Trials needs to be more rewarding for less skilled players

Trials is one of the worst game modes when it comes to player population, and the less players you have, the worse the game mode gets. My friends and I have gone flawless countless times in D1, where the mode was rewarding. But in D2, we’re lucky to get three wins because only the highest tier players are in Trials. I’m not asking for easy wins or flawless runs, but people would find the mode far more appealing if everyone got decent stuff for participating, even if they didn’t make it very far. I feel good about the loot we get, but players that don’t reach card milestones we did practically get nothing at all. Aside from the engram bounty, players can expect no loot, and that is terrible design for a loot shooter. It’s no wonder no one plays it. But let players get something, ANYTHING for their time, and you’ll breathe life into the mode again. Here’s some ideas I think would help: -Give players tokens for match completion. Even if they get slaughtered, they can still walk away with an engram or two. -Every match should have the chance to drop Trials gear. With adept weapons added, there’s no need to bar players from the normal versions, at least with occasional drops so they keep playing. -Make bounties less nuanced and give more tokens for them. In a competitive mode, players shouldn’t be handicapped by bounties that require a specific weapon type to be used. Let them use their best gear and get kinetic kills or something. -Don’t reset Trial tokens when the mode is over. I know some think it’s meant to be stingy because it’s the “PvP endgame”. However, there are way more players that play PvE endgame, so this doesn’t justify the current state it’s in. A healthy population would allow players of various calibers to join on the timeless mode, while still facing the challenge of the Lighthouse. Please let players get more loot so they’ll have a reason to play.

  • My and my friends tried trial once... we won the first two rounds... then down the next three rounds getting stomped. Then we left. The end.

  • Trials is literally supposed to be the pinnacle of PVP... if you can’t go flawless you just aren’t good enough. Plain and simple simple. Try again next time. Stop complaining about stuff being hard.

    • In competitive sports there are leagues or divisions to match people with similar skills. Trials has none of that so they take a lightweight high schooler that just started boxing and put them against heavyweight Mike Tyson in his prime and say ok...go. Then all the Tyson's are going why is trials dying when all the lightweights quit playing.

      • The problem is that the playlist isn’t rewarding for the sweats or the casual players. Casuals get 1 or 2 pieces of gear per character per weekend and flawless players get disappointing adept weapons that don’t even have a separate mod slot for icarus. And with the skill floor increasing steadily, the mode is going to be facing the same problem as trials of the nine did as the only players in the mode will be streamers.

        • The problem is that Bungie has this relentless need to keep changing things....and different isn't always better. They NEVER should have moved away from the design of the loot system that was in place for Trials of Osiris in Destiny 1 during House of Wolves. Until they do that, Trials will be an event that simply keeps dying over and over and over again. Because it contains the seeds of its own destruction. If you remember Trials use to have two tiers of loot. Regular weapons...and Adept weapons. But then two different versions of the armor. Like you suggested, the lowest version of the armor dropped randomly after matches. So they were the "participation trophy" that the game needed to encourage average players to participate. Also weapons could be obtained by bounties that didn't require wins. So that allowed average players to get a TASTE of the weapons. So there was an incentiive...even if a mild one...for average playres to show up each week and play....and to try to get better so they could get access to the better loot. For better players, more weapons became available once you could start winning matches. Also the top tier armor became availabe with wins. For the best players, Adept weapons were only available if you went flawless. So the better players had trophies that were only available to players of their status. But with the current system design....you have none of that. No reason for average players to show up and get curbstomped. No reason for better players to show up and grind for flawless. Never mind deal with cheaters. So they just farmed the middle ranks of the event. Got what they wanted...but basically destroyed the event in the process.

          • https://warmind.io/analytics/triumph Just check the triumphs for Pinnacle activities in Season of the Dumb eeh Hunt. Be it NFs, Trials, Hunts, whatever. These numbers speak a clear language for whom this Game is designed. Joe Average surely has no place here when it is about Pinnacle activities lol. Veterans and HC always say how easy the Game is. But just look at those numbers. Easy for less than 1 percent of the players is more the Truth. I don't care about the triumphs, don't get me wrong. But it shows how "many" people go Flawless or do a GM NF or 1280 hunts. If you design your most difficult activities for not even 1%, good job? Trials is just one of these activities.

          • There's no chance that I'll ever go flawless. If there were grindable rewards, or perhaps slim chances to get get gear drops from end of match rewards, I'd probably play. Perhaps there could be a quest that gives people a path to an adept weapon, one per character. The top tier players would still be able to go flawless repeatedly to farm for their desired rolls, plus they'd get a 'free' one too. It'd also give lower tier players a reason to play, and by extension maybe enjoy themselves and stick with the mode.

I think a better title would be to make it more "accessible". Looks less like you're talking heresy against the sweaties' sacred grounds.

            • I go flawless every week and I fully agree. The more meaningful rewards bungie gives for participating the more people will participate, and as the player base gets larger the more balanced the matches become for the average player. The problem is bungie does not know how to give out meaningful rewards.

