  • No one "looks" for mistakes. But, rather, when someone comes into the forum screaming and yelling about how they think they got screwed, and all you see is incorrect spelling, it can make a paragraph hard to read. It could also make people misunderstand what it is you're actually saying. Punctuation is very critical when communicating in written word. That is a true fact.

As a special constable of the Grammar Police I feel it necessary to correct a common misunderstanding. We don't trawl the forums looking for mistakes. We read the forums normally. We don't sift through text with a fine tooth comb looking for mistakes. Those mistakes stand out like a sore thumb to anybody with any reasonable level of intelligence. When you see the same mistakes time and time again it becomes almost impossible to not comment on it. The problem is that there are too many poorly educated people on the internet and not enough personal pride in public perception of one's self. If only we weren't outnumbered by morons!

            • I generally put on my Grammar Police hat when I see people flying insults like "you're an idiot/retard/window-licker", yet they include horrible misspellings or grammar mistakes.

              • I don't think people are actively looking for mistakes but rather they stand out. Pointing them out is just a courtesy. If you made a mistake on something, wouldn't you like to be notified? I would dare say that because of the grammar police, there are less people here that mistakenly interchange "your" with "you're" due to all the flame they get.

                • It's not really a matter of spending time looking for errors. I mean, these things stick out like a sore thumb. An occasional mishap is no big deal, but when you see people using then and than, are and our, your and you're.....etc..... Or, sentence structure....for instance: "I helped my uncle, Jack, off a horse." "I helped my uncle jack off a horse" Grammar can be really important in some situations - Jack You're conveying a message to an audience through letters, to help them understand your point.

                  • The funny thing is that posters quite clearly have to bypass the autocorrect on their phones, tablets, PCs etc. in order to type the way they do... And that is just sad.

                    • Why do people point out grammatical errors? Simply stated; it makes the argument carry weight and makes a person seem intelligent. Knowing how to use their, there, and they're along with you're and your drastically changes your entire sentence. There is almost nothing worse than an unintelligible post from someone who cannot execute basic grade school grammar except for someone who uses "u" in place of the incredibly time consuming "you." Exceptions can be made for those who English is not their primary language.

                      • Actually dude, you can check out the articles posted all over the Internet by supposed "journalists," for everything from video games to international politics. They are RIDDLED with grammatical errors; rife with spelling mistakes. Inundated with terrible editing mistakes. It's symptomatic of a much larger problem; people dumb down their writing on the Internet, because "itz the interwebz, dawg. Taipeeng n speelleeng no it not matters heer," and they've been dumbing it down with so-called "text-speak" for generations now. So, in short... NO ONE knows how to write properly anymore. Ever heard the saying "practice makes perfect?" or "practice like you play?" That's what people are doing these days, but when it comes time to actually play, they just write how they've been writing every day. Like complete shït.

                      • I'm actually glad so many people make so many errors. It helps identify the threads worth reading, and the threads not. I also use it as a proverbial PH strip in replies to determine whether or not a person merits a response. 9 times out of 10 if someone makes common spelling and grammar errors, they are young and respond with garbage full of insults and poor logic. A typo or lazy sentence structure isn't the issue. It's when a person clearly has a poor understanding of language, or is obviously sounding out words that they likely don't fully understand the definition of that I realize i'm conversing with an idiot and should stop.

Well, as someone who writes for a living, I care about the English language, and I hate to see it be torn to shreds by those who don't care. Proper communication is the key to keeping a society intact and thriving. To break the communication down into phrases that can be distorted, confusing and nonsensical also has the ability to collapse a society. Want a good example? Watch Mike Judge's Idiocracy.
