I Can't Do This Anymore, I'm done.

When the PSN servers went down around Christmas time I was forced to take a break from Destiny. For me that break ended today. I know the PSN servers have been back for a while now, but I could not bring myself to come back to the game. I found myself feeling relieved when the servers were down. I had an excuse to not be playing. For the first time since release, I could stop playing and not worry about falling behind. I started PC gaming again while I was away, and I have had a great time. My phone buzzed with a message today asking me to play and I obliged. We didn't play for very long before the person I was playing with signed off. Since tonight is the last night Xur is around, I checked out what I could upgrade, and it turned out I desperately needed to upgrade my Gjallarhorn. If I was going to be continuing my break, I at least needed that upgraded right? Then I saw that Xur had Kuncklehead radar. I needed that upgraded for my main's subclass, despite the fact that I've already put hours into upgrading it in vanilla Destiny. Then it hit me. What the -blam!- am I doing? Why am I playing this game? I come back after a week-and-a-half hiatus, and do you know what my night consisted of? Glimmer farming... -blam!-ing glimmer farming for three hours straight, because I didn't want to miss out on Xur's upgrades. Something dawned on me as I was sitting in my usual Glimmer farming spot; this is not fun, I am not having fun right now. In fact, this is agonizing. All I want to do is stop playing. This is how I realized after playing Destiny since release day, that I hate Destiny. I hate Destiny for the time it has taken away from me. In the short while I was not playing, I was actually enjoying myself gaming on my PC. I was actually enjoying myself not farming all night while my girlfriend waits for me to finish. I was having a good time not feeling like every action I made was carefully controlled by Bungie. I haven't even been playing Destiny for more than a few months, and I already feel like it has been a huge drain on my life. And worst of all, I was never actually having a good time. It isn't even like Destiny is even a good game! If you are going to sink hours of your life into a video game, for God's sake make sure it's actually a good one at least! Quit while you can guys. This game utterly sucks. You are all just mindless drones programmed into doing the same thing over and over. Get out while you can. And no Deej, we cannot be friends. You are promoting a game you know is garbage. I don't feel sorry for you. You and Bungie deserve all the hate you get.

  • We found Neo....but seriously, now that you are AWARE that the game is consuming and draws you in, you're better prepared. So play casually, do activities that are fun like raids with friends or strikes with friends...never do something because the game wants you to do it, do something because YOU want to do it. Waking up is a great step. :P

  • I came to the same realization weeks ago man. I know how it feels. From this point on I'll only play Destiny for the sake of playing a damn game and have fun doing so. (Namely raiding and PvP) I'm tired of it being a boring chore.

The game isn't necessarily supposed to be a chore in which you need to get done everyday. Gaming is a hobby if you do it often and shouldn't be consumed in it. Longevity and variety don't coincide in videogames because typically they are catered to one specific audience and with that, the game itself is one type of game with limitied possibilites. That is why life, having a family to spend it with and such never gets old because there are endless possibilities you can do with them. A videogame on the other hand, is one of those many things that you do in life and therefore should not be your ENTIRE life. I've seen people say they play the game 6 hours a day. I might be able to pull that number once every few weekends with a videogame before becoming bored and moving on to something else and I'm a highschool student who should have nothing but time to play videogames and that's true, but I like to play other games as well to get my fix of something different, rather than 6 hours of the same thing. For some people, yes, Destiny might be the only game they can play because of time constraints within their day but that doesn't mean it should be all they do when given free time.

  • I really understand what you mean. Im finding the game a bit tedious. But i just cant stop playing as i want to get my character up to top level. Glad you broke your addiction. Ignore the tossers posting on here, they're more than likely 40 year old virgins with no girlfriends/ wife's, and if they aren't they are kids who soon will be.

  • I hear ya. I was a bit ahead of others as I quit for a few weeks before the Dark Below. I came back to check it out, that lasted another weeks or so, and I haven't touched it since. There's just no reason to go through the grind, because you've already seen it all when the grind starts. You don't even need to grind raids. There's no new harder raid to do afterwards, just the same raid on a harder difficulty. The gear you'll want for the next actual new raid will be the new vendor gear that will replace all your raid gear. Then the Crucible is just bad Halo. Not a step forward. I'm softer, I move slower, I can't even aim while jumping essentially, but everyone's got supers, insane grenades and shotguns. No vehicles either. No Big Team anything. Yes I've been playing Master Chief Collection and yes even broken it's way more fun.

