New Luke Smith comments on Raids below this OP
I went back and watched the IGN Raid/Nightfall video a number of times and then sat back and thought for a while. Then I watched it again. I really did miss what Luke Smith was outlining for Raids. I am guilty of not seeing the trees through the forest. Not sure if it is because most of the last 15 plus years I have mainly been an FPS player, the fact that Bungie made Halo - a game I have loved and played since the beginning - or because of distractions while watching the video. It doesn't really matter.
Point is my stance on MM, or LFG, for Raids was wrong. Here is why I came to understand that.
Destiny is truly different from what I and many others are used to. It is a grouping of a few different experiences drawn from FPS, open world exploration, campaign, MMO - Bungie calls in a shared world shooter for a good reason.
Here is an analogy I hope you all can follow and appreciate, so read it through.
Compare Destiny to a camp ground at the base of a tall mountain. I know, but stick with me. You can take your family and friends camping in the campground at the base of the mountain. There are campsites, running water, showers, a lake for swimming and fishing, natural trails, etc. This is the base lower levels of Destiny. You need only basic camping knowledge and low level survival skills. This is campaign, exploration and entry level Crucible. As your camping skills progress and your friends and family gain more experience you camp in more rugged terrain, tackle more arduous trails, begin climbing higher and more difficult areas. This is higher level of mission play and the Crucible. Still with your regular friends and capable family members.
Then, you reach a point were your desire to push higher up the mountain requires more preparation, better equipment and better training and skills. You make a series of attempts and find you are able to tackle this higher level of the mountain on a regular basis and take an experienced friend or two to count on for support and any trouble you get into. Nightfall/High Level Crucible/Highest level campaign
Then one day you look up to the peak of the mountain. You look at yourself. You feel you are experienced enough to make an assault to the peak, but know you can't do it alone. You need real experienced climbers to help you, the best gear and have to able to tap deep down into your inner survival instincts to reach the highest level. This is the Raid.
This is a simplistic analogy, but I hope that it helps other to understand what I finally did. No experienced and prepared and well equipped climber wants to group up with some people he found in town that say they are willing to try it. Match Making.
You want a group you can count on. Fellow climbers that know what this climb will take, have prepared for it physically, have the right equipment, etc. This is your character development and weapons knowledge and build. You want climbers that will not leave when the going gets tough, randoms, but will struggle through all the way to the top. It may take a few assault attempts to reach the top, but your team will make it if you stick together and support each other. After that, the next mountain will be different, offer different challenges, but you have a team that you can count on.
I get it now.
Thanks for reading.

"I understand everyone's frustration about the decision to not have matchmaking in a post-matchmaking world. I also understand the limitations that this places on the activity's adoption at scale.
That barrier to entry - the requirement that you get a group of people together and venture into something that is going to challenge your ability to work together (first) and your thumbs (second) - is a barrier I was willing to erect to preserve the activity goals.
Bleeding edge hardcore groups will invest some significant amount of time in figuring out the encounters and making their way through the Vault.
I fully expect groups to beat Normal mode in the first week its available.
This is intentional, I'd like any group that is motivated and willing to cooperate to make their way through the Raid on Normal. I've talked some about thumbskill challenge vs. investment challenge vs. cooperation challenge in some interviews, and the Normal Raid difficulty prioritizes cooperation challenge and investment challenge.
I expect Hard mode to take longer.
Once your group learns the encounters, you will be able to get through the Raid significantly faster than 3 hours.
However, the first time through, learning everything and arranging your group will take some hard-to-predict amount of time until some clan releases their strategies on YouTube.
The Vault of Glass is in many ways an activity that will build groups from the disparate people who come together to try and make their way through it. It's very much a team-building exercise.
If you're going to stream it this Fall, please feel free to let me know here. I'd love to tune in."

i feel like everyone will be dressed the same for raids /: really takes away from the whole unique guardian thing. its why i hate gear based games, dark souls for example. at high soul memory every one is wearing that dumb jester outfit. so yeah i'll take on a raid even if my gear isnt the best.

1 ReplyAmazing topic, I hope some people really opened their eyes here. Kudos to you OP

7 RepliesEdited by RedDragon2570: 8/1/2014 11:12:15 AMI say make everyone happy (I say this knowing people will find something else to complain about, so never truly happy). Include matchmaking, but have an on screen option to allow you to toggle it on and off like the difficulty option. That way if people want to use it they can and they'll be getting like minded players who want it, or if you don't want it, just turn it off. Seems like an easy solution to me. But I also don't develope games, so I have zero knowledge of how much work this would take.
-
1 ReplySo you want to leave your family and friends behind in the analogy. Also, the majority of the issues with the lack of matchmaking is the lack of communication. So if we were to include that into your analogy, it would be like having to find those experienced climbers while blind and unable to speak.

