I'm not totally sure you can get raid gear from the chest, but you can get class items and exotics, as well as radiant energy/shards. You could wipe 5 times or you could wipe 20 times, it's random but it will eventually spawn. You can do this as a team as well, no need to be solo. Check for the orange light on the door, if it's not there die to thralls or stand in the water and shoot your left foot.
