over the course of months, hoping to just keep everything fair so that players can use the weapon type they like and not the one gifted with unusually high damage-per-second/time-to-kill. Instead they just keep tweaking the meta to suit themselves whenever they finally realize they've made a huge mistake for long enough. Feels like we need to get some honest answers. If they wanted to make a game for themselves, they shouldn't try and throw in addictive quirks and exploit human brain function to try and sucker a couple hundred thousand people into buying the crap to fund it. I don't like the way this looks for Bungie, or even for the players at this point. Here's a link for anyone who doesn't know what I mean by the behavioral science nonsense: http://www.ign.com/articles/2015/04/02/bungie-used-behavioral-psychology-to-make-destiny-appealing There's quite a few different articles about it everywhere.

****fistbump I was disappointed. Things that were notable to me were things like Mark stating he values/ed his gear/equipment. Resounding sounds of "...it's boring for ten years" emanated. I did pose the question in the stream "what keeps Bungie from lessening the value of our gear NEXT YEAR?". I didn't really expect an answer. Bungies going to have to forgive me for being remiss and understanding the relevance of "...oh you know why? It's not 915 yet" as the answer to the riddle of why their attempt to dismantle legendary gear in the stream resulted in glimmer and NOT legendary marks. Let's put it all on the table. What "triggers"(triggers are actions in-game that cause a result) did we see for functionality wise? Other than walking, swapping gear, opening menus, a dismantled gear failure to obtain an unknown amount of legendary marks, and absolute DEAD SILENCE and lack of any caring from the audience when the "moneymotes" (what I call the new emotes that supposedly gravitate money at the tv screen) were shown at the end.... this stream only revealed exactly what Sols is basically stating. It's everything that should've been done year 1, and quite frankly at the expense of every players time and efforts being wasted short of the exotics we get to carry over..... For an entire year. Motes wasted on forging. Forged weapons are now going to be useless in new content. Raid weapons will be obselete from VOG and crota raids. Check this out Bungie. "RE-playability" is based on "FUN FACTOR". You will never read a review anywhere in the gaming industry's history where within a review a consumer or gamer states "The RE-playability of this game is HIGH, because everything you earned is worthless in upcoming DLC". You will find reviews stating "RE-playability HIGH. Anything you go BACK and earn can be used in the new DLC". Bungies concept of RE-playability is "well if we make everything they have invalid, THEN they will play". Notice the last word isn't "RE-play". Because everything from the last year was so mundane it was posted on the forums with the word "boring" in the title. One thing I doubt they will show us in the last two streams is the removal of storyline save points. Because if you remove those people will HAVE TO play through entire missions for bounty completion... meaning the community will have to play more for a bunch of repeat bounties from the beginning. Good post Sols. Your work is much appreciated.