1 ReplyI liked your analogy & found it put things in perspective quite well. When I used to lay everquest 2 I knew of no one who went into a raid as a group of single players. It was always a guild or a team of guilds who went in. Sometimes we had a tag along. A friend of a guild mate who needed to do the raid. They were almost always the weak point but the responsibility of the guild member who brought them. I myself will be in a very small clan of mostly weekend players (because I & my friends are working people.) We probably will never have enough players to do a raid but I hope to ally our clan with some other PS3 clans for support when needed. This is a time honoured option. If we still need more players I may even post on forums for an open cattle call for a specific time & date. Hopefully I can find player we like to play with that way as well & maybe the clan will even invite them in. Random matchmaking is ok. It works. No one can disute that it does. However quality of game play may suffer due to the random skill level & maturity of the player. It's a grab bag, So once again, good job on a great analogy. VtxR- PS3

2 RepliesI guess I´ll be at the bottom, then...I have no skill, patience ot even the will to get in a PVP dog fight anymore, so I'll remain at the maps where I can explore, kill bad guys...Defend the Wall in Cosmodrome or any other map we can wonder/kill/get missions...
-
2 RepliesI it really seems like the majority of the FPS playerbase for Destiny really don't have much MMO experience. Not having matchmaking for the most difficult of content is most definitely the way to go. However, those of a more casual/limited play schedule should still have the option of matchmaking to at least be able to access and see the content. At best, they could take a play from WoW and implement a "LFR" version.

1 ReplyI REALLY appreciate it when people come around to the idea of NOT having a MM system for raiding. Especially if they were someone who was originally for a raid MM system. Your analogy is perfect, btw. Thanks for joining us in the sun, see you starside!

Perfect analogy.

1 ReplyI loved the analogy that was beautiful

20 RepliesEdited by Aray0002: 8/1/2014 2:04:22 AMThis game needs match making if not for the one and most obvious reason. Quick Group and Execute. With a MM option for random people or as you guys like to say casual gamer's who does this hurt among you? Without match making you will select your team via. friend list or clan. So you would never even use the Match Making option in the 1st place so.. why and I ask this in the most sincere way possible. Why does MM bother you and your core group so much if you will never ever use it ? Let the causal gamer experience RAIDS as they see fit and maybe they will learn from it. The way you want to play ... you will never let a casual gamer in with your group and even though that has merit for your agenda is that not a clear sign of segregation? There is no other option for those not as skilled or have the time invested into the game to have the best gear. MM should be available and a choice by you ELITES whether you use it or not.
-
1 ReplyI just hope the "base" of Destiny's "mountain" is as expansive and fulfilling as the "climb", or this is going to start seeming really elitist really quickly.
-
3 RepliesI think the one big thing that players are mistaking Destiny for is that it's an MMO. It's not. It's a shared world shooter. Just that alone should stop people saying "but in WOW we did XYZ...". The analogy of the climber is just perfect. Also doing prep work ahead of time will save hours trying to do it online. If everyone knows their tasks ahead of time then we don't waste time trying to tell little Johnny to do this, that and the other. And how many matchmaking teams would find a 6 year old on their team and then everyone screams "KICK HIM" which would be bad for the kid and also bad for the rest of the team. I think COD is responsible for all the players who DON'T use comms these days. Trash talking and racist, sectarian crap is what is killing comms in console games. I used to talk to my teammates all the time but the number of American hating on Brits (and vice versa) really did my head in. No wonder we are always having wars if allies are trashing each other. I just want to game with a team that have a common goal... and sadly, that's not something you can achieve with matchmaking due to way too many casuals doing away with comms altogether (even if we could talk to each other anyway... which we can't).

10 Replieswill expansion pass be available on ps3 in europe?
-
9 RepliesThe option should be there. I really cant think of a reason why you people that are against it care so much. Your analogy is all fine and dandy. Congrats on that. Dont ever use the match maker. What do you guys care? Other people will use it and either it will work out for them, or it will be shitty for them. If you always plan on climbing mount vesuvius with just your family members, then all the power to you. But it would make no difference to you, your family or your experience climbing the mountain if other people decided to climb it with random drunk people they met at the bar at the base of the mountain. So why do you care?
-
4 Repliesi love analogies, let me get this clear first. you sir did a superb job creating this campsite analogy and i love it. it explains basically everything and clarifies a lot of points that many people are still arguing over. however i will attempt to assault that peak with my group of friends :P no matter if they are inexperienced or not
-
I love mountains :)
-
1 Replyim going to go along with this climbing mountain stuff. There are people out there that will guide u up a mountain help u gain experience along the way, they don't know truly how good you are and you don't know everything about them, or maybe you don't have friends to go climbing with. Now you and your fellow climbers along the way bond and can start learning to work as a team. The point is don't enter a raid without a Sherpa.

