Shoppers who abuse express lanes should be shot.

Is it just me, or does it seem like every time I go to a grocery store such as Wal-mart or Winn Dixie, there are always assholes who have 50+ items in the express lanes, even though they are clearly labeled "15 items or less?"? The actual number varies from store to store, but it doesn't matter. It's always a relatively small number. Yet despite the very conspicuous signs, some dipshit who has about a billion items decides to go through that lane. The workers don't say anything, I assume they aren't suppose to chew people out. But it pisses me off. Today I went to the grocery store to get some produce. I was in a hurry so I wanted to use the express lane, since all the other lanes had a shitload of people in them. Yet some fat lard in front of me, ( her diameter was so vast, her blubber actually knocked candy off the register as she waddled forward), had about 60 items. It took 12 minutes than it should have to get to my order. I finally lost my patience and I said "Excuse me mam." I made sure I got her attention, then I asked "What does that sign say?" while pointing to the express lane sign. "It says this is the express lane doesn't it?" she answered, all 5 of her chins wobbled. Her bulging eyes between her grotesque flabby cheeks gave me the impression that I was talking to an oversized pug. "Yes, now what else does it say?" I said rather calmly. It took her a few seconds, then she read "20 items or less." Then I asked "How many items do you have?". At this point, she turned back around and ignored me, and continued to pay for her mayonnaise, twinkies, and chips, and other garbage. "That's a lot more than 20 items. Can you even count?!" I said. Still she ignored me. After paying for her edible diabetes, she slowly waddled out the door, followed by a few flies. As I paid for my stuff, I asked the girl at the register why they don't enforce the 20 item limit. She shrugged her shoulders, said "eh, I don't know. They get all pissy when we send them to the other registers." This is bullshit. People like this should be taken out back and shot in the face.

  • People are supposed to have common courtesy, and not slow down the express checkout lanes with lots of items, but of course people are douches and take advantage and store employees are told not to say anything for risk of offending a paying customer.

        • > Goes to Wal Mart > Has cart filled up with at least 20+ things > Goes to Electronics to buy a album > Goes to register at Electronics > Asks if I can pay everything here > Register worker says yeah > Everything gets bagged up and loaded > Passes by other registers by the exit, see them all mostly full > Avoided waiting

          • I had a similar experience, save for a few details. Wasn't an express lane. Was two carts of junk food. The lardy was trying to pay for it all with food stamps. Not everything was covered by food stamps, so she had to waddle to her car to get money. Waddled back and took another five minutes to finish. I don't mind welfare, but it could use better regulation. Much better regulations.

Those people surely are annoying. Though I am very impatient when it comes to retail situations anyway. I move as quickly as I can in order to get out of there as quickly as I can. Everything and everyone who even slightly delays me annoys me. Everyone. If you're in an aisle in front of me, taking up more than half the isle so I can't briskly walk around you, I'll probably be a dick to you. If you're standing in front of the dairy section, trying to choose what you want to buy, and I have to wait one millisecond for you to make up your damn mind and get out of my way, I will probably be a dick to you. If you use a check in the check-out line I will be secretly plotting your demise. Though I admit I am worse when it comes to line. Retail or not, I -blam!-ing hate lines. If I have to wait in a line, I am definitely thinking about hurting everyone in the line with me. Any extra delays, such as the moron with more than 15 items type, will just make my anger more obvious, and my murderous fantasies more extreme. I have to acknowledge though, in light of the "they should be shot" hyperbole, that I have no intention of acting on my violent urges. I will probably be a dick to them, but I'm not going to hurt them. I don't think they should be shot either. I think everyone should instantly get out of my way and let me do what I have to do in order to get out of there. If they delay me, they should have to move to a different line where they have to wait behind someone even less considerate than they are, and waste a bunch of their time and or patience.

            • Being a person who used to work in retail, you get paid so little nobody gives a shit, minimum wage means minimum labor, I wasn't even learning anything important aside from when anyone's in a grocery store there all a dick, worker or customer, to be honest it's workers vs customers. The worst thing I can remember is in "training", they showed us a news report of some 40 year old deli worker who had worked there 10 years, usually worked 10 hour days, took the bus back and forth, waited for said bus for 30 minutes when leaving and how blessed he felt to work at the store. Granted he worked at what I'm assuming isn't a big chain like walmart or target, corporate wanted us to be like him, -blam!- that, retail blows and I'll hopefully never have to work it again.

