    "But we're supposed to role play that we are the guardian" Stop. You can still self place as your character and have your character provide reactions to the world they're experiencing. Personally I hate self placement characters and the point of most role play games is to be something you arent instead of forcing yourself into some husk of a character. Absolutely silent protagonists are fatal to a story driven game. Master Chief is quiet, but not silent. His lines are impactful becsuse he doesn't talk that much. That's effective for his character. If you're afraid of "putting words in our mouth" then hey I have a revolutionary idea: put in some legwork and make dialogue options, or rng roll some dialoge like we see in the strikes where we have different responses to different things, have some observations, interact with the world. Nolanbot is not a good surrogate for our speech. Ive never really liked his take on the ghost but the story of destiny should have dialogue beteeen us and our ghost. It feels completely hollow that all these things are happening and you just stand there and get talked at inbetween killing things. In fact it's unnerving: Npcs are expressing gratitude for killing an existential threat to humanity: "..." Ghost gives you a heartfelt speech about how hes glad he found you: "..." The queen of the reef congratulates you for taking down skolas "..." You've become the first in a new line of iron lords: "..." The city is burning and the traveler is under attack: "..." Our silent protagonist seems flippant and shallow and it was a negative on the story and it's unfortunate that Bungie is going this route when they could have had a more interactive story. Guess I'll get some popcorn for the 50+ cutscenes where nolanbot says things while we mime along.

    • I could cAre less, honestly. As long as bungie and Activision include more in-game vids/ Npc interactions/ cut scenes then I can live with it.

    • I see a lot of people talking like this is going to be a Game Changer. The Voiceless Guardian is going to ruin it for you, blah, blah, blah. Let me ask you this? Take a look at D1 vanilla. Look at the dialogue our guardians were given? What did it add? Did our Guardian Voice an opinion on anything? No. Did they offer an objection to anything they were told or the situation they were in? No. Did they voice any suggestions, plans, or alternatives? No. What did they do? They did nothing, but offer some useless one liner and maybe a joke or 2 at best. That is it really. I see people talking like a simple one liner here and there would add Depth to the story. Go look up adding depth. It does not entail what you have deluded yourselves into believing. One liners where you simply say one little thing wouldn't add jack squat to this game. In fact of they use the same voice actors as last time it would be far better to just remain silent than listen to lifeless, useless, robotic dialogue. Look I get it. I will not stand here and say it isn't disappointing me in the least. This was supposed to be a "new game" and Bungie's chance at a new slate. They are choking on it already. Thing is? Unless they go all out and get some real voice actors and some genuine dialogue? It really is not going to make any kind of difference.in the game's story. Chock one up to the Gremlins working on their team because they scored another point, but this Issue is minor in the long run.

      • This is why Bungie should interact with us with AMAs more often, not just because IGN wants to be special. Now we're just over a month away from release and we get this... Even if Bungie wanted to change this, it'd be extremely difficult to implement so close to release.

              • However briefly and short it was our guardians spoke in destiny I enjoyed it and wanted more of it, but they've done goofed with D2 and screwed up a few things. I guess we'll find out release day what was fixed and what was not.

              • This is literally the only thing about D2 that pisses me off. I get the whole the player is the character thing, but my argument is I can speak and have personality in real life, why shoudln't my guardian?

                  • I'm totally fine with it. IMHO, the need to have words associated with my character is highly overrated. There are plenty of voice actors in this game, from Nolan to Fillion, and they can carry all the dialogue they want.

                    Watch this and tell me our character being mute is a good thing. Ghost: "The SIVA replicator is destroyed. We found this near it." (Why is ghost saying this and not us?) *Guardian mimes along, offering the helmet* "Thank you, she would be honored" "..." *awkwardly looks down a little bit* "My brothers and sisters, I will see you again some day" *staring off into space* "You've given them back to me" *guardian and ghost look at each other for a few frames, I have literally no idea why. It almost looks condescending actually* Saladin gives you the sword you proceed to look cool. Why even bother with putting a face on our character? Like dear god every interaction we have with an npc is more socially awkward than I am ffs. Just put the helmet on and leave the guardian at the doorway, ghost is the main character give him the sword and let his zombie meat bag swing it for him. Our character being silent makes us irrelevant and incapable of forming bonds beteeen ourselves and the supporting cast. They thank us for doing all these heroic things and we just stand there drooling. Cut us out of the game and let the ghost shoot guns and destiny is the same from a plot standpoint.

                      In a dynamic story such as Elder Scrolls and Fallout, a silent protagonist is fine since we make or own choices. With a fixed story as would be seen in a Final Fantasy game, Shadows of Mordor, The Last of Us; we need to talk. Why? Because if you can't choose your characters responses then you at least need to understand their motivations. This is done through dialogue. Are we supposed to make our own legend? Sure. But since we're not really free to openly choose what we do (static story arc) we at least need some kind of interaction with the world. Otherwise we're just mindless robots. Hell, I've cared [i]more[/i] about a robot. Ever watch Wall-E? There's more emotive dialogue in his broken attempts at speech than or guardian has[i] ever[/i] demonstrated. If your goal was to immerse us in your awesome new game Bungie, I think you need a new director in your story telling department.
