Getting my cat declawed, why all the hate?

So, about a month ago I got a cat who is now several months old. It so happened I was at the Petco that one of their associates started hating on me because I mentioned my cat was getting declawed. They kept saying that its cruel, it hurts long term, it changes their behavior, and so on. They really tried their best to make me feel like a scumbag. Growing up, it was always the case that my parents had our cats declawed. They destroy furniture and can be difficult to train otherwise, not too mention their playful behavior can hurt people, children and other pets. Believe me, I tried for weeks to train him to only use scratch posts/boxes, but that doesn't work. Cat nip doesnt lure him to do it either. Worse, I have to severely restrict his play behavior because he can damage things. Am I a bad person for getting him declawed? I'm not unsympathetic to him. I know it hurts initially. I made sure to go to a vet that would do everything possible to make it the least painful as possible. I just feel like these animal people use scare tactics that are hyperbole. EDIT: My apartment requires the cat to be declawed as well. If I didn't rescue him from the shelter he would still be there or even euthanized. EDIT 2: He's strictly an indoor cat. Any cat my family has ever had has only had it done to the front claws.

  • If it's indoor it's fine. Especially if you have leather furniture

It's horrible for them... Can cause serious long term pain and bleeding. I have 2 Siamese who aren't declawed and behave perfectly. Train them to use a scratching post, they work like a charm. My cats are 2 males from the same litter btw Edit: Indoor cats

It's honestly not that hard to train any animal, people are just lazy. There are plenty of ways to make sure your furniture is fine. I've had cats all my life & none of them have damaged my furniture at all. The reason you're getting hate is because unlike dogs, cats only line of defense is their claws. Not only that but the procedure is horrible, I'd never do that to a cat. They can bite, but it will not hurt to bad, if your cat manages to get outside, he will die. You are choosing to leave him defenseless & ultimately that choice is yours, but you better take care of your pet.

  • It is bad. You're taking out the bone when you declaw a cat. It would be like taking the first knuckles out on your toes. You wouldn't be able to balance yourself or walk comfortably ever again. I feel like you didn't educate yourself before making this decision. Your parents were wrong to declaw there cats and you are wrong to declaw yours. It's mutilation and why would you want an animal your going to do surgery on because you don't like what the animal does. I guarantee your cat won't be able to use kitty litter anymore. Kitty litter hurts a cat after declawment.

  • My sisters a vet and always tries to persuade her clients not to declaw their cats. It's an awful procedure, and dangerous.

If you aren't mature enough to properly train and take care of an animal that you have to mutilate it just to deal with it, you really really shouldn't own that animal. If you aren't willing to take on the responsibility of animal ownership, just don't.

    • Declawing a cat is a horrible thing to do just think how bad it would hurt to remove your nails then add the blood loss of veins going through the claws just trim the claws with a nail trimmer

          • My cat has her claws and never scratches anything but a little wooden post in the basement. I never had to train her, she just does it.

          • In England it is illegal to get them declawed because of how cruel it is. They will never be able to walk properly again just because you were too lazy to train them.

            • The only reason I dorm get mine declawed is because the first car we ever had declawed died because of faulty anesthesia.

                  • so far i had two cats in my life one was an out door cat with declawed front paws and one an indoor cat with nothing declawed if it was an outdoor cat i would say keep the claws since it would need a way to defend its self but since it isnt i say its your own choice the cat we have now is the indoor one and it was my job to litter train it and train it to use a scratching post to litter train her i made her go through the motion of digging in it so i did the same thing with the scratching post and my cat is picky and only likes certain kinds of scratching posts we had a small one with carpet on it (it could fall over easily and stuff) and we had one that was bigger and more sturdy so it wouldn't fall over, it was also wrapped in rope my cat liked the rope one alot more if you havnt got your cat declawed yet i suggest you try some different kinds of scratching posts because using them can be a good stress relief for the cat
also make sure you make them do the scratching motion on it XD sounds weird but it lets them know they can scratch it
How exactly is your cat supposed to destroy your furniture now.

                  • Yeah you are a bad person. Its what cats do, if you can't cope with that either don't have a cat, or don't have an indoor cat. Its stupid to mutilate him/her just because you want to protect some furniture...