            • When i worked in retail, I had a few customers that came up in my line with a buggy full of crap and had the gall to ask me, " i know i have over 20, but you don't mind, right?" Me: " Yes , I do, but more importantly, i bet the folks behind you who DO have less than 20 items mind as well . This is the express lane for a reason, ma'am. Management didn't like that one bit. Didn't get in trouble, but i was strongly advised not to do it again.

As someone who works in retail now, I shared in your frustration yesterday. At about 5 PM it was getting very busy and people with hundreds of items were starting to come in out of nowhere. One of the Head Clerks already left, the other CCs were out somewhere else as told to me by the floor manager, and I was the only one there to bag or put things away and so on and so forth for three separate lines, including an express lane. At that point I just think: "whatever, it's my job to do this and I'm getting paid, whatever, I'll just work as fast as I can and try to hurry." Which would normally be all I have to say to psych myself up for an onrush of people. But no, what pissed me off this day was that a lot of the people coming through had kids, in my age range of 18-22 and so on, and a lot of the shit I was bagging was obviously theirs. So as I'm struggling to be in 3 places at once and to keep up, these kids just stand there and stare at me with their arms crossed and don't do shit to help me bag their junk food. I blame the parents partially for clearly not enforcing their kids to do any labor for the stuff they're going to cram down their hole soon, and the kids for being too lazy and irresponsible to help someone who is clearly doing twice their normal work during a rush hour. I'm not asking them to do my job for me, but when I can barely take care of one lane at a time while groceries are piling up on two others, and these kids just stand there and text on their phones or stare at me with their arms crossed, it honestly pissed me off a lot. At this point we're exchanging the food for their money, and it is out of our hands by that point. If as soon as we hand them the food and they the money to us, and get outside of the lanes with their food in their hands, it is not our responsibility what happens to it. If everything was ready and in good shape to be eaten after they paid for it, we're not liable for their food being smooshed or destroyed when they get home. The least they could do when it's as busy as that is bother to help bag and put their shit in the carts, because I don't get paid enough to ask thousands of questions, put their stuff away in an ordered fashion, then have to bend over for them so they can just watch nonchalantly as I try to not crush their goods. Because I so easily could just toss their shit where I please at that point. Had several groups of people just stand there and look at me instead of bothering to lift a finger to help put THEIR food away. If I was the parents of a lot of their kids, they wouldn't be allowed to eat anything that I just paid for if they're not helping to put it away. This is at a Kroger store in my case.

The pay is shit so the only people that want the jobs don't care if it's not their immediate responsibility. If it's not the employees that don't care, it's management that doesn't care. Or it's some other dick high up on the chain chewing the manager off about a negative review even though the customer giving the negative review was causing shit, thus forcing the manager to kowtow and in turn forcing the employees to kowtow. I had it especially bad with people and bringing their pets into the store. And no, ESAs are not service animals. They don't have the right to be in the store. You can bring them in unvested but I'm going to think you're a lying son of a bitch who deserves a swift kick in the shin followed by another one to the groin. And no. Even if your toy dog is a *scoff* service dog, he can not ride in the cart. Don't even get me started on the people that would park in the middle of the lane, on red, flick on their hazards and weight. Worst example I ever saw of this was some dick double parking across two occupied handicapped spots waiting for his wife to finish shopping. The only solution at this point is public shaming.

              • its because... they work the register in a grocery store. Not to be a dick. But unless they are young/retired/just trying to get by, the odds are they dont have alot of self confidence, nor do the like confrontation. Usually people that dont deal with shit like that and arent afriad to say something, also want to do more with their life. "Dont rock the boat" and all that.

              • Express checkout lanes hardly even exist up here. Somebody sees that you have less items than they do and ask you to go ahead of them. Canada ftw.

                  • I usually go to Publix, or a Farmer's market, but in Walmart's near me there's like 6 people on each lane, because there's only ever like 4 lanes open, so I see where the "abusers" are coming from.

                    • Nope. You just live in a shitty place. And I been to four different places in England, 2 in Wales, 1 in Portugal and 3 different Walmarts when I was in Florida and that never happened. Then again we never used the express line because there was four of us so that's a lot of food...

                      • I laughed whenever you made fun of her obesity, am I going to hell? I feel for you though, it never fails to be the person who's got way to many items and then decides it's time to cash in their -blam!-ing food stamps. The cashier never knows what's going on so it takes an extra 10 minutes for them to fumble through with that and all I wanted to get was one simple gift card. That's all! Something that should take me literally seconds turns into several minuets. My Walmart has recently gotten self checkouts so that's a rare scenario now.
