don't dismiss those without mics
So I was looking to beat Crota yesterday and posted on the forum. After a few minutes I get invited to a game. It was just me and him (I'll call him dude from now on) at first. Dude messaged me that his mic doesn't work but he can hear me. I told him that a lot of people might not be down but I'll hang for a few minutes. Five minutes later we had a full team. I told the team that dude couldn't speak but could hear us. Anytime dude wanted to say something or ask something he messaged me (smartglass on my phone is clutch).
So, we go to start and everyone asks who wants to use the sword. Everyone hesitates. Dude messages me and says he'll do it. Team is ready and we begin.
In our first attempt we got Crota down to half health before the wipe. All in all, our team had promise. After a few more wipes and some glitches (crota followed dude off the bridge and ran up the stairs. It was hilarious) we finally beat crota. We started calling dude the silent assassin. Dude then messaged me again saying "not bad for first time holding the sword?"
Not bad at all dude.
Needless to say we added each other since the team was very cohesive.
So don't dismiss the mic less. Sometimes they can have a lot of skill that can be just what you need to get things done.

8 RepliesI mostly play at night and I can't use a mic, since my wife goes to bed early, so I don't want to wake her up. But I know my way around the strikes and crucible, but nothing for TDB or raids like the VoG.

That is a good story (you told it well), and props to you guys for giving him a chance. One mic-less person in a group is about as far as I'm willing to go. Any more and communication really starts breaking down.

i play with people who dont have mic's all the time. doesnt bother me. probably better for them not to listen to my cussing anyways. and smartglass is def the way to go. i friggin love that app

I have a guy that I regularly raid with who has a speech impediment and does not like to use his mic for obvious reasons. He mutes everyone else and relays information through me to tell everyone in the group. The guy can outplay any other Bladedancer I have seen. The guy is a miracle worker with the Relic in VoG as well. Just because someone prefers to not speak or is incapable of doing so does not mean that person does not deserve to be picked up. Sadly though many people who play games online are immature shitbags who make fun of him and I have seen it happen so he keeps to himself. There is nothing wrong with that and he should never be excluded for choosing to do so. The "MIC OF GTFO" people need to realize that they are being ignorant when they assume anyone without a mic cannot play or that someone who does not wish to speak is doing so out of laziness. Has it ever occurred to any of you morons that these people who aren't responding are incapable of doing so? Or that maybe they can play just fine but don't have a mic? God forbid you take a chance and let someone who wishes to play with you.......play. As long as they can hear you they are entitled to play just like anyone else and idiots should realize this fact.

I have a Mic and use it during most high level excursions. However, I'm in general a very quiet person. I think I had one run of the vault on hard where I didn't even talk, and just listened. During Crota's end I wouldn't be caught dead without one, as it's the easiest answer to lack of communication. But here's the thing, I like that you found a guy who didn't have a working Mic but still had a willingness to communicate and at least listen. If he showed none of that, I would discredit him. Dude might be proof if concept or an exception to the rule. Either way, glad you guys got through it.

I don't use a mic usually myself because either I have kids in the room or it's bedtime for half the house, may invest in a throat mic for this reason but until then I sure hope I can find a group that is willing to have a silent soldier along who WILL kick a$$!

As someone with a broken mic, its frustrating to be able to communicate with the team but since my audio output is broken (and 360 mics suck) its like one way communication for me. Every now and then i blast my tv so i can hear but since i cant control the volume in destiny, its freakin deafening. My friend and I skype so he can relay anything that they say to fight this.

6 RepliesMic is just a mindless screening tactic for the lazy to avoid investing any additional effort. It's totally arbitrary, everyone can't talk at the same time anyway. I have a mic but I normally don't talk unless there's an engaging convo taking place about something outside of the game. Let's face it, as complex as Destiny (or any MMOish game is) you can get by with a lot less talking than the "must have mic" culture would lead you to believe. Mic in Destiny is like item level in WoW.

English is not my mother tongue so I hesitate to use mic, even though I knew I can use the mic on my phone's ear pod. I really don't know what you guy thinks.

I have a friend with a stutter he used a mic once, people aren't kind Personally I don't like them I am on the phone practically all day for work the last thing I want to do when I get in is talk or like yesterday listen to some rude guy eat chicken, it was disgusting But......... given the complex nature of the raid (VoG haven't done crota yet) I use mine when raiding I am going to look into smartglass though sounds useful although not for the raid If anyone wants to add me for raids gt same as user lvl 30.9 titan (waitng to get new arms from eris bounty then will hit 31) and a lvl 30 warlock

That's cool. I consider myself lucky when people are willing to raid with me even though I don't have a mic. Makes me work a lot harder to hold up my end and try to support others to make up for my lack of communication. Not saying that's a bad thing. Don't think other people mind when I take care of all the oracles or take down praetorian after praetorian

People that don't have mics I will say "dance if you can hear" half the time they do not dance. Not only that, more often than not in my experience they are not aware of what is going on. Like if we have to wipe, everyone wipes and there's the micless wonder bouncing around like super man. It's just usually not worth it to me to take the chance being as there is way more people just as skilled as you're silent assassin that do have mics.

4 RepliesBest story I've read all year. I too am known as the silent assassin for not using my mic (various reasons) and find myself getting through this game better than most people with comms. Still hard to find anyone that gives us mic-less a chance though. As soon as I'm in a team it's "hey that guys a beast!" A smart player in PvP, VoG is easy, can solo half of Crota's End lol and can use the sword pretty well as a Hunter. About to be level 31 - if anyone wants to give me a chance: ScarletSolitaire (ps4)

Even the quietest players need to be able to make important call outs. Messaging doesn't work when you need to let a player know that a minotaur is on his 6 ready to beat his ass. In strikes I don't care but in the Raid... no mic, no invite!
