Okay so what games have actually had a real life impact on you as a person? Games that left such a mark on you, you can tell a story about almost every single thing you've done in that game from the time you started. A game you got so involved with, you often times blurred the lines between your real life and virtual life. Something so fascinating and exciting, you remember the very first moments you stepped into the great adventure.
I have two.
First is Pokemon, more specifically Pokemon yellow. I will never forget that little yellow shit following me around. The feeling I had running through my body when I first started the game was something I rarely feel. SOO much excitement and bewilderment. Pokemon became my life for years. I had to have everything Pokemon. As the years dragged on, I became less interested in things not related to the game, but my passion for each new game remained. I am WAY more excited for ORAS to come out than any 24 year old should be.
Second is, some of you probably guessed it, World of Warcraft. I was there from the very beginning. The bonds I formed on that game were stronger than the bonds I had with 90% of my friends. And the great thing is, very best RL friends played with me. It almost seemed like we became even better "best" friends through playing WoW together. The three of us, leading raids and getting gladiator titles, formed a bond that has kept us together for years and years outside of WoW. In my opinion, no game on the current market even comes close to offering everything WoW does. It is the most complete and well-rounded game I have ever experienced, and because of that I had to force myself to quit the game 9 months ago. It was impossible for me to play the game in moderation. Each and every spare moment I had in life, went to WoW.
Unfortunately, I haven't been able to experience the same feeling of starting this awesome adventure with any game other than those two. I thought Destiny might have had a chance, but nothing came of it. Destiny is a wonderful game, but there are several very disappointing things about it. With that said, I am waiting to buy my first CoD game to see if I can potentially experience the same rush I have been looking for from a new game for years. I highly doubt I'll get the feeling from CoD, but I'll keep searching and waiting until I do.

I've got to say there are probably 5 video games (I'm counting a franchise as a video game) that really had a significant impact in my life. My dad and I used to play the old Wolfenstein 3D together a lot. As in, he'd play and I'd watch, or I'd read the strategy guide and help him find the secret rooms. It was quite a good bonding experience for us when I was a child. After that, the Command & Conquer series, specifically Red Alert (I played every game through C&C 3: Tiberium Wars). Some of my favorite memories of me and my cousin (who is no longer with us) was playing Red Alert. I played these games so much growing up. Halo 3 was the next one to have significant real-life impact. I played, and loved, Halo 1 and 2, but never got into multiplayer that much. Some of my best real-life friendships were forged around Halo 3, both on XBL and LAN Parties at my college dorm. As I graduated college and moved away, it became a great way for me to stay in touch with those same friends in other states. And yes, I cried the first time I beat Halo 3 and watched the final cutscene. The fourth one was Smash Brothers, starting with Melee and continuing with Brawl. In the same manner as Halo, Smash became a significant source of fun and bonding for me and a group of friends. Countless college nights were spent drinking and having Smash parties, and as recently as last Thanksgiving I was back in my home state and met up with a group of these same people and had a Smash party, and it was wonderful. Finally, I will admit that Destiny is the current video game franchise that is dominating my life, despite its flaws. It's fun as hell, and I have yet to even complete a raid (FYI I've got a 28 Hunter, 27 Titan, and 27 Wlock - I would love to raid with some peeps!). My best friend is in the Air Force and recently got back from Afghanistan and had his first son, and Destiny is one of the ways we keep in touch (It's much more socially acceptable for a guy to talk to his best friend over the headset while shooting aliens than it is just on the phone).

1 ReplyEdited by TooRaww: 11/14/2014 7:44:53 AMPokemon gold (first one I got), FF 8 and 10, Kingdom Hearts, and MGS 2. Lots of memories. To an extent, games played when you are young have an impact on how you view everything/one around you. You can tell who values what from what games they've played because those experiences in game have formed perspective. Ahhh nostalgia.

The first game that really changed me was Halo. It was incredible stepping out from that crashed escape pod for the first time. Running and trying to hide from the Banshees, driving the Warthog for the first time and getting the Marines to cheer after a good jump, trying to save everyone from dying, all of it was fun. And that was just the first level! From that day forward I bought and played every Halo game religiously. Talking with my friends about it, reading the books, learning as much lore and universe as possible, it was an absolute thrill ride. Halo without a doubt was the game that got me into gaming. And the second game that changed me was Dead or Alive Xtreme Beach Volleyball. We...won't go into that one.
