Dungeons and Dragons

I've only seen a handful of threads here about DnD, but I was wondering what you guys in gaming think about it? I'm curious if you guys had the same impressions I did and if anyone was as ignorant as I was about it. I want to attempt to shatter the stereotypes surrounding the people that play this game. Anyway I recently started playing a couple months back because a friend of mine was looking to get a campaign going. Now before this I had heard about dungeons and dragons, but I always thought they were all these weird kids in high school (I know you guys can picture the type) who were forever alone that'd play it. Honestly I thought these people were part of an occult that worshipped an evil god when I was younger. I wouldn't touch the idea of playing dungeons and dragons with a 15ft poll. Though after my friend had explained it to me more in depth I figured why not? And I came to enjoy it thoroughly. Dungeons and dragons had become a weekly ritual for me. And as more and more of my friends found out that I was playing it the more they'd make rag on me for it. Until they found out what it actually entails. Needless to say we got them to play and they take part in it with me every week. But ultimately what I'm trying to convey is that people who play this come from all walks of life (for example vin diesel is a huge fan of DnD and loves playing it l found that very surprising) who are not a part of a occult that sacrifice small animals to an evil entity hahah So for anyone who's debating playing dungeons and dragons I highly recommend it. It's much like a video game with 10x more and better content. If curiosity is eating you further I'd be happy to answer any questions about the game.

  • I don't understand the stigma that's attached to this game. Sure, I played it before but i didn't really like it, but that doesn't mean someone else can't enjoy it and not be ridiculed for playing it.

        • Last time I played the tabletop I got massively wasted, hit on the bar maid, got rejected and went to sleep in the wrong bed. Before that, I 360 noscoped a cultist, inspiring my team to git gud. Needless to say, the sorcerer 1 shot the other 8 and made me feel inadequate. It was a good game.

          • It's fun, but when I played our group was too big (and we were teenagers) so nothing actually got done. It's a great game, though.

                  • A while back, I had heard of it, but (same as you) thought it was a fairly silly game because of all the stupid ways Big Bang Theory presented it on TV. But about three or four months ago, I found a group called 'Critical Role'. They are a group of Voice Actors with a man named Matthew Mercer as the DM. I figured "Meh, I'll watch it. I'm curious to see it" and within the first thirty minutes of watching I was laughing and practically crying. Forty three episodes later in a binge watching stream (each ep is about 3 hours long, maybe more) and if you couldn't tell, I was hooked. The way they all presented it made it look incredibly fun, and completely shattered the stereotype set by many others, I recommend watching them if you want a taste. Critical Role; Geek and Sundry Back to the point, after that I began talking to a group of friends, telling them all about the adventures that could be had with their imagination. Soon enough, I got them to play. I bought a starter kit, read the instructions, and the original idea was a friend of mine would be DM. That didn't work, he was lazy and couldn't be bothered DMing. So me, being a well improviser and actor for my drama class (same with all of us), I decided to take the role of DM with my voices and vivid imagination. We have only had two sessions so far, but my party of Human Cleric, Half Elf Druid, Half Elf Fighter and Tiefling Warlock have told me they were glad they had me as a DM, and ever since then, we've been talking about it and playing it. Now to anyone reading this and thinking it's just a nerdy thing, I can only tell you two things to prove you wrong; 1) My party is made up of 3 girls and one guy, all of us are not nerdy. One of the girls has never even touched a console game or anything. 2) Don't hate it until you try it. I used to hate it, now I have endless amounts of fun just talking about how much I know. Once again, a support anyone who doesn't know about it to watch 'Critical Role'. I promise you, it will be worth it if you love RP's of any kind. But yeah, that's my D&D story.

                    • To me, as a casual d&d player, playing dungeons and dragons is less about taking the game serious and getting through a campaign and more about just having fun with friends and trying to screw each other over with the decisions we make during the campaign. If you have fun messing around with a couple friends then d&d is a fun thing to do

They're a group of nerdy voice actors playing dungeons and dragons. These are definitely voice actors whose characters you've most likely heard before. Critical role features the voices of characters like: leon kennedy (resident evil), ellie (last of us), serana (skyrim), asura (asura's wrath), margaret (persona). Just...so many people.

                          • While I'm interested in playing it, I generally don't have the time or a regular enough schedule that I could play weekly. To anyone interested in DnD though, Projareds videos from his first "DnDecember" are a cool watch.

                            • My friends love to play too, but we don't necessarily agree with some of the rules that exist, mostly because at the time we began playing we were young and couldn't grasp the more difficult aspects. Nowadays our DM actively monitors the D&D R&D groups and rules. We still don't play by official rules but we've come a long way from the middle schoolers making dick jokes every five minutes.

                              • After playing for the first time I couldn't believe how much of D&D has been incorporated into video games. Really it's like the first rpg video game, powered by imagination.

                                • I happen to play D&D myself! One of my 40k friends mentioned he had a group he was planning on getting back together and he let me join in a couple months before the latest campaign. Every Monday night at 8pm we start getting together on Roll20 to play. I play a Tengu rogue (now multiclassed into gunslinger) by the name of Rhykas Indoller. I've included a picture of him that I got as a commission.

                                  • Probably from m standpoint, I've never played a character in DnD. Never needed too because I would always be asked to become Dungeon Master because of all my friends relying on me to create some crazy future?! type world, and I appreciate that they actually encourage my creative side (i'm technically a private author because my friends and co-workers buy my short stories and will always lend a hand to make them better). Which do you prefer? DnMaster or DnCrawler (player)
