What do parents (specifically mothers) Have against anime?
I'm 16 and watch anime on a normal basis, (once or twice a week) and my mother doesn't approve.
She believes it has too much sexual content and language, but the thing is, she let's me watch movies like The Grey and play games like GTA... I just want a parents PoV on what the problem is?
Do you just believe it to be weird because it's from a different culture? Or do you watch CNN bash it every chance they have?
Disclaimer: I in no way consider myself an otaku. They word itself irks me, but like I stated above, I do enjoy watching it and just want to know what's up with parents?
Edit 1: Probably should've prepared for the assholes on these forums :-/ Thanks to the one guy the gave the different cultures different beliefs answer. It was to the point and made you look 100 times better than the other 9 year Olds that answered.

I had the same issue at that age but now that I'm at uni I have a lot more freedom/have my own computer. Just grit your teeth and you'll get through to the light at the other side

1 ReplyOkay, first things first: What the -blam!- kind of anime have you been watching in front of your parents? There's some shit that you just don't watch with other people in the room. A good quarter of the anime I watch is one 'mysterious beam of light' and a giant octopus away from being full on hentai. I only watch these when I'm by myself in my room, and I damn sure wouldn't go telling people I watched them, (except in the case of a close friend asking me 'hey do you know what [insert generic harem anime here] is? I'm looking for something to watch, is it any good?' to which I reply 'its alright if you can get past the plot', and move on with my life). My parents have seen me and my brother watch anime and such, and even watch the occasional episode with us when we are watching it on the tv. The only comments I ever get are the occasional "you like this kind of stuff" and questions like "who's that guy, and why is he doing that?" and other plot related questions. But the only things my parents have seen me watching are things like gundam, dbz, and AoT. Next point: If you would even think about using the term otaku to describe yourself if you aren't japanese, then you're a goddamn weeaboo, in which case you seriously need to go the -blam!- outside and lay off the anime.

A lot on here seem to be parents saying they wouldn't let their kids watch it and that, for the most part, is understandable. But when a person is 15-16+ and is old enough to make their own decisions, just give them a damn chance to be their own person. I watch anime and I am 24. I have watched it religiously since I was 13 and still go strong with it to this day. To those of you who say it is nothing but "animated porn" or for kids obviously have not taken the time to actually watch the different variety of anime out there and realize there is as much variety in anime as there is in television and movies today. I don't watch anime for the "porn" or anything. I watch a lot of anime that is actually themed around mature topics, like family issues, deaths, etc. Sure, there is the occasional SAO-like anime in there but there are different genres in anime for a reason. If people actually took the time to watch anime and not judge it based on narrow-mindedness and also are mature to take the time to understand WHY someone might like it instead of just writing them off as a "kid" or "pervert", maybe this community wouldn't have as many pricks as it does seem too. Someone watch CLANNAD and tell me that is for "kids" or "perverts" and then come talk to me. Otherwise you're freaking ignorant.

It looks childish or some cartoon porn. If you actually watch certain anime it can be child friendly or extremely graphic like Gun Grave for an example, then there is hentai, rule 34, and/or fan fiction because it's the Internet. Personally certain anime hits the feelings harder than a dog dying in a live action movie. Angel Beats ending is probably the number one saddest ending that I've seen.

2 RepliesI've been watching anime myself for years now. Since I was 8. I'm 23 myself now. I caught on real quick the my parents, though didn't disapprove of it, cared less for it than what you find on Nickalodian or Disney in the late 90s to early 00s... So I made it a habit to watch it when the weren't looking are when they were out. Even now, my mother rolls her eyes at me when she calls me and she can hear whatever is playing. I know myself that it isn't taboo, but I was observant enough to be considerate enough of those around me. I only watch High School of the Dead for the plot.
