I’ve recently been playing quite a bit of Quickplay (Redrix Quest) and I have realized something; I have absolute no idea if I am becoming a better/worse PvP player or if any of my strategies/weapon load-outs are working or failing.
A high k/d can be attributed to being matched against a low k/d team and unfairly wrecking them. Being killed a lot with a new load-out can be the fault of a very good enemy team, and not the fault of my weapon choices.
Simply put, the lack of skill based matchmaking makes it hard to impossible to improve. If long wait times for matches is the reason, I would be much happier to wait 1-2 minutes for 10 minutes of a challenging, fun Crucible match than wait 10 seconds for 10 minutes of torture. I know top-tier players may enjoy the randomness and long kill streaks, but a new guardian learning PvP while playing against the best Crucible players becomes torture, not a challenging and fun experience.

Destiny PvP works like this: Quick Play = CBMM (this is why mostly players can play normally and their weapons actually do damage, players mostly see the enemy appear on their screens on time....) Competitive = Rank Based = SBMM (latency, lag, bad hit detection.....) Iron Banner = SBMM (latency, lag, bad hit detection.....)

12 RepliesEdited by Fenrir's Heart: 10/29/2018 2:53:24 AMYou know the sweaty teams constantly stomping unskilled players in easy blowout matches will never agree to skill consideration. Lesser skilled players will quit eventually if the experience isn’t fun.

4 RepliesThe argument I've always got from the no SBMM crowd is you won't get better playing others of your own skill level. You have to get pub stomped to improve your skills. I've never understood that logic either. In all my years of playing adult sports, I've never got better by being mercied. All I learned is that matching teams up by skill level is more fun and enjoyable.

No dedicated servers, no sbmm.
-
2 RepliesBut then how will streamers post their 50 kill challenges?

Being blunt, regardless of sbmm (skill based matchmaking) or cbmm (connection based matchmaking), crucible will always pale in comparison to what other pvp oriented games offer simply because Bungie continues to build upon their garbage p2p servers. They can't implement sbmm with any form of stability due to these crappy servers, which means we're left with cbmm which leads to the game modes we currently have, where low skill players are very commonly pitted against tryhards and no-lifers. You also have the issue of the tryhards just having too much fun stomping the casuals in quickplay. It's their power fantasy, and Destiny is a power fantasy-esque game... at least it was supposed to be before the power fantasy was completely stripped for the sake of crucible balancing. Granted, Bungie is still working on slowly bringing back that power fantasy. Bungie knows the casuals are just going to jump to the next game mode when they finish their bounties while the tryhards are going to keep playing crucible after their bounties are done. Simply put, better to make a crucible mode that the tryhards enjoy so they'll keep playing than lose them for the sake of a crowd that's going to stop playing the moment they no longer have to. The only way you're going to win an argument about sbmm in these forums is when the tryhards move on to better games. Until then, you are going to be downvoted into oblivion by the tryhards the instant you even think about posting a complaint about the lack of sbmm because, if Bungie should ever decide to update their servers (never going to happen) and reinstate sbmm, their power fantasy goes away and they get stuck fighting opponents who can actually fight back.

3 RepliesSBMM for comp and CBMM for quickplay. I think the latter is already a thing. The former is NOT a thing.
-
Play competitive for sbmm. Although I heard that quickplay does have sbmm in it now and if it does then it needs to be removed from it. You play competitive for competitive matchmaking. Not quick play.

Edited by Eucadia: 10/29/2018 2:37:12 PMNo thanks, many people don't have enough free time to be wasting it on an even longer match-making associated with SBMM. Also, as well as lag and other known problems, SBMM destroys the purpose of Non-meta weapons. If every game is a sweatfest, it's almost impossible to have fun using weapons that are not meta and still do good. This makes the Meta weapons even more prevalent, resulting in even more whining and nerf posts.

8 RepliesGo play comp. That is the place where what you asking for is. Quickplay is not meant to be a test of skill, it is meat to be a fun, no preasure, quick match.

3 RepliesEdited by TJ_Dot: 10/29/2018 5:06:46 AMEvery person I see trying to suggest stuff like this makes me lose more and more faith in PvP If you can't tell if you're actually becoming a better player since there's a potential discrepancy in your K/D, then you're depending on it too much. Skill development is more than just a freaking number Self reflection is the key

1 Replyhere's how to tell if you are improving or becoming worse... did you play well? improving.. do you play well consistently? improving.... are you getting your can kicked regularly? not improving... do you make good or bad decisions that effect your lifespan? well you get the idea a number on a website is not going to tell you what you don't know and see for yourself.

just got my Broadsword last Sat, save all your crucible tokens for after you get it. It will then be added to the loot pool and it's possible to get a better version. I handed in over 800 and got five to drop an two were better than the Bungie roll. You want High caliber rounds!

27 RepliesCompetitive will test your skills, I can guarantee you that, it will also test your patience, your will to leave, your faith and will make you question life itself... lol Leave SBMM out of quickplay. If you want to sweat, go to competitive!

