I think this was inevitable regardless of performance targets. They over reached when they were making lots of money during the gaming boom brought about from Covid. Rapid expansion alone sees many companies fail.
To top it off, they became formulaic and used Destiny as a minimal effort cash cow to fund other projects. If they would have been happy retaining the Destiny playerbase and profits from the peak then they could have seen better results then they are having now.
I don’t fault them for wanting to try new things but they took for granted their flagship product and its playerbase and for anyone who stopped playing or spending money because of this, then today is a victory for the consumer.
Sony was always going to dissolve Bungie eventually and the studio is only being kept around because it is so closely tied to Destiny which is still making a lot of money.
