I have been helping a friend of mine (23YO, 400 Warlock) through every Raid since AoT began. He's someone who has watched all the videos and is living proof that doing so doesn't translate into knowing an encounter. I'd be seriously stunned if you could find a random player who is a less desirable fireteam member than him. I wasn't on for the first week, so we started with VoG and there was an internal bust up during first week of KF, so we stopped halfway through.
His list of errors (some of these came well into encounters, not just at the beginning)
- not knowing what the platforms look like at Daughters
- not understanding the concept of counter-clockwise
- not being able to count to 3 correctly
- not seeing his screen turn green when he has the debuff at Golgoroth
- not remembering his position for Golgoroth CM
- taking one of the Brands at Totems well before anyone is ready, then not standing on said Totems
- not knowing what an Oracle looks like
- not knowing how Gorgons work
- thinking that Bolt Caster is good at killing Gorgons, or anything, for that matter
- not knowing how to use The Aegis but then being forced to because he can't kill an Oracle, having now identified them, without it
- not killing Supplicants whatsoever
- jumping excessively when Atheon is teleporting players
- 2 Raids later, still not standing on the Totems
- having to be reminded that there's a Gatekeeper that he's supposed to kill on the other side of the bridge
- having learned that Bolt Caster is bad, using a barely upgraded Young Wolf's Howl to kill Hallowed Knights and Wizards
- not knowing how to use the Sword against Crota, despite it being functionally the same as the other Swords he has used
- throwing SIVA Charges at Vosik far too early
- dying en route to picking up said SIVA Charges with high frequency
- using Stormtrance to clear enemies at the Death Zamboni mere moments after someone else has already begun enemy control
- not knowing where to throw SIVA Charges at Aksis Pt. 1
- not controlling the SIVA-controlled turrets
- poorly communicating which Captain is on his side, which Servitor is there and whether or not it is near the plate
- dying in an attempt to kill the Captain
- being unable to see a plate with a large red light coming out of it that is a few metres away from him
- standing on the plate, expecting the Supercharge to happen automatically
- not realising that you have to jump on Aksis' back in order to stun him and blaming it on Glide - this happened 2 hours into the fight
- thinking that low-impact Snipers and Fusion Rifles are good for boss damage
- huge over-reliance on Self-res
- almost never admitting when he's the one who made a mistake
Lo and behold, he has every Challenge Emblem now and is on the final step of the quest for Touch of Malice, having only obtained (i.e. been carried to) Black Spindle about a month ago. If my friends and I, as a fairly mediocre team, can put up with him and complete all CMs, you should be able to do any PvE activity with just about anyone.

It is always a crapshoot. You never know. But we should still be willing to help each other.

Yeah no. -blam!- raid matchmaking. I'm still going to prefer LFG with the usual "know what you're doing or get booted" post.

2 RepliesEdited by Khârn the Betrayer: 5/18/2017 6:57:20 PMThis is true! Not to mention that a lot of really great players out there have anxiety when it comes to rando-raids. They generally dont want to be the people who suck because of inexperience, so they tend to over prepare and be transparent that it is their first time. It is the unprepared liars that you need to worry about, but that is also the paintbrush used to paint every rando. Sprinkle in a few horror stories, with a dash of bad experiences and you have a terrible reputation stewing in the community about matchmaking.

Well now I am more afraid to raid with randoms in fear of picking up this guy!
-
6 RepliesNo thanks. I don't have time for lazy players.

3 RepliesEdited by Honkler: 5/16/2017 1:50:23 PMSounds like a nightmare. You're too nice of a guy. I will give it a few tries but if it's not working I got to go whether you're on my friends list or not. I'm not going to spend multiple hours in a 45 minute raid. Edit: On second thought you're not that great of a guy. You f*ck the whole community by carrying an assclown like that through challenges. How many teams will suffer in the future because this guy has the emblem but still has no clue what he's doing. Shame on you.

Sometimes you just gotta know when to unfriend someone man

1 ReplyI've tried raiding with players that do it week in week out & it's shit, I prefer to raid with players that have no idea, so what it's takes ages to get through at least they don't scream at ya for standing on a plate or crossing the bridge like a lot off d**kheads do. People that play this game like it's their life are the worst players to play with. If you don't have time to spend hours doing a raid, then make your own team that you can play with week in, week out. The worst ever are the players that scream at ya but die the most..

1 ReplyWhen I'm in a really bad and disorganized team, I'm usually the very last person to quit and just give up. I try to be patient because I like when people are patient for stupid me when I mess something up. It's just hard to find 5 other people, who are patient, who won't leave just because we have to wipe once, and who can learn how to do an encounter they don't know. And for me, doing all of this stuff only during my university's Christmas and summer breaks because I have zero time to play during the semesters. It's really discouraging sometimes, to the point of not even bothering.

Edited by TheArtist: 5/18/2017 1:00:53 PMNot afraid. If you're able to: 1. Listen 2. Cooperate 3. NOT DIE every two minutes while making the same mistakes over and over again. I can work with you in a raid.

6 RepliesI've never done a raid, so I look for posts in the recruitment section with "newbieswelcome." But 90% of the people I message(yes, I do search the correct username of the leader), either don't respond, already have a full fireteam(which is absurd because the posts they made had spots open), or are offline(which is weird because the post would've been made "1m ago" for example). The closet I've ever been to actually completing any raid was a couple WOTM attempts with friends( fireteam leader kicked for no reason the first time, second time the next fire team leader gave up), and one OG Crota's End attempt(had to leave in the middle). Never got any raid gear, which is sad.

1 ReplyI normally P.U.G. my raid teams. Gives me a chance to meet new guardians and sometimes help them complete something they never have before. Sometimes the raid goes smoothly while other times it like pulling teeth, but eventually we pull together and complete the task.
-
Sometimes yeah you get a bad set of players but now and then you get a good team for crucible or a raid
-
2 RepliesIm okay with raiding with just about anyone but an evildragonfly... Im more of a goodbutterfly myself... ;/
-
1 ReplyI not afraid I raid a ton every week and other day Iam really good at raids
-
1 ReplyI have a friend who is as bad/maybe worse. I would love to see them both in a 1vs1 lmao He's seriously bad at jumping. So much so, he had to bring his xbox round to raid so we could swap controllers at the jumping puzzle! We have unfortunately been kicked from a few raid teams. Unless they bail before hand. When ever he fails to kill adds or ultra's and dies... he says sorry i was reloading. But the last time he got caught shooting while he died 😂 So tonight we're going through his first WOTM raid hahaha... wish me luck!

2 RepliesAre you serious do you not know [stranger danger]
-
1 ReplyYour argument doesn't really work since there was still 5 other decent players to make up for the 1 bad one. Too many LFG teams have 3, 4, maybe even 5 people like your friend. Can you imagine trying to take 5 of him through a raid?!
-
I'm not afraid to raid with randoms...I just don't trust LFGs since my first time doing one back in Year 1. Took my chances on getting sumthin good. Kicked from that first group to be used and replaced by their friends. I was used lol And besides I hardly raid with anyone now since I got back to playing Battlefield 4 since I rewatched Battlefield Friends. I forgot how fun was that game xD
-
That's all I get to raid with. Doesn't always work out. But, I've had more good experiences than bad
-
2 months just to teach one player??? No thanks.
-
2 RepliesYeah I don't have 2 months to teach noobs. You can easily learn the encounters from YouTube videos
-
I have a lot of social anxieties when I play with people I've never played with before

2 RepliesBolt Caster works perfectly running the Abyss.
