This could well be happening, and some idiots are already supporting it.

Final Edit: Originally this post was supposed to focus on how the community was preemptively defending the addition of microtransactions, but at almost 1,000 replies later, it's kind of mutated into something else. Also, I probably won't be responding to anything in this thread anymore. It's outlived its purpose, so just let it die. Recent data mining has revealed some new items in the form of consumables that buff things like XP gain and drop rates. It is still speculation at this point, but the timing of these items along with a few other clues points to most of (if not all) these items being available for purchase at the Eververse trading company. Let me say it again; this is currently mere speculation, but fairly well informed speculation nonetheless. AND PEOPLE ARE ALREADY DEFENDING IT They are saying the benefits are small, don't really matter or give anyone any sort of an edge (already bullshit.) But seriously, though. In response to an argument I've already seen far too many times: Pay-to-win does not actually mean pay to win. It means paying real money to get an advantage over those who chose not to. We payed $140 dollars for this game with the expectation of being put on a level playing field, fairly competing for in-game goods with the expectation that effort must be put in to get what we want out. In a game in which, from launch, it was made clear that while the game was free, players could (and would be encouraged to) exchange real money for in game goods, this system works and is perfectly acceptable. But this distinction must be made clearly and immediately. For Bungievision to now be blurring the lines between the two, while enjoying the benefits of both, is unacceptable. By the way, notice how things have been going around here for the last few days? First, it was "I'm okay with emotes, but shaders should stay as things we earn." Next, "I'm okay with cosmetic items, but nothing that will help in gameplay." And now, it's "I'm okay with small beneficial items, but nothing too big." So then, what's next? Sooner or later, this is happening. Take a stand. And now, a message for Bungie: Very soon, Destiny will be facing quite a bit of new competition from games like Fallout 4, Black Ops 3, etc. This is no time to be testing the loyalty of your community. There has already been a large outcry against this, and many players have already threatened to leave. Please, Bungie. Don't do this to yourselves, to destiny. (I'm still not entirely convinced this isn't all just a plot by Activision to get people to jump ship to BO:3.) And if any of this does come true, my fellow guardians, have fun on Bungievision's wild ride to an empty game.
Sorry if this all seemed a bit incohesive. I just wanted to get this all out there.
EDIT: I think quite a few points being brought up can be explained by reading the following comment chain in this thread: https://www.bungie.net/en/Forum/Post/162643536/0/0/1 View replies, read original comment first, then my rebuttal, and so on. EDIT 2: The drop-rate buff items have been denied on Twitter, but all points made here are still valid both on principal alone, and if/when this is considered in the future. But this is good. We made noise, and forced Bungie's hand to address the issue. Maybe this community does still have influence after all?

  • I hate Micro Transactions. The purely cosmetic stuff isn't too bad. However, if it goes any further I think many, myself included, are done with this game. It's a great game and I love it I'm just not going to buy a gun with real cash. There are other games that implemented micro transactions without going down that road. Only time will tell.

  • What kinda gets me is they nerfed the stupid idea 3oC when it was easily exploited by anyone with a boss save because they didn't like the rate people were getting stuff. They are ok with it if you are paying real world cash for it though??? WTF?!!??!

    • Let people play how they want to play. If they want to pay 100 bucks to get a bunch of advantages in a video game and have no fun grinding and finally feeling rewarded when they get it then fine. It won't change my gaming experience one bit.

      • If they want us to pay for anything, it should be items and equipment that is either really hard to find, or new items that are exclusive to each console. For instance, how about a new auto rifle Bungie hasn't revelead to the public, or a full set of gear for the Titan, Hunter, or Warlock? That kind of stuff. Oh, and for Xbox Users (granted this sucks =/) maybe have them pay to access the new exclusive PS4 stuff.

We are at a very delicate time in gaming history. Before this next Gen era, games were simple. Buy game, play game, win. Than either keep to play again or resell to buy that next big title. Now, we are seeing a high prevalence of huge online pvp and games that cost mutlimillions of dollars to create. The problem comes down to maintenance and longevity. An old game, say like fallout 3, it cost X to make. That cost is than recovered and exceeded (hopefully) by the amount of players who buy the game. So we as the consumer covered the production of said game, plus all the wages of the creators and advertising. It was over than. After a set time period, companies stopped updating and advertising the game, and anyone who bought it down road was like a little bonus. But now on top of those same costs, we now have to cover maintenance for the online servers, constant updates and the wages of a dedicated team who monitors and tries to keep the game relevant. So what people are saying is their $60 (or $100 or $140), that used to cover a game with a known lifespan, should be enough to also cover a game that has no foreseeable expiration date. Yes, more people bought and play destiny than the majority of last gen games but how much more did destiny cost to make? The fact is who ever is at the top is trying to prevent the financial downfall of destiny. What's going to kill it faster? Microtransactions or the day that Bungie and Activision decide that the servers are too costly to keep up? These microtransaction are dumb and they leave a bad taste in people's mouths but they are now becoming a necessary evil. Just like a Phone bill or cable bill. Your paying that monthly fee to make sure they keep your service running and effective. Now would destiny be better off as a monthly subscription over these microtransaction? Maybe, but no one knows. The top dogs at bungie and Activision probably did a risk analysis of both. With a monthly subscription they were guaranteed to lose players, but telling how many is impossible. But now they can allow everyone to continue playing and still make some upkeep revenue from a those who don't mind throwing out a few bucks here and there for a cosmetic item or even a boost. To them this path was the one that would keep the most players and still provide income to keep the game running. It was the safest. So while I don't like the idea of microtransactions, I understand the need for them from a business stand point, and don't want to bust Deej's or Cozmo's balls for something that is most likely above tinier Pay grade. TL:DR Money isn't infinite, but destiny is trying to be. Also you can't "win"destiny just saying.

I'm a gambling addict and honestly have nothing better than to throw money at my various screens. Bills get paid, food in the fridge....I'm gunna use the rest on whatever I please.

          • Does it actually matter that someone can max a subclass? That's easy as it is. Luke smith already nullified the loot pay to win. That's end game shit. Subclass and XP are nothing and if you're already endgame. Welcome the noobs. They'll be awful, and it'll raise your KD from killing them. What is everyone's problem?

            • I am against pay to win for sure. But I play ESO, and everything they sell is NOT game breaking. If Activision/Bungie stops it right there! If they are able to follow the Blueprint that ESO and others put right in front of them, that works, and control themselves it will be ok. The items ESO sells are in no way shape or form needed, are they nice, sure, but not needed by any means. Activision/Bungie just need some self control in what they sell, and all will be just fine.
