I'm not butthurt, I don't suck at the Crucible (although I guarantee someone will look up my stats and try to tell me I do), I'm just telling it like it is.
It's a matter of time to kill. Shotguns have effectively 0 time to kill, while most other weapons require several seconds to finish a fight. This is theoretically balanced by the fact that you have to be close to your opponent, but nearly every map in Destiny is rather small with narrow corridors. Plus, you have plenty of abilities to assist you. Melee can be activated immediately after a shotgun shot to guarantee the kill. Felwinter's Lie can be re-rolled until it becomes a sniper. Sunsingers can abuse their melee overshield. Strikers have shoulder charge to assist their gunplay. Blink can teleport you right in front of someone (if you delay the button press you effectively teleport forward). A shotgun is strong enough to instantly end a bladedancer's super. I'm sure there's more, but that was just off the top of my head.
What about sniper rifles and fusion rifles, you ask?
Sniper Rifles
- Requires headshots or final round (which is only a OHK on high impact, low RoF snipers which are extremely high risk, high reward weapons) to kill instantly
- Has extreme amounts of flinch if shot, even with Unflinching
- Must be far away from your target, be using a low zoom sight, or get lucky
- Hip fire is awful and aiming down sights takes extra time
Fusion Rifles - stupid but not nearly as much as shotguns
- Requires timing and accuracy to be successful
- Will not kill instantly at range
Essentially, instant kills are meant to be high risk, high reward scenarios, but there is almost no risk when using a shotgun, as I've explained.
Remember to bump if you agree, otherwise feel free to prove me wrong.
Edit 1:
Added #Competitive tag
Edit 2:
Sure, shotguns are common in other games. But it's a power weapon in Halo, and in games like CoD other weapons have extremely low TTKs as well, so there's less of a discrepancy. My issue with them in Destiny is that in the same game you have weapons that kill in 0 seconds and weapons that kill in 3 or more seconds.
Edit 3:
Think of this as a request for bigger maps or nerfing secondary ammunition, if you wish.

I agree on some things and not on others. First off let me say shotguns should be taken out. In my opinion shotguns are perfect where they are. Except for one.(everyone knows which one) Felwinters lie has absurd range. Thats the only shotgun that should be nerfed.(rangewise) theres no arguing that. It is hands down best shotgun in the game via what ever bug that gives it ridiculous range. Secondly you are looking at the ttk wrong. Ttk just refers to how long you have between when you visually see Someone and when you will die. In games like COD the ttk is low. Basically you either shoot first or die. Not much room for alternate skill, finesse, evading, or other areas players can beat their opponent... Thats not the case in destiny or other games like it. (Halo, gow,) they have a higher ttk. Which leaves much more time for action. Just cuz someone shoots first doesnt mean you die. Shields, double jumps, extra health, are general things that will be in high "time to kill" games. They leave room for a counterattack. When you try and put those things in a low ttk game.... You get COD advanced warfare... And we all know how that is.... But with that said You are viewing shotguns biasedly. Obviously they kill people instantly. Like you pointed out with snipers though there are other things that balance the risk reward. Which is the main thing to focus on when comparing weapons. The risk in shotguns is that they are a rush weapons. When you run around fast the radar becomes almost obsolete. Every corner you turn could be either a kill or death depending on the distance between you and your opponent( excluding felwinters lie, which breaks this rule and fires a heat seeking slug).... Shotguns also lack in the amount of enemies you can take on. Blink into a room with 1 enemy. No problem. Blink into a room with more than one enemy, your -blam!-ed. Most other weapons are more capable of handling being in a room with more than one enemy except snipers. Both single shot weapons suck when your faced with more then 1 opponent. High ttk games are supposed to be more strategy, teamwork based games. Your team has big say in wether or not you die. If your goal was to solo the win your stupid to pick up a shotgun in any game you play. Shotguns are fine. Your a scrub. for those who didn't read it

Still waiting for these to get patched out.

1 ReplyIf you can't beat them join them.

7 RepliesBe careful bud you're dipping into hot tar when talking bad about peoples precious shotguns. Bottom line on shotguns they're for terrible people who camp in corners waiting for their supers. PvP guns that have no use in PvE. Bungie keeps trying to nerf them but forget that the maps are so small and close quarters you can't nerf them enough.

2 RepliesYOU'RE CRUSHING THEM, SEND THEM TO THE FORUMS CRYING!

1 ReplyRocket Launchers are far more annoying. Require absolutely zero skill to use and don't belong in all the PvP modes. Sure the ones with vehicles ya, have launchers and heavy machine guns.
-
1 ReplyIt's weird. You listed all these things that you considered OP but all you did was prove that the game does a great job of providing each class ways to beat and counter the other. So long as each class has its own counters for he other two the game is fine. As for shotguns, they're fine. You could also use them or use fusion rifles. Again, a counter.

2 RepliesHalo 2 did it right. 2 shot kills IF the player was close enough. 1 shot should drop shields for a melee or second shot to finish the job. While aiming down sights, shooting the head of a guardian should be the only means to attain a one-shot kill.

1 ReplyWithout shotguns, they can't cope or function. Get ready for a barrage of "Madcuzbad, git gud scrub, stay out of crucible, you suck, Ur b4d" type comments. PvP Shotgun users are pathetic little creatures.

1 ReplyVery butt hurt indeed you are

1 ReplyBuff shot guns so I can be op xD

7 RepliesWhy don't you stop complaining, or better yet stop playing crucible. Problem solved.

1 ReplyLook at all these hater comments. Why is it that in this forum the common d!ckhead is far more present than somewhere else? This guy has a point. I disagree with shotguns dont belong in this game. But i agree with the bad map design that benefits almost only close range weapons. Surely there are a few maps that benefit long range weapons... but the only two really big maps we have only show up in a non permanent playlist. And it is true that shotguns dont require any skill at all with all the options you have to prevent that acutually someone can stay out of your range. And he even forgot to mention that one mile slide everyone has. Shotguns are designed well. Its the environment that makes them noob weapons in destiny. Thats a fact.
-
2 RepliesOther weapons kill in around .8-.9 seconds for the most part while having much farther range. It's not that hard to stay away from close range areas.
-
6 RepliesNeither do supers, scout rifles, pulse rifles, hand cannons, auto rifles, fusion rifles, snipers, machine guns, and rocket launchers... but a game revolving around nothing but fisticuffs would get old very quickly.
-
1 ReplyAnyone ever use a secret handshake from the vangaurd vendor? To me, with hammer forged and aggressive ballistics, seems like the perfect max effective range for a shotgun. Any more and you end up with exactly what people complain about with the felwinters lie.
-
Stop running head first into people with shotguns.
-
my answer is a low TTK. no one would shotgun charge if you could kill them cod style
-
2 RepliesWhy not embrace the shotgun for maps where there are tight corridors etc and scouts/pulse / ars for the wider more open maps? I snipe in combined arms, salvage and skirmish for example on certain maps but will switch to shotgun on others. I think the map design forces you to question your loadout and adjust accordingly. I don't really like shotguns but if the map calls for one so be it. That said I got Felwinters as a drop this morning so now I don't have to worry about switching between sniper and shotgun ;)

2 RepliesA shotgun is a gun correct so any game with guns in it will have a shotGUN as well, case closed
