I see a lot of negativity posts here. People claiming they are bored after 4 hours. Other People burning through the game in 17 hours, claiming they beat and finished the game. Etc.
I think the main problem with Destiny currently is. Is that Bungie is behind the Halo games.
The Halo games, just like the Call of Duty and Battlefield games, just have a single story campain (you usually finish in 10-16 hours average) and then you are just left shooting eachother in the face on PVP maps.
And that is the problem right there. People are treating Destiny as yet another Halo, CoD, BF game. Rushing through the Story Campain missions, get bored and even claim they beat the game.
They are completely unaware that they basically only touched like 20% or what the entire game has to offer.
Most these People don´t even know you can pick up Bounties at The Tower (starting from lvl4) and then enter the maps in Exploration mode.
Exploration mode is the core experience of this game! Here is were most of the stuff happens and how you obtain the best loot / rewards when leveling! It´s also the main way to gain Vanguard reputation! Vanguard Reputation you need to get the best gear at lvl20 (along with Vanguard marks from strikes), unlock emblems for your class, etc.
- Bounties
- Scout missions
- Public Events
- Harvesting materials for Upgrades
- Exploring
- Hunting
All stuff you can do in Exploration mode. It´s basically open world, where you run into other People, help eachother With difficult encounters, like bos mobs and Public events. Etc.
EDIT: As was pointed out. There are also parts of each map, like Kings watch ( http://destiny.neoseeker.com/wiki/King's_Watch ), that won't open up to you until you reach Level 20. So even at Level 20, you are encouraged to get back to each map and explore new areas.
Then I haven´t even touched the Strikes and the Glass Vault RAID (that isn´t even open yet until Next week) to get the best endgame gear and push yourself from lvl20 to lvl30.
Then I also haven´t touched the sub classes yet, opening up at Level 15.
I think it´s a real shame! And a lot of the Day One reviews out there are reflecting exactly this!
I don´t know what it is, if it´s Bungie´s fault? Having been too secretive, giving out too little information and details about what all there is to do in the game.
Their main website isn´t really helping either, with just sparse descriptions. /sigh
EDIT: Someone brought it up and Complete forgot to mention it.
People also have the freedom to ignore most of the PVE part of the game and just play Crucible PVP, Level up through PVP and buy gear on Crucible PVP vendors.
Just another strength of this game and the freedom it gives to People in what they want to do.

3 RepliesEdited by Fanboy3k: 9/11/2014 11:40:31 AMThe game has plenty of pros: the models, both gear and player look great. The landscape and over all look of the game and even the layout are pretty good as well. The controls as expected are intuitive and precise. The combat with either weapons and or abilities is fun. The progression, while a bit vague as to what exactly I'm doing with it does get excited to receive a buff to a favored ability. The equipment mods and buffs while small in variety (thus far) are a nice addition The cons while few are glaring: The narrative is thin, I dare say even thinner then HALO. Its vague and fool of plot holes at best and at worst a complete failure at drawing me and making me feel like a bigger then life hero.(I expected something closer to KOTOR or Mass Effect in scope the way the game was hyped) The missions lack variety and also fail to make me feel like I'm having a real impact on people or places in the universe. (Small issue as this could always be addressed via patch) I cannot communicate with anyone that is not teamed with me (no one teams with me) IMHO some of the enemy models and their presentation seemed lacking (Vex for instance?) I dont like their models, they look like cheap toys inspired by a bad after school cartoon and while im told their evil this was not convincingly sold through game play/narrative I believe the pros I listed and any I did not out weigh the cons, though the story imo is a huge failure. I would advice Bungie to get new writers for future content because who ever they have at present is not cutting it. (some one green lit it though so they are not solely to blame.

1 ReplyYou bring up valid points that are all true and people need to be notified of all these. But my only issue is getting friends because nobody really wants to join up. Besides that the game is amazing.

