Class Niches. Are they really a thing?

Bungie has talked for awhile now about the role each class is supposed to fill. Basically it boils down to this… Titans: Tanky and strong. Able to deal huge amounts of damage and defend against incoming damage. “The wall on which the enemies of The Light fall.” Warlocks: Magic and space stuff. Able to use the powers of The Light to heal and empower allies, and weaken and destroy foes. “Studious and scholarly with many unique abilities and methods to achieve a goal. Warlocks are very powerful with the right tools.” Hunters: Fast and agile. Hunters are able to dodge in and out of combat, leaving their foes in the dust. The first to find new threats to The Light, and often the first to bear the brunt of combat. “With their many jumps and swiftness Hunters can escape and outrun almost anyone.” Except… this isn’t true. While Titans and Warlocks fit into their niches pretty well, Hunter are completely useless in theirs. The entire point to playing a Hunter is to move faster than the other classes, but that just isn’t the case. I was playing on my Hunter recently and was outpaced by a Titan with 43 mobility, even though I had 93 mobility. Sure Hunters have their dodge and on demand invisibility, but they are still missing one key aspect that the Hunters are supposed to be the best in. Speed. Perhaps if Hunter sprint was faster than a Titan or Warlock simply jumping multiple times in a row, things might be different and Hunter might actually be worth playing. In short… if you want to go fast in this game don’t believe the character creation menu. Just pick a Titan or Warlock and have all the crazy abilities with insane speed.

  • I’d much prefer class diversity, but we most definitely stray further from it. Stasis was when I knew they wouldn’t be making them any more defined than they ready weren’t.

Gameplay doesn’t match the “lore”. They talk as though each class fills an RPG archetype role, but they don’t. And at the same time they talk about a subclass’s “identity” they give every subclass the same grenades, and give each of the classes the ability to trigger what was previous class defining abilities for one to all. Making a super that once was area control and a significant debuff now is stronger than even nova bomb. They erode away at the differences between the classes. And any differences they promise never come to be. Remember stasis? Each class was going to be defined by one, either slow, freeze, or shatter. Yet all classes can do all three. Any “role” these classes have seem to be unintentional due to some aspect being an outlier.

    • Hunters don't have to be able to outpace other classes in order to be the "fast and agile" class. They have the most range of movement in the game, they have dives, dodges and now a horizontal flip. Add Bakris in and they have a teleport too. They have a whole arsenal of kit to use for zipping around at close quarters, their jump is really good for immediate air play. The last thing the game needs is faster Hunters, they're plenty fast already. Also, it doesn't matter what stat level Mobility is at, it doesn't affect sprint speed. They likely had a movement exotic that everyone has access to on all subclasses.
