Imagine a world with no 9/11, no 7/7, no crusades, no public beheadings blamed on beliefs, no suicide bombers, and no witch hunts.
Now imagine a world where there is a cure for diseases thought to be incurable, where human lifespan increased due to advancements in medicine, where there is less war, where humanity is colonizing the cosmos.
Is this the world we were meant to have?
Edit: I have noticed that there are quite a few people that are saying you need religion to have morals. That is not true, empathy is a human emotion that is hardwires in our DNA. Morals have been with us before the invention of religion.

1 ReplyPeople would do anything in the name of scientific progress, even if it meant violating what we think of as unalienable rights. After all, on the secular view, morality is a trend, not an absolute.
-
Hmm that's funny because the last time I checked, people who murder other people usually do it for worldly things such as money not for their God.

5 RepliesTo say that the world would be better if we never had religion is a slippery slope argument, and all arguments for never having religion are simply anecdotal. Look at the bigger picture, where did people get an education before universities came about? Who supported these universities in the first place? People love to cite Catholicism in these types of arguments, but fail to reconcile for Christianity not being a knowledge suppressing religion and actually supporting the gain of secular knowledge for the most part of history. Of course Catholicism has numerous examples of suppressing knowledge, but that isn't their belief's fault, that is at fault of over-bearing rulers. A better argument would say that the world would be better without these examples of power abuse, rather than the religion itself. People also fail to recognize that religion was a huge factor in early civilization, one that may be accountable for humans being hopeful enough to thrive and spread further than the less than desirable conditions of ancient Mesopotamia. A stepping stone in western civilization. By the way, this is coming from an atheist.

Edited by Onxide: 4/7/2015 5:51:21 AMWe wouldn't be where we were today... you probably wouldn't exist, maybe not me or even these forums right now... we wouldn't be even close if religion didn't exist, because believe it or not, it is vital and necessary for our progression. Think about it, there would be no free will, no growth, no development. Science wouldn't be were it was today if it weren't for faith, not only in religion, but in humanity itself. Everything we know of today, whether positive or negative, is due to the existence of religion.

7 RepliesMeh, it would probably be just as shitty as the current world. Getting rid of religion isn't going to cure the human condition.

People will find reasons to be shit to one another. Why? Because most people are greedy and lack empathy

Like a lot of people have said, it would probably be around the same.

3 RepliesWell now, an idyllic world without conflict and disease just because there's no religion, person. Aren't we the wise and unique little snowflake here?

where humanity is colonizing the cosmos.
TOPKEK. Just because a bunch of sand people have no better things to do than blow the shit out of us or themselves, doesn't mean religion is preventing us from becoming galactic explorers.
-
2 RepliesPeople would just find some other excuse to kill one another. Because people are the problem.
-
7 RepliesThose things would have happened without religion. Religion was the excuse not the cause. The crusades was a land grab, we use oil they used God. Stalin and mao did plenty of horrible things without religion. Greed gets in the way of progress without religion so before you jizz yourself pay attention to how history had actually played out.

If you need religious morals to be a good person, you're not a good person.

K think about the benefits religion has brought besides war in done situations. most charities are religiously founded. Most peace programs are religiously founded. Most homeless shelters are religiously founded. This doesn't mean they wouldn't exist, they just probably wouldn't be in as of a surplus as there is now. Now some things that aren't even religious were created in religious civilizations. Like receipts for example. They were created in the Muslim empire. Also, some religions made some great advancements in medicine and technology! Once again, this doesn't mean they wouldn't exist, they just probably wouldn't be as developed

3 RepliesLol anyone seen the South Park episode where cartman freezes himself because he can't wait for the wii?

Sounds like the beginning of the end. One world religion. The anti-Christ! All the promises of freedom of death and riches. Follow Jesus and live for eternity

2 Repliesreligion is an excuse for war, and to control people who think differently to you. that said, we would still be fighting over stuff like: -Oil -Diamonds - Territorial Expansion - Race - Gender and everyone's favourite: money. "as long as there are two people on Earth, somebody is going to want someone dead" - TF2 Sniper.
