Would you want to pay higher taxes if we received more benefits from the government? I know I would. I'd gladly pay more money if it meant that everyone could get the healthcare and education they deserve, and yielded more financially-stable social programs.

My personal belief is that the government is only there to maintain order, stability and infastructure(roads, bridges, national parks, public facilities), not to hold everyone's hand and do things for them, especially when its a service I don't need/benefit from. So no, I would not willingly pay more to receive more "benefits" because in the end, that means I'm not paying for myself, but for others who don't work because they are lazy. I would, however, pay more taxes if that money would go to paying off this country's debt.
-
Definitely. I never really feel cheated when I see money being taken out of my paycheck going to taxes, it just is what it is. But if they take more out, I'd at least be happy knowing that money is going to projects to make the country a better place.

4 RepliesYes. People need to stop whining about how much they pay in taxes. The loopholes some rich people use are absolutely ridiculous.
-
Yes, I took JFK's 'ask not what your country can do for you – ask what you can do for your country' quote.

Being a minor, I don't pay taxes. But it already irritates me how high taxes are now, and what a shitty state our country is in. If I were an adult, I would not.
-
Of course not.
-
3 RepliesHell no.
-
I want taxes raised, yes.
-
2 RepliesHell No. Its your money, use it when you need it. The Government is too corrupt for me to give them money. I mean, if there was a perfect system then I wouldn't mind so much but when they take much of my hard earned cash for some stupid government spending thing. Or for things I don't believe in then leave my money to me for my own charity work.

Edited by Egerspurge: 2/6/2013 3:00:43 AMNo, what's mine is mine. -blam!- you and your problems.
-
*snort* No. Hey Mr OP, you can still give the government more money now if you are so inclined, which it seems you are. They accept donations. No one is stopping you now. Or is it, you are only willing to pay more if everyone has to pay more?
-
Assuming that I had a job, I would pay higher taxes only if I knew I would receive some sort of public good or benefit that I wanted.
-
2 Replies
Would you want to pay higher taxes if we received more benefits from the government?
lolno In fact, I 'd love to have the option to pay less taxes if it meant being permanently excluded from certain government programs, such as Social Security.
I know I would.
Good for you. Might I suggest you make some donations to the Treasury? The rest of us would like to keep our hard-earned money.

Anyone who wants to voluntarily give more of their own money to the federal government is absolutely capable and free to do so. But the truth is that everyone spends multiple hours and goes to great lengths in order to minimize the amount they pay and maximize the amount they can keep (with so few exceptions that they are not relevant). For example, Warren Buffett could have EASILY "paid more" but instead decided that it would be better to force/require others at his level (and below) to pay more. If his conscience was "bothering him", I don't know why he would have had teams of accountants do everything they could to make sure that he kept as much of his money as possible. PS: I wonder how much of his $100 Million take from the sale of his television network to Qatar that former VP Gore is going to keep and how much is going to the feds. You'd think that he would be so eager to pay "his fair share" that he would demonstrate voluntarily what so many others are being forced to do. If I wanted the government to have more of my money with little or no chance of seeing any of it back (or responsibly spent)? I'd just buy lottery tickets. That's another easy way to give the government your money voluntarily.

With the current system and how the money is spent? No. If spending is reformed and overhauled? Sure. I currently feel too much money is wasted. If programs were run properly, I'd be willing to pay more even if I received no direct benefit from them at this time.

8 RepliesEdited by Love Sosa: 2/5/2013 10:47:20 PMWe shouldn't have to raise taxes of our money to help others that aren't working as hard as us. My dad shouldn't have to wake up at 4:45 and come home at 6:00pm to pay for some guy milking welfare and healthcare when we have our own to worry about. They should just kick off everyone abusing it and give it to the poor people who need it to support their family. Not the people buying alcohol and drugs.

11 RepliesI think people would if they controlled where their tax money went to. I would want all my tax money to go to NASA or a lab that is trying to cure diseases.

With the way the system works now, we're losing so much money in the UK to benefit cheats and scum who only have huge families so they can claim free housing and for money from the Government, which can only come from the tax payer. So no. However, if the system were reformed, and cheats eradicated (e.g. food stamps for the people who need it, instead of a payment, and no high-end or larger housing, say), then maybe. Although a 20% VAT is already a lot. And petrol is already taxed at around £1.15 per £1.36/litre sold.

1 ReplyI absolutely would. The majority of Americans are hardworking people, even those who are down on their luck and are either unemployed or underemployed. Not to mention the fact that better healthcare and education systems would benefit us all.
-
if they are like they are now? no. if they actually worked and got people off their feet and back into the ring? yes.
-
1 ReplyIf these programs worked then yes I would.

3 RepliesMore taxes = NEVER MORE!
-
8 RepliesNo, because I could just pay for those things myself.
-
6 RepliesEdited by Sesto: 2/5/2013 10:56:27 PMYes. I'm not sure what is with Americans, as they don't even seem to want to help their fellow citizen. As a Canadian, I think the entire idea of having to pay to go to the merge absurd.

sure., so long as i knew they were being put to good use.