Edited by SpiralingPnuema: 9/11/2014 1:02:34 PMBRAVO! you have hit the nail right on the head and the guy below you both... i think the game is incredible, you want some story? use the best companion app ive ever used in a game, the companion app is the most useful tool any game dev should envy Bungie over. The grimoire cards which you can view on the site here or on your phone you get the lore and story on the cards and they only give you a little bit at a time hence so many challenges to get them. The game is a RPG with fps elements bottom line. Even WoW when it first came out was boring at first till they kept adding things here and there and expansions to open it up. Bungie can keep adding loot at will , they can open up new areas that are not DLC...than when the DLC happens like a mmo adds new paths, abilities, loot types, enemies etc... I read one the higher ups at bungie was worried about early reviews cause there is so much that i bet no one has seen yet, considering the timed raid areas.... and the embargo crap i keep seeing is is ridiculous the servers were not up, they were not live the day before release how can you review a product when there is no people to play with etc.... I love the fact there is no chat unless you party up, like Dark souls or Dark souls 2 i hate listening to some little kid whining about something , or crap talkers who want attention, it curbs all that non sense, but once again this is a action RPG were talking about sure it feels like halo as far as the physics and control and the gun play but the rest feels like Borderlands/Diablo/WOW vibe grinding is normal in a MMO, being it Bungie you know there is tons of stuff hidden no ones found yet... Play the game how you want to just know when you get it, don't compare it to Halo just because its Bungie they are doing something new its not even the same kind of game remotely beside being in first person. Once this game is out in the wild for a bit they get all kinks worked out and start changing and altering the world since it is a MMO action rpg fps. A good example but totally different game is Burnout Paradise the game on the disc resembles nothing of the game that is now after all the DLC, physics changes, atmospheric effects etc its a like different game entirely.... With destiny they can keep adding stuff at will, fixing issues, the dlc expansion areas, timed raids, opening those locked doors, the sky's the limit on what Bungie can make this game become from the launch and into the future. I'm sure were gonna see bad reviews here and there for the people that just don't understand what they are playing and when the game alters in a few years they will re review it and those scores will go up. Bungie created the Halo franchise these guys are not idiots and there is a reason they are game devs and we are not...They have a huge plan but for that plan to happen this game has to do well which i think it will it needs people to be on the servers so the game world does feel alive without those people destiny would not be....

Exactly, this game has longevity, even more potential, and nooks and crannies to explore. You're not force to PvP or PvE, I think the fact that there's no guidelines that it intimidates people, nowadays game coddle you into a linear way of progress and they can not appreciate the gem of a game this is.

Your the smartest person I've seen on here

8 RepliesExactly this! People are treating it as more of an FPS than an RPG.

3 RepliesI'm level 20 and kings watch is still closed, so is the jovian complex and a lot of other places.... They said the game starts at 20... But nothing new for me. The raid isn't open either....

1 ReplyFor me the only problem is the lack of communication

6 RepliesEdited by Roadlesstraveled: 9/12/2014 12:18:08 PMDestiny is fun solo, but there are so many social glitches that right now it can't be played with friends. I tried to party, then do a Fire Team - it just won't connect consistently. Thinking of taking it back and trading it in. I think when a game is released, it shouldn't be a beta anymore, but a real functional game that does what they said it could do - allow teams or friends to play together. This game falls way short. They could of bought a few servers that work. They could keep those servers from booting players off frequently. They could make it so that I could play with my friends (we tried for 2 hrs, then went solo to level up, but that's not why we bought the game is it?). It's supposed to be social. If you can't talk to the person you want to play with, then how is that social? It's not - and that's called a rhetorical question. And Bungie knows that much at least. Follow-up comm check edit: I checked my connection last night and it was and has been an open NAT (Xbox One). I was able to play with my sons (no college dorm servers) for about 3 hours, which was great. But then around 10:30-11pm EST we individually kept getting kicked from my youngest sons fire team. I got the codes BEE and BABOON, which are general networking errors with no suggested resolution. This is all Bungie, not the user. Shameful, it's still a beta.
-
More or so my problem is the lack of communication. You can't even talk in pvp unless you're with a party which is a shame. Same with in open world. It was supposed to be a highly social game but anyone I even invite to a fireteam never joins. Which points me to the fact that you have to wait once you hit 100 of each point which is kinda lame. Why restrict users? They claim they want people to have that awesome advantage when they do raids and get awesome gear but can only show it in Iron Banner and limit people from getting it with special points. Point taken, just let us be free with communication and no restrictions. People would be so much happier.

