Every time there's an apacolypse and people survive, they always try to kill each other instead of banding together. Why? It's like people are more dangerous than the event.

1 ReplyBecause humans are not excessively social creatures by nature. It's only society that forces us to band together closer than we otherwise would naturally. Without a form of coherent society and enforcement, throw in the eradication of all life goals/expectations and the exclusivity of natural resources, and you've got your very own worldwide deathmatch with essential supplies as the prizes. People would (hypothetically) be ready to kill others to further their own survival. It's nothing out of the natural ordinary, just that we wouldn't have a "civilization" to further or rely upon. Everyone becomes scared and paranoid so most encounters would tend to start with "kill or be killed" because the assumption is that if you have anything, other people want it and you're the only thing standing in the way. Personally, in that kind of scenario, I'd stay well away from any likely encounters or probable violent areas and try to sustain myself and anyone willing to help.

Because we are a million times more likely to betray each other in the event of an apocalypse. Care about your group, and no others. They are all out to make sure that your group perishes so they can survive an extra couple of weeks.
-
Because -blam!- everyone else, that's why.
-
It's probably because of the prisoners dilemma. Killing other survivors and stealing their stuff is more beneficial for them than cooperating.
-
When shit hits the fan, you look out for yourself and the people you're close to. In any situation where civilization or even the world itself is falling to pieces, there's no incentive to trust anyone you don't know personally, and even more of an incentive to be hostile towards them since there's no consequence and they would likely have valuable resources to steal if you took them out. Sure, working together to survive would probably be more efficient and make more sense, but your chances are limited, and are you willing to take one in assuming that everyone else will work with you when they can essentially do whatever they want without being penalized for it?
-
Distrust, greed, more compassion for family than community, limited resources, etc. If everyone worked together, things would get better-- but it's hard to get them to do that post-apocalypse. So, instead, it's a race to the bottom, where people are trying to find better ways to cheat others out of their resources and even lives.

Tensions are high and people like to talk.
-
Why not? It's not like anybody has anything to lose at that point...
-
Because its more fun
-
I know right! I've been in 5 apocalypses, and everytime they try to kill me! So annoying!
-
Because there are no consequences. Everyone will die regardless.
-
Well you can't play golf any more and bowlings not an option soooo

Survival.

The apocalypse is the end. They're just trying to hurry the apocalypse up a bit, trying to rush humanity to the end if you will.
-
The way I see it, the people with really really -blam!-ed up "normal" lives will either just give up on everything, or know how to deal with the shit that goes thrown at them, thus making them the first people to band together, while the people who have had good, easy breezy lives will again, either break down, or think the only way to get what they want or need is to take it, or kill for it, thus making them the bandits. Eventually, after a few generations these roles stick until either of those parties dies out fully...

Resources yo.
-
Because such times brings out the worst in men.
-
Yep, I remember the last apocalypse, so many dead babies, we sure got back to normal pretty quick. Seriously though, the worst situations will bring out either the worst or the best of every person, or they will simply cave in and give up.

Edited by Broseph Stalin: 6/22/2013 8:04:16 AMCan't really say why. I haven't seen many apocalypses around here lately.
