I have a deep, philosophical question for you all

Option A

713

Option B

296

You are beside two train tracks. One of which has an infant baby on it and the other has two grown men and one woman. The two tracks come from a fork in the original track, and there is a speeding train going down it. You are helpless to stop it and have no way of saving these human beings. You do, however, have a choice. Choose Option A and you switch the tracks for the child to be slaughtered, or Option B, and switch the tracks so that those poor men and women die. Which one is morally correct? Edit1: So far it seems, as quoted by Talos, "The needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few". Edit2: You can't put the track in the middle, nor can the people save themselves. They are tied up. Edit3: For those trying to break the rules and derail the train, this is what happens and it kills everyone. Edit4: If you do nothing then you will be killed by crazed satanists and will be sacrificed to the devil in the most painful and excruciating way.

I've seen an infant crushed by a train and I still can't un-see that .... I'd have to save the kid only because I couldn't bare to see something like that again ....

  • Option C. Place baby on tracks with the others and allow train to hit all of them, doing my small bit to reduce overpopulation and therefore doing what's best for the overall needs of the planet.

    • Common philosophical premise, and quiet a good one. After making your choice remember that in all of these situations you are also at the end a murderer, either through action or inaction.

    • Morally saving 3 lives outweighs saving 1 however I would save the baby because there is less of a chance of it coming back to bite me in the ass.

As evil as it sounds 3 lives > 1.

There's probably a reason that they're all on the tracks, so I let all of them die

      • I must say this is quite the test. It would depend a lot, at least for me, what the three people have done with their lives. Do they contribute to society and its advancement? Are they good citizens? More importantly, do they understand the flaws of said society and actively try to make them aware to other people so that they can be fixed? If you saved them instead of the baby they would suffer from survivor's guilt not to mention I would probably feel like shit for killing a baby. If they weren't good people I'd let them die and raise the child as my own. I would teach it the ways of science and progress. If I had barely 10 seconds to decide then logic wins and the baby dies. Besides, I think everyone at least once in their lives wishes they were never born. Better to spare the infant a lifetime of disappointment and misery. I would also hope it would force the three people to live better lives knowing what was given up for them. If not, I would haunt them for the rest of their miserable lives.

        • Save the child (option B) cuz what u don't reAlize is that this is a time paradox. After u save the child, he/she will grow up to have a daughter and a son. The daughter grew up to become married and have a child. The brother who became insane and alone tied up the baby and his sister and husband. We playing the role as ourselves come across this dilemma and save the baby everytime.

            • I'd be wondering why the -blam!- is there a baby on the train tracks... and by the time I've made up some theory to satisfy the situation everyone is dead...

            • The man and woman have already had a chance to live life, it would be unfair to the baby to let it die after it was already born without living a life.

                    • I'd probably set it to run over the three adults, killing 3 people is more fun than killing one, even though that one is a baby, which undoubtedly is more fun to kill than an adult.