              • I agree, if I'm going to get steam rolled on a fresh card by a ex pro g fuel snorting streamer then at least give me a cool weapon or armor. Something, like as of rn the only reason I play trials is to get the armor from the bounty for transmog. I would love to earn stuff just for playing. I would definitely play more if the weapons and armor would randomly drop after matches

                • People want a chance at flawless and adept loot. The mode blocks the lower 97% from this. its a dead mode, unless they make it ranked or tiered. The lower 97% isnt going to save a mode for people who trash them all the time.

                  • If the lower 97% can continue to ignore the mode, there will be drastic changes coming. The player pop will continue to drop until its 80-110k each week, which will force bungies hand, as it wont be worth the time and investment. Its hardly worth the investment now. Lets hope for a major rework. Keep ignoring it and let it die. Only way to bring changes. Maybe some day bungie will add tiers or a ranked system too it.

I mean why would even want to play it? From what I understand from my clanmates the adept mods are either underwhelming or useless. The adept weapons give you 1 more season out of the weapons (which I still find hilarious that there are 2 Summoners in the game now with 2 different expiration dates...yeah sunsetting was well thought out) ...and even if you get there you have to still fight rng for a usable roll. F that lol. Why even try? Let the tryhard toyboys freeze each other and Felwinters each other without farming fodder.

Trials is wayyyyyy too sweaty. Even getting 2 or 3 wins on a card is brutal. More loot is always better, but in this case, no amount of loot will motivate me to participate in a game mode where we get stomped every time. What I would really like to see is iron banner loot. We used to get 10 new IB weapons per year. What would make iron banner insanely cool is if we got 1 new weapon each time we have an iron banner event (once per month). I play it anyways because it is fun, but it’s getting old not to have any new loot to chase.

                      • Giving more loot does not help sup-par PvP players with their frustration. Even if you get something, who wants to be stomped in the 1st Game from HC Trial players who farm the 1st Game for tokens all the time? This Game had six Years to make Crucible attractive to both HC and casual players. And I still believe, there could be something for both sides of the coin. But as it looks, atm it's good for nobody. As long as 9 of 10 games are totally unbalanced, no matter what mode you play, Crucible will stay unattractive for casual players and it becomes unattractive for HC players too because they only play against Sweatlords who know the same 1 HKO cheeses like they do. Casuals don't want to be stomped all the time and HC don't want to go against other HC players all the time. Both problems are connected and both suffer from a shrinking player base.

                      • Just eliminate trials from Destiny. Box it up in a new package and sell ToO to those that want it. I pay full price for D2 and am smart enough not to venture into trials. I would rather Trials weapons only be allowed in trials itself.

                      • The issue isn't that the playlist isn't rewarding. Because it is. The issue is that the playlist is too difficult for most players and that has an interesting mechanic to it. Let's ambigiously say that 100% of the population plays trials every week, then there will be a percentage of people who are at the lower end of the skill spectrum who feel "overwhelmed" and will not participate in trials the next week. During the next week, with the remaining 80% players or so, the same happens. Another part of the population stops playing trials because they feel overwhelmed by the higher end of the skill spectrum. Taking this process over a long period of time causes the population in trials to shrink down to the top 10% of trials players who can still stomach the gamemode. Obviously, if any player at any point thinks: "hey lets try playing trials", they will face an impossible challenge by having to face incredibly strong opponents (not to mention cheaters). This is the problem. This is what is keeping the loot away from maybe 50% (or more) of the destiny population. If you want to fix this, there is only 1 solution: play trials and do not give up. Because if everyone from the community does this, there will be more people in the matchmaking that are "beatable". And with enough perseverance, even less-skilled players have a shot at going flawless by getting lucky with the matchmaking. (this is coming from a player who has a 1.33kd all-time and a 1.9kd this season. I have never been able to go flawless and I too have quit playing trials altogether)

                        • Agreed. I'd like to see more of the player base in it. I'm proud to say that I've developed my character and practiced my skills. I'm way above average, if I can say so myself, but barely average in Trials. That's fine, but then what's the point of my skill if players who are at my level or lower avoid playing?? I don't have time or energy to commit to playing like those who get paid to carry others.

Im not skilled enough to go flawless: But I say no it shouldn't feel more rewarding for me. Rather: If Trials has Adept weapons than Ordeals, Raids, and Dungeons should have them too. Its not fair to allow access to op weapons to only the most skilled PvP players. A PvE equivalent should exist so that the most dedicated and skilled PvE players can earn similar awards. Glory Rank on the otherhand should offer more ewarding rewards for higher ranks. (Adept Weapons should be rewarded for high Glory Ranks) Playing Trials should be disable a persons artifact and use only gear score/ Trials should raise Glory Rank just like Competitive. Normal Trials should require a premade team but I wouldn't mind a Freelance matchmade mode where both teams are not stacked and must have mics active in game chat to play.(CoD does this for Hardcore Search & Destroy) We also need a vote to kick system in all Freelance modes.

                        • Bungie and the elite players would much rather see the game mode become an increasingly toxic cesspool as it dries up rather than reward people for participating.