  • Glimmer, strange coins, motes of light, spinmetal, spirit bloom, helium filaments, relic iron, ascendant shards, ascendant energy, weapon parts and armor parts, exotic shard, and now the dark below materials, eris rep, iron banner rep and all the other rep for vanguard and factions, and the old weapons and armor which became close to useless ... i agree a lot of grind ...

    • Thank goodness it is getting a bit monotonous. Now I have time to get off my butt and get a few chores done around the house. But I still have that Mida Multi tool to level up, and the new Dragons Breath. And I have to get some more Radiant Shards for my raid armor, and I still need that pair of Raid Gauntlets for my Warlock. And I really want to waste some time running the lamps with my Hunter to learn how to use the new Don't Touch Me gauntlets. Damn I guess the paint in the spare bedroom will have to wait, and my checkbook will live another week without being balanced.

    • I actually think the game is, by and large, rather good - just not as big and expansive as was promised. It certainly has tons of potential. That said, Glimmer farming is stupid, awful sh!t. It's really even worse than material farming was before it. I've written post after post here and on Reddit begging DeeJ to tell the development team, LOSE FARMING. Of all the mindless, monotonous, brain-dead grinds in the game, it's the worst. I can completely sympathize with your frustration. It is just a game. I actually like to take breaks every once in a while. It does kind of suck that so much attention was given to the addictive aspects of gameplay and so little given to things like a cohesive story. I'm ironically sure that Destiny 2 will be a much better game, but also that Bungie will have to do quite a bit to regain consumer confidence by that point.

    • Hmm... ok. I'll play too. When did I realize I wasn't having fun. Actually, when all the friends I made, all the bonds I made, have started quitting 1 by 1, and when playing solo, it doesn't last long. I miss playing with ppl I ran from lvl 20 onward. I miss laughing at friends that died in particular manners during raids. I miss celebrating the total butt-whooping we give everything from campaign to crucible matches. The 30+ friends that I had made JUST playing Destiny have started fading 1 by 1. And when trying to do some of this stuff solo, it's not as fun. It's not a complaint, it's pretty much the truth. It didn't matter to me how redundant the content became. I've played a few mmos, so i was used to it. It was fun with friends. Friends make the grind easy and forgetful. I'm holding on for a bit longer, but it may be time for a hiatus until the comet stuff comes out. Just have to wait and see

    • I think I'm getting to that point myself. It struck me while I was running VoG hard for the millionth time. I asked myself why on Earth am I playing this raid again? Why am I playing any of this game again when it's just the same thing over and over? For loot. Loot that I'll use to play through the same content over and over. That's basically Destiny's endgame.... Endless repetition to give you more opportunities to have another roll of the dice that is the RNG loot system. For some reason though, I can't quit. I think it's just because of the community. Because of raid nights with my friends. Apart from that, I'm not having much fun..... I've given up on bounties and Dailies altogether.... Not even sure if Nightfalls are worth doing anymore with their dreadful drop rates. I'm gonna get my Titan raid chest tomorrow, then put the game down for a while 'til the Crota's End Hard Mode comes out. I'm burnt out.

      • funny. with the time off for the holidays I knew I would get burnt out playing one game for that long. with PSN being down I played some single player games, I played on the computer abit, when PSN came back up I hopped back on destiny and had a blast for a few days. when the new years time off hit, again I knew playing destiny for 4 days straight would burn me out. I noticed diablo was on sale in the PS store and picked that up and have been having a blast in it. yet even with all of that, I'm still looking forward to the weekly reset again, and doing my nightfalls and weeklys and most of all crota and helping my group and all my other friends get they stuff, then going back to enjoying diablo and maybe some other games too.

        • Glad you came to your senses. It's garbage, boring and pointless wasting hour after hour "grinding" for something that is beyond your control.

          • I had a similar realisation when the DLC was released. Instead of it providing me with more reasons to continue to play, the lack of additional content combined with having to start from scratch leveling up everything, reduced how much I wanted to play. I still. play Destiny all the time, but I am gradually losing the obsessive need to complete all of the bounties and dailies etc. I have been hunting Ice Breaker since I missed Xur selling it and have recently decided Hawkmoon is my second choice, but reading posts like this makes me question why. Once I have them, then what? I can use them to do the same thing I have been doing up until now without them I guess... I still enjoy completing the raid, but after completing the VOG recently I realised that this enjoyment comes from the interaction with the team, rather than the raid itself. I'm sure I will continue to play this for many more hours despite everything I've mentioned, but jumping into Halo it's nice to be able to shoot someone, who drops a maxed out weapon, which you can then pick up and shoot someone else with.