A lot of angst out there re pro's & con's of Raids.. so here are some potential ideas for joining & completing Team Raids in a TBC Shared World Shooter game. 1) Mid-game save and pause Idea is to have gates throughout the game that allow the Raid Team to save / pause – for scenarios where Player(s) have to leave, OR, a server drops a player(s) thru no fault of there own. 2) Allow Players to join during the Raid (from Friends list) i.e. if less than 6 Players, then allow new Players to join in during the game. 3) Random Players allowed into Teams prior to embarking on Raids Could be based on Players profile & requirements set by the Team e.g. Level 22 + Players with Hunter Class? Perhaps include other Player selection requirements/criteria, such as Player has to be Level 22+ Hunter or Warlock, and Player has selected and agreed to criteria i.e. “Player is willing to support the Team thru 2hrs of Raid gameplay” Note requires moderation etc if Player does not live up to reputation. 4) Cross Platform - extend ability for both Xbox & PS Players to compete in the same Raid Hope this assists with building better Gameplay functionality into Destiny! What would you do.. IDEAS 4 Bungie? Expecting that Bungie has thought thru multiple scenarios & alternatives.. otherwise it's going to require future investment in game development. Disclaimer: until today, new SweetFA about MMO/Raids/Matchmaking etc - saying that I could be missing the mark by a mile! Anyway, kinda seems like Bungie could adopt some of the above functionality to satisfy your cravings for a better Destiny experience. Cheers. p.s. & lastly, Bungie should promote this Forum's qu's in a promo video that talks to the way forward. Would then make a vid for viral Marketing & jump into mainstream media to promote the Player base and gain traction pre-launch. 1 ReplyIt takes a lot of courage to do research and admit your opinion perhaps wasn't the best. +1 for manning up and bringing reason and intelligence to the community.

1 ReplyI completely understand that raids in Destiny are meant for high level, prepared, fireteams. I understand communication and teamwork will be necessary for success. However, I only have one friend who plays Destiny (or any game for that matter); my best friend of nearly 20 years. We always play 2-player co-op if a game has it. We will certainly attempt the raids as a two-man fireteam. I do not expect us to be successful, at least until we are way OP for the difficulty level of the raid. That being said, match-making should still be an option; just like in strikes. There is no harm in bringing a few randoms with us if we don't have a 6-man fireteam. So what if they can't communicate with us. So what if they don't coordinate tactics with us. They won't make it more difficult. Worst case they stand in a corner dancing, or leave. Best case they are observant and coordinate as best they can (flank right if we flank left, etc.). More than likely they will do their own thing, kill a few baddies, and provide additional targets for the baddies to shoot so they aren't all shooting at my friend and I. Not exactly helping, but certainly not hindering my friend and I either. Give us the option. If you don't want to match-make, don't. Play as a well oiled private party fireteam. Congratulations on having a robust circle of friends or at least being sociable enough to know a lot of people. But Bungie should not disqualify and bar entry to raids for those of us who do not have a robust circle of friends or are sociable enough to know a lot of people. Options are optional and don't hurt anyone. Not providing options alienates your player-base and fragments the community.

1 ReplyI just want you to know that I really find your post here enlightening. I honestly can say that if I ever get the chance to play with you, the honor would be all mine, man. Hopefully we might be able to run a raid or two in the future. I look forward to giving Bungie one helluva time watching stout Guardians run rampant all over their devilish playground. If it could be simplified into an analogy, think pitch black nights where we would play with flashlights in the dark. Hide N Seek, Light Tag, Freeze Tag, Shadow Puppets, etc. Simple, yes. But you can't say the finer things in life and the ingenuity behind it didn't spark from something as simple as children playing with their imagination.. God forbid, right? Even a different language was created like this...Morse Code, anyone? I truly believe this will be Bungie's greatest masterpiece yet and they are definitely not stopping there. I bet we can't even fathom what would forego Destiny. It's just unimaginable to me.. But in the meantime, I'm willing to throw all other games out the window for this one. I want to go further than 0 to 100% complete. I don't want the regular, beat the campaign-you've seen it all deal. And I think Bungie can and will deliver. I extend an invitation to you. It awaits within your inbox. Thanks for reading. Regards, X
