We finally got to see Destiny gameplay yesterday and I, for one, was underwhelmed. I needed more explanation of what was going on.
Was the demo taking place along a linear path, or was it an open world?
Was the big fight at the end a dynamic event, or a scripted occurrence?
How does the respawning mechanic work, like when Jason was revived or the extra players showed up near the end to help in the big fight?
In all honesty, I think I would have much preferred a documentary-like video where the designers explained in detail what the player will be able to do, how game mechanics work, and what sets this game apart from other shooters. I still don't know if this is "Skyrim in space" or a persistent-world game akin to PlanetSide 2.
I really love Bungie, and I was waiting for that gameplay reveal for a long time, but I feel very unsatisfied by it. What does everybody else think?

They don't show the whole damn game in one siting. What they showed excited people at least cause the whole ps4 conference was boring as heck. I fell asleep twice.

1 ReplyDon't judge a book by its cover.

I didn't like the way it was presented. they were trying too hard to make it seem like they were just two guys playing the game rather than developers who knew every inch of that sequence inside out, and it painfully showed. rather than feigning surprise at everything that happened they should have talked more to the audience and explained what was happening. I get what they were trying to do but they didn't pull it off. the game itself looked pretty solid though, definitely looking forward to more gameplay videos!

I pretty much agree. For a first time ever reveal it didn't really blow me away. I know that we'll be seeing more soon but that was supposed to be the big reveal and it wasn't that special.

The demo was heavily scripted and they had godmode on. However that's to be expected since they only had 10 minutes to show off the game. The actual game will end up being open world from what I hear with those public events being dynamic as you put it.

You have to keep in kind the length of time they were given to show us their game. They only had roughly 10 minutes to display the core feel of their gameplay, of this massive game. You can't expect them to be able to show you a good sized amount of story, characters, etc. in 10 minutes. They simply wanted to reveal how the gameplay would look and feel, and they'll explain it more in-depth as we go along.

First of all it's not like the game is coming out next month it still has got a while to go. Second of all that's the first actual gameplay footage we have seen from destiny.. I don't see any reason to be "upset"

bungie just loves to tease us, but one day we'll all know exactly what we're getting, so stay strong and be patient.

2 RepliesI felt somewhat unsatisfied but I won't deny that the trailer and gameplay demo was cool. One of the best part of the presentation was seeing Jason Jones! It's like finding a rare bird. Anyway, I have somewhat same concerns as you OP. Personally, I wanna see big open spaces with combat, consistent and challenging AI that scales to size of the battles, and a deep RPG system that doesn't require a manual to figure things out. On the technical side I would like to see player movement animation and UI to improve. The in-game character movement looked very outdated and it seems Reach had a better system running. If you look at the "The Division" by Ubisoft (another MMO shooter) it had a phenomenal level of character movement animation and made Destiny's character movements look primitive. Hopefully, Bungie's listening to us and watching their competition.

7 RepliesThere's supposed to be another demo later today which might go into more detail.

1 ReplyEdited by Xmark120: 6/11/2013 5:30:25 PMI had my expectations low. And it payed out. I hate Borderlands. You can say whatever you want, but that game seems like 90% Borderlands, to me.

Later today and throughout the week you'll get the explanations that you've been looking for, I know IGN has a hands on with Destiny in a bit.

I think this generation of games is going to confuse the consumer. Graphics have hit a tipping point. Everything looks amazing. Good games will be defined by solid gameplay + social integration. People aren't used to having to be informed in order to sift out the good titles. Hold tight OP. Destiny will still surprise you.

I agree. It was over hyped and didn't seem to deliver much.

7 RepliesI actually thought it was pretty excellent. The event was a public event, so for now I'll assume it's set up similar to GW2. Other than that I really don't have many questions that concern whether or not I'd purchase it.

4 RepliesWhat was with the ghost anyway? Did it even do anything? I just saw it appear in someone's hand and then fly off.

i didnt like to so much yesterday, but today i thought it was pretty good

I agree.

I thought it looked brilliant.
