Do you negate the resolution or affirm it?
Did you take debate?
I think that literally everyone can benefit from learning the rules of debate. You learn critical thinking, logical fallacies, and you hone your listening skills. I took debate in high school and thoroughly enjoyed it and learned a lot.

There was debate every single day at my lunch table in highschool. Always debating about sports. Much better than the class.
-
Not debate specifically, but logic. That was a mandatory class in my parents' day, and my generation desperately needed that class.
-
I don't think there should be a whole class for it but English/lit (whatever your school called it) should have something like a 2 week break where they teach proper debate.

1 ReplyEdited by HurtfulTurkey: 4/4/2014 6:11:13 AMI agree. I'm actually surprised to hear people didn't get exposed to it; without specifically looking for it, I was in three classes that centered around debates. Being able to form a rational argument for your beliefs is pretty critical to success in life.

Every child should pledge their elegance to the United Sates of America.
-
No... You know what should be required in high school? Personal finance classes. Knowing how to balance a checkbook and the importance of credit > being able to argue
-
3 RepliesNo. Debating is a waste of time. We need to go old school and start duking it out when someone disagrees with us.
-
I have to agree with you. Let's see children grow up and learn how to use reason before violence.

Edited by Legend To None: 4/4/2014 7:17:38 AMNo but in our classes some teachers allowed us to debate whenever as log as we stayed on track and learned a few things. Those are the best teachers

Why take a class when you can just go on the internet and have the same experience?
-
Affirm and yes. I'm too tired to make an argument for it right now, so I'll pass that burden to my partner in the next round (being my future self, of course).

Debate is great. This is my first year doing it, it's been stressful but totally worth it. I actually just qualified for state last weekend!

1 ReplyI am a master debater.
-
I'm taking an AP Government class, and debate is held every few weeks. It's a lot of fun

I'm not 100% sure though since I didn't take it in high school. I took logic classes in college anyway, but they were easy for me.

2 RepliesI don't take debate for a few reasons, the main ones being that I don't want to wake up early on Saturday and I have more important classes to take.
-
2 RepliesI wanted to do debate, but the debates are of very low quality to be honest.
-
My school doesn't even have a debate class The RS class does them since a new teacher joined, but by then it was the end of year nine and I hadn't taken it as an option.

1 ReplyEdited by Ultra: 4/3/2014 7:43:36 PMAre you a mass debater? Do you mass debate often?
-
3 RepliesNo, financial ed, computer programming, and calculus should be mandatory though.
-
I took debate class and then said -blam!- it when people couldn't even do anything besides talk about one subject over and over.
-
I actually agree lol
-
Always wondered why schools never taught anything I actually needed in life.

9 RepliesNo. God no...
-
9 RepliesNope. For the same reason I would hate if band became a mandatory class If you don't want to be there you ruin the experience for those who do.
-
In history in college we usually had a debate a week over controversial subjects such at the nuking of Hiroshima and Nagasaki among others. I rocked those -blam!-ing debates, no matter if I was in favor or against.