While I do think that connection based matchmaking needs to be the primary focus to reduce lag I also think that there needs to be SOME level of SBMM in quick play. SBMM does not automatically equate to sweat-fest matches. It may for those who have a decent KDA, but for those who are new to PvP it certainly doesn't. Without any SBMM then its always a sweat-fest for new PvP players as they are constantly matched against better players, some of which they have no business playing against because the skill gap is so large. So, while those who are good at PvP will get a chill match those who are new to PvP will only get discouraged and learn to hate it. Yes, you need to play against people better than you to get better, but that only works up to a point. Someone with a 0.8 KDA is only going to learn to hate PvP if they are matched up against people with 1.8 KDA (this assumes 100% solo players in the lobby). My KDA last I checked was 1.38 (not total crap, but definitely not Trials material) and I was matched up against someone with over 140 flawless Trials runs based on their emblem. What did I get out of that match? I got real familiar with my respawn animation. I don't have a magical solution but maybe there could be a skill gap threshold that increases as your KDA increases? Example (assuming 100% solo players): A player with a 0.75 KDA would get matched up against players with a max of 1.0 KDA which is 0.25 above theirs. As your KDA increases then that skill gap increases so maybe someone with a 1.4 KDA could get matched up against a 1.9 KDA which is 0.5 above theirs. This skill gap would continue to increase as your KDA improves and maybe once you hit a certain KDA then anyone above your KDA is fair game? To guard against long wait times the skill gap could gradually increase in order increase the player pool to reduce the wait times. For example, after X seconds the skill gap could go from 0.25 to 0.3, after another X seconds it could jump to 0.4. All this said it's obvious that matchmaking is not the easiest thing to get right and make everyone happy, however I believe that those who are new to PvP or are struggling to get past a 1.0 KDA should be matched up with people who won't just curb stomp them every match. The goal is to increase the player pool (which helps matchmaking) and provide an environment where players of any skill level can enjoy the game (aka, want to play PvP).

If only there were a playlist like this available... oh wait there’s comp...

3 RepliesGood points. I also believe that radar and aim assist need to go! Maybe not allow any OP weapons. Just stright up skill were the player has to aim. No radar will help to stop crouching campers who wait the whole game watching their Radar for some poor Sap to enter their cross hair's! Would be a whole different ballgame if they did that!

Edited by blade329: 10/29/2018 2:28:35 PMPlay Competitive mode then. That's where you need SBMM, not quickplay. I would prefer CBMM in quickplay, since lag is the biggest enemy in this game for me.
-
if you want to improve go to comp

I agree, I spent a year in quickplay for about 5 minutes for my first experience and will never go back. I absolutely suck at PVP but if this is what I have to endure to "git gud" I'll pass.

6 RepliesEdited by SirHeadPoppington: 10/29/2018 11:50:35 AMHow would you know if you're becoming better/worse with skill based matchmaking if you're always against people of the same skill? Then you have nothing to compare yourself to; you're playing people of your skill level but there's no way of knowing how good/bad those people are in relation to the whole population. And you would always (theoretically) have a k/d of 1.0 and so would everyone else.

It not just skill based, it seems one match nothing can kill me, I get shot and shot and just don't die and I decimate the other team like fish in a barrel, then I play another match and it is like my bullets are made of marshmallows, I can put a whole clip into someone and it doesn't even take there shields off but I seem to get killed with one bullet. That's the real issue, its either this Peer 2 Peer crap they keep making us use or its the Bungie Nerf Police saying hey, you've won too many games. It may be both for all I know. Seems like COD finally realized this when there games kind of tanked several titles back and they fixed that issue on there end, Bungie needs to do the same as I don't think Ill buy Destiny 3 if we have the same ole P2P crap like right now. Tha'ts what we all need to be complaining about and I know everyone know what I am talking about, we have all had games like this on both sides. We need constant dedicated server posts like we all did with Eververse, at least Eververse stuff didn't give you an unfair advantage or disadvantage, where is the cry for dedicated servers!!
-
i feel like there aren't enough pvp players left for any meaningful match making system to be implemented. even if it were purely based on connection you could still have long queue times and then laggy matches on occasion. I'm all for SBMM but D2 isn't.
-
Hahah how about no. Waiting 1-2 minutes?? I had to wait 5+ at times, game felt like a ghost town while matchmaking and lagg was unbearable. I'm all for waiting when I queue up for competitive. During sbmm I found a awesome pvp dedicated clan and allot of good pvp players on my friends list. However bungie will not re enable sbmm because most people like me will fire up a different game than wait for a seemingly empty game to populate a mode ironically called quickplay. Want sbmm, see how effective loadouts are and how good you are? Then there's competitive and rumble. Low tick rate, iffy hit detection and peer to peer (does this game even have lag compensation) is dragging this game down. And the playerbase.
-
In a p2p server the first priority must be the connection there is no point to have sbmm if the enemy is laggy. And this problem is more visible when you go higher and higher in Elo,kd,glory points cause less and less ppl are in this "rank"
-
The reason why it's like this is because 1.) Cbmm is the best way to go with a outdated p2p connection game. Everyone hates lag. 2.)streamers and YouTubers begged for this not because they wanted lag free games but cause they'd deal with more potatoes in a match than people on their skill level. This is why many want dedicated servers so you could have sbmm and 90% lag free games. Also would help track down those that are actually manipulating networks for advantages. But bungie won't do this why? 1.) Greed
