What are you thoughts on free to play (f2p) games?
We all know that micro-transactions in AAA titles is wrong as you have already payed for the game and then there is the DLC that you might have bought too. I think it's acceptable in f2p games for developers to use micro-transactions as they must make their revenue somehow.
What are your thoughts should there be more of these types of games and what is your favourite f2p game?

1 ReplyYes, as long as you can go far in the game in a reasonable amount of time without paying. I've never paid anything in a free to play and (hopefully) never will.
-
2 RepliesI would rather pay something than have to deal with micro transactions and ads. I do cope with some iOS apps having adds because I don't need a full version and the "lite" version does what I want. The days of shareware were more my style, try before you buy. The fact that the majority of free to play games are also pay to win, pisses me off. Unless you're willing to invest obscene amounts of time grinding for things that cost a few dollars. In mainstream games, I'm ok with aesthetic add ons costing a few dollars here and there as well as large expansions. But having additional features and gameplay modes available on day one for an addition fee, is heresy.

1 ReplyI would like it if there was a depends option here. Honestly, a lot are annoying cash grabs that I wont invest my money into. This specifically applies to the ones on the iOS market but there are a few PC games out there too. However; others like ZMR where the developer regularly puts out good content updates, show the intention of supporting their game, and don't make it so pay to win is the only winning strategy are worth putting some money into.

1 ReplyF2P games are a nice time killer. Arcade games, mobile games etc. I don't mind micro transactions in these games, as long as you don't need to buy them to progress further in the game. Micro transactions in AAA games is murder. Should be Condemned by law. Its killing gaming. DLC if fine as long as content wasn't cut from vanilla game and is worth my money.
-
2 RepliesThe micro transactions are stupid, but being able to play games for free, and not needing to pay at all, that is pretty cool. My favourite free game has to be Warframe...it is awesome!
-
1 ReplyWell thinking about all the free to play games I've played.. I'd rather put money down for a really good well designed game.. The micro transaction games I hope they put an end to that..(even though I know they are a huge money maker for them)
-
1 ReplyThe majority will agree with Free to Play simply because it's free. Personally I'd rather have a game I just have to pay once and be done with so I don't have to break out my credit card just to have fun.
-
Free to play with all items available to non paying players? Fantastic idea right there. Using micro transactions on games that are completely free otherwise is a dang good time in my opinion. Personally I don't buy micro transactions, but for those who do more power to them. This allows the company to survive and slowly update the world they created. Micro transactions on AAA titles is just proof that those developers are greedy. We already shell out the money for the game, the DLC (if you want to keep up with other players), and then they expect you to pay extra on top of that. I bought some gun skin packs on BO2 with some left over Microsoft points, and the whole premise is ridiculous. I regret it, even if it was a couple bucks worth of points.

I think "okay" is a good way to describe free to play games. Warframe is pretty good, but the game throws alot of microtransactions in your face initially.
-
1 ReplyDepends... there are two ways to use micro transactions: a good way and a bad way. The good way (in my opinion) is simply offering bonus content such as extra characters, weapons, cosmetics etc. as long as no unfair advantage is to be had by obtaining these weapons. Basically, I am opposed to the "pay to win" model. For the bad way, I have a nice little example up my sleeve: Clash of Clans. This game is specifically designed to milk money out of people. The game pretends to be fun for the first few levels, until you hit pay walls that beg you to simply cough up the $1.99 for 50 crystals so you can speed up that construction that would otherwise take five days. Except here's the best part: that was just a best case scenario. Clash of Clans' construction speed-ups cost generally 100-600 crystals at a time. $5=500 crystals. So basically, it's highway robbery if you simply want to speed up that five day construction time. It's an endless loop. It's too time consuming to achieve anything in that game without using real money. The only reason that I don't completely hate the game is because you are provided with some opportunities to earn crystals in game, those opportunities may be few, but they exist. Anyways, that's my take on free games with micro transactions. I understand that creators need revenue, but there are better ways of going about it than ruining the game.

There OK, it just depends.
-
Really depends. I think it's fine in League of Legends where nothing you pay real money for can actually impact your ability to perform. Most of their transactions just change how your characters look which is very benign in terms of game impact. On the other hand, there's quite a wealth of abominations in the f2p scene (often referred to as p2w- pay to win). Pay to win games are usually games that could almost be fun if you weren't always getting hammered by the 12 year old who stole daddy's credit card number... More often than not I'd rather play a game that has a one and done price tag if for no other reason than the fact that f2p in my experience breeds incredibly toxic communities because the majority of players are younger, not financially invested, and generally seem to care less in competitive games/modes. I play LoL a lot but I can't even deny how terrible the community is.

League did it right.

3 RepliesMicro-transactions need to stay in F2P titles. I am sick of AAA devs and publishers trying to pull this shit off. Truly shows that human greed knows no depth of depravity.
Planetside 2 and Warframe are two of my favourite F2P titles. My brother loves Hearthstone.
1 ReplyThe poll concludes the arguement but this thread right here is the prime example of the vocal minority. Little shit heads...

War Thunder is a great free to play game. I've had a ton of fun on it and I have yet to see a way to buy your way to wining
-
1 ReplyWe need more free games like DUST:514 and Warframe; where you can enjoy the entire game without paying a dime.
-
WARFRAME!
I've spent about 15-20 buying prestige pack 2 soon.
-
2 RepliesThe ones that don't make it a pay to win thing are generally good. The ones that either force you to grind for hours for something simple or pay money for it aren't ever good.
-
4 RepliesI've never spent money in them, but I still usually enjoy them. World of Tanks is my shit.
-
World of tanks is a great example........ although I'm still waiting on it to be on Xbox one
-
7 RepliesFree to play means pay to win...
-
Depends. Sometimes you pay for quality however it's surprising what devs come up with knowing that no one will pay for it. Lol

My "friend" has spent over 400 dollars worth of gems in clash of clans, while my other friend has spent 0 dollars and is 3 levels ahead of him. I believe if you are stupid enough to spend that much money on a free game you deserve to suffer.
-
I usually like them (planetside 2, TC phantom, Star Conflict) But 90% of the time if you really start to play it you'll eventually hit a block where it only becomes p2w