Kings watch doesn't open at lvl 20

True Say!!! It's good that the people that don't give it enough time are leaving already. More fun for us! Survival of the fittest in a way :)

I found an old friend from CoD on the game last night. He was given the game as a gift and didn't think he would like it. He was only at level three but he was LOVING it. It is different, and people need to accept that. I've been playing CoD from the start (pc to begin with) as well as others like Medal of Honour and all the usual. They have become boring and repetitive. Same-o same-o. This is different and I like it a lot. As for CoD, Ghosts has about 55k playing in the evening with Black Ops having about 160k playing. Who can play the same game for two years without getting bored?? I can't and the server issues are awful with that as well. Give Destiny a chance for goodness sake.

Everyone is entitled to what they think, but people saying this game is crap are completely mad. For me it has everything, not just a MMO or PVP its got everything. Just love it. You could give people the best product in the world and theres always someone who will find a negative thing to say about it. Cant wait for the DLC or to finish work and get back playing it!!

3 Replieswell that is not a problem for me the main problem was the story was like what 5 missions long though I did do all the side missions like I do in every mmo but the main story missions themselves where FAR TOO SHORT for all the time they spent on the game the only did a few main story mission it does not make any sence to me I beat the game and did all the side missions in about 2-3 hours even swtor that had and still has a terrible reputation had FAR MORE story line for just one class alone surely bungie could have done far better then this pathetic attempt and not only that but I have already encountered hackers in the game I mean how long has the game been out 2-3 days what is the firewall and security measures like are they even there for a company that has such an AMAZING reputation like bungie to have put so little effort in the campaign it very very very sad I spent 60 bucks for the game mainly for the soryline I have always loved bungies imaginative story telling expertise but this was a huge letdown

Yes, this!

You have said every last word I've wanted to on this forum! I'm glad others think this way

3 RepliesDude... there are those who just don't wanna do side missions. They just don't. They wanna stomp through the main storyline and be done with it. Fine. But I live for the side missions. That's why I play these games. Those sides always make the main course taste better. In fact, I usually pay scant attention to the main storyline until I've exhausted every side that interests me. I milk it baby, and that's what I'm gonna do with Destiny. I'll savor every bite of the sides I can handle and the dive into the main course. I paid 60 bucks for this game I'm gonna milky ever cent of playtime and more out of it. Bring on those sides.

2 RepliesI feel pretty positive about my experience so far but there is one bit that rubs me the wrong way. Its basically how the game is so quick to wisk you into the core gameplay. There is so little explanation behind the plot, so little foreground. As soon as the opening cutscene ends you have a ghost in your face and that's it. There is so much presumption going on that it makes the game feel devoid of any intricate writing. Yes I like peter dinklage's voice, but getting only 2 or 3 sentences to hear every hour just doesn't seem like enough There was a part where your ghost (or maybe it was the speaker) glosses over the war between the fallen and the darkness, but I didn't want that be glossed over, I wanted more details. It just feels like they went with the laziest route on story telling possible, like they assumed that their audience wouldn't care about how authetnic of a setting they are playing in. FFS... try harder. Also I have a sinking feeling that once I finish the 'story' missions and get some good gear that I'll be out of content. Haven't tried pvp yet
-
Another thing you forgot to mention was the strike playlist, and the weekly heroic mission/ strike. You get the heroic mission and strike when you reach level 20. They feature modifiers such as arc burn. Arc burn makes arc damage do about twice as much damage (not that if an enemy had an arc weapon they do a lot of damage to you too).

1 Replywhat the heck is with the getting kicked off of Xbox live every time I play destiny I can play or do anything else but play destiny I play for about 10-20 minutes then it kicks me off Xbox live not just disconnect from server full blown kicked off Xbox live then it gives me the error code your console cant connect to Xbox live I have to sign out then back in I dislike it very much im tempted to return it and level cap at 20 what the heck

11 RepliesEdited by theShabok: 9/10/2014 8:41:14 PMI've only played for about an hour and a half, so if I'm ignorant or way off base then let me know! The thing that disappoints me the most is the lack of customization off the bat. I realize this game is still vanilla, but I really hope loot becomes more common and doesn't force you to pair up with people in order to obtain anything meaningful. To me, the whole point of the RPG element is to build the character in your own unique way. The customization overall just seems so limiting at this point. The game is ultimately loot driven, as with any PvE metagame, so there should be more loot in general, not just from 5 chests/area and some bosses. I don't like killing a bunch of enemies just to get my ammo back and scrappy XP (give me some money or something to "sell" pllleaaaassee). All that said, this game is so much fun just to play and i can't wait to see how it evolves in the future.
