I hate how rewards are tied to equipping new/featured gear as well.
Its especially frustrating knowing I have to give up my good gear that would be equal to T4, just to be forced to run T2 or 3 gear.

It's the constant tossing out our build and years worth of hunting. As if the new loot was worth chasing. Well now it's mandatory rather than a suggestion It's literally choking out the franchise. Fabricating level and power over and over Rather than fix the endless droning and boredom after 3 days of play. Making the level grind THE point of a dlc. You lose every other point in the process. I imagine the devs and designers want to make a sick game. Give us rewards that feel good and look good. But corporate doesn't want the "good" loot anywhere but the marketplace... Literally a paraphrased notion to an actual quote.... Like come on yall... That's who you trust to run the finished product...

Where I’m at. Also I think the OP is incorrect I mean you get to keep your tier gear so unless the gimmicky bonus gear set perks are super good it’s not gonna matter. But I digress. My old gear was already good so I’m just gonna aim for Tier 4 replacement armor, to do activities that require new gear. Just gonna keep my best old gear and live with it. Oh no not missing out on a *Does extra Kinect damage or *Causes void debuff or *faster reloading bonus armor set perk! The bonus perks are hardly worth the grind. What matters is getting back up to our old Tier 4 quality armor stats.

If you hover your cursor over the reward tier, it will show a rewards multiplier. Equipping all new gear will basically double your reward multiplier which means higher light level gear, and possibly high drop chance for T3, T4, and T5 gear. It also seems to dictate how likely an enemy will drop an engram when killed. So as tempting as it is to continue running old gear, its actually more beneficial to run low level new gear.

I noticed a distinct difference in rewards between myself (full new gear) and others (using some old pieces). Its really noticeable after a bit how far ahead I pull from them while running the same activities alongside them.

If you hover your cursor over the tier/reward rank icon, you can select it and it will show your reward multiplier. Having all new gear will boost it by 4x. Then your power level and probably guardian rank, seems to also effect your reward multiplier. With my old gear, I only get a 2x multiplier, but with all new gear, it put me up to 4x. Now im at power 309 and guardian rank 7 and its at 9.8x

Actually, wouldn't not buffing rewards at all result in the need for more grind?

Or maybe just put the drops at the max percentage in the current system no matter what gear you wear.

Yep. The worst part is T4 weapons are on par with Adept Rite of the 9 weapons, or some of the adept raid weapons. And if you grinded high stat armor that was 65-68 or had artificer armor that was 65+. Its basically on right between T3 and T4 armor.
