What I learned from playing crucible and gambit for the solstice armor:

In no particular order of importance and as always your millage may vary. Context: PvE centric player who is willing to do these activities if there is something I decide it's worth the grind. I've been sleeping on sidearms. Seriously not only are they fun to use but can actually compete with hand cannons within their range. And I was rocking a year one sidearm, Minimum Distance. Hakke precision frame, steady rounds and opening shot. I was actually shocked how well I did with it in the crucible and gambit. You won't lose motes if you don't pick them up. Since both crucible and gambit matches only required completions I played with that mindset. I put aside winning as honestly I didn't care either way. I just wanted to complete the matches and move on. So I just went into every match murdering every thing in my sights and allowed teammates to pick up the motes. The only time picked up motes was by accident or picking them up while I was using my super. If we were invaded it didn't matter if I was killed. Swords are underrated. They could be better for sure. But I actually found them quite effective at clearing the mote bank. Also, damn if it wasn't fun baiting an invader into sword range and taking them down. Quickplay isn't terrible. IF your just going for match completions. I took the same attitude with crucible as I did with gambit. Just do the matches. I didn't put any expectation of winning or loosing. Many times I just threw caution out the window and would play recklessly because why the hell not? Sometimes I surprised myself. You don't have to play the meta. I decided to go in both crucible and gambit with the stupidest loadout I could think of. Kinetic sidearm, either a scout or auto rifle energy and a sword. Most the time I didn't even switch away from the sidearm. I had fun with it. Was it the most optimal loadout? Hell no. Did I lose to "better" loadouts? Sure. But I didn't care. And I have to admit there was certain satisfaction knowing the other person was probably like "A sidearm? Really?" Invader mechanics are still bullshit. I saw ton of invaders using truth and of course hammerhead. I don't blame these weapons or the amount of heavy in gambit. Just like with queenbreaker, Sleeper, hammerhead and any other weapon favored for invasion, the problem is with the mechanics themselves and not the guns. Those guns are simply symptoms which exacerbate the invader mechanics. Did I have fun? I suppose. Towards the end of the gambit grind I found myself getting into it a little more than when I started. PvP or Gambit will never really be my thing for a myriad of reasons I just won't go into here as they have been exhaustively covered in countless other threads. So I leave those activities to those of you who enjoy them. Not my playground and I'm cool with that. Manipulating invader spawns during the prime evil phase can save you so much heartache On maps where there was clear high ground, I took it. I helped take down Envoys and ads at range and added damage to the prime when I could. Basically I played overwatch for my blueberries. And you know what? It worked. The invader didn't get an advantageous spawn and it put me in position to hammer them with scout rifle rounds. Polaris lance excelled in this role. In one match I killed the same invader 4 times. A few times they barely had time move off spawn before I had taken them down. Anyhow just some thoughts.

 • I think most people’s problem with Gambit is the feeling that it is a PvE activity and people aren’t used to losing in PvE. Gambit can be enraging but it’s not at all as awful as some make it out to be. Personally I can’t stand how the enemies take so much more damage in gambit vs regular PvE activities. You get accustomed to how much damage a taken captain takes in PvE and then into Gambit you go and it shotgun rushes you after you’ve put eight captains worth of damage into it and you’re dead. It kind of runs counter to how Bungie always talked about how they wanted weapons and damage to work the same in PvE and PvP which is why they would refuse to tune them differently. But then in comes Gambit and nothing at all feels the same compared to other activities. The AI enemies take more damage than in regular PvE, the Invader takes more damage than a guardian does in regular PvP, and the invaded seem at least as easy to kill as regular PvP guardians.
