It’s been fun, but this new model ain’t for me

After seeing the wave of paywall after paywall after paywall I can’t bring myself to continue as a consumer for bungie/destiny. I get the anniversary costing 30$ after all it’s the anniversary so naturally bungie would want to bring in some cash. However with the clarification that dungeons are now going to be paywalled separately from seasons and expansions I just can’t support destiny/bungie anymore. It doesn’t help that a sick looking exotic is also going to be locked behind the deluxe edition although that’s not as big a deal. Everyone is saying they don’t mind paying more if the contents better. But I have to ask , how long have we said this just to see content after content being recycled and removed from the game. And the fact that dungeons are now being paywalled outside of the seasonal paywall creates a dangerous precedent. What’s next? Strikes, crucible maps, raids. And if you say that’s fine and that you’re more than willing to cough up 80 dollars all at once when we’ve had these activities tied to seasonal content since forever then more power to you, but this new direction of multiple paywalls ain’t for me. So after this season this guardian is going to hit up the retirement home in the tower and spend the rest of my Days with colonel and the rest of the chickens

  • Bungle’s biggest mistakes since D1Y1… 1. Fighting internal wars between ‘creatives’ vs. ‘Bean counters’ resulting in a major power shift where the ‘Corporates’ won. To pay for that war, Destiny 1 was gutted and stuck together with sticky tape and paper clips. The Exodus of Creatives followed shortly thereafter; which left the Corporate’s supporters promoted beyond their capabilities into lead positions…and we all know how that worked out. 2. In this D2 Beta New World, and beyond - up till the present day, Bungle Corp. has steadfastly alienated its customers - particularly THIS COMMUNITY. Bungle has been caught out many, many times doing things opposite to their ‘promises’ (-blam!- grano Dali’s 🙄)…this was and is, a ‘Management’ (Leadership) issue. Despite a few chairs being moved around, this problem evidently still persists…and still THEY DON’T LISTEN OR LEARN FROM THEIR PAST ERRORS. 👈 3. Tipping Point: there must come a time in all one-sided toxic relationships when the abused party says ‘ENOUGH!’ Where no amount of ‘sweet words’ (empty promises) or minor changes to insignificant stuff, will work as they once did. The greater majority of Guardians are probably Adults / Young Adults who would be horrified to learn how Bungle’s team of psychobabblers and top-notch Marketing team so easily manipulate the player base into doing their (Bungle’s) bidding. This does not include the card-carrying members (😁) of the BDF. Are ‘WE’ there yet? 4. There is a lot right with Destiny - the artwork, the gunplay (when it’s working properly), the worlds created - since removed; the hard work of the non-management workers at Bungle - who are probably also regular Guardians, too; and, therefore, they know exactly where we’re coming from… But…there’s also a lot wrong with Destiny; it’s current and seemingly unchanged D2 Beta & Beyond mission - despite the recent shuffling of deckchairs; to shaft the players at every turn possible, ie, to promise this but do that instead - time after time after time; to maximise the $quee$e wherever possible - it just gets EverWorse; etc…etc. Whenever Bungle has ‘listened’ to US and made a small change to something, the explosion of positive support shown in the Forums is incredible! And WE all hope that finally, at last, the right people are back in charge at Bungie. But, it doesn’t last long…before it’s back to the same ‘ol-same ‘ol again… Lag / shonky architecture / a steam engine that’s falling to bits when a warp engine is badly needed / cheaters / paid carries / stupid levels of grind / low to useless rewards / an absence of fun / removing stuff to sell it back to us a little later / QoL changes requested are completely ignored / and much much more… Are WE there yet? Hmmmm!? 🙄 TLDR: not happening! 🤖 Just my 2d worth. YMMV. Cheers! MDGA 👈😔

      • We know why they are doing this. For the same reason they released the Presage mission early (dialogue in mission was talking about things that didn't happen yet) because it convinced people to buy the season. Too many people pick and choose which seasons to buy, instead of prepaying them for unknown content. So instead of getting $50 or $60 out of someone, they want the full $80. So either you spend $80 on the deluxe, or you spend close to that amount on the seasons you like plus the dungeons since THAT is the content people want. Worse yet, they want to make sure they double-dip into households. My wife and I both play and share DLC. But we can't share seasons, and we wouldn't be able to share dungeons. So instead of including a dungeon in WQ, which would be a single $40 purchase for a couple people in a household, they want to add another paywall for each individual. AND not including the first season of WQ in the DLC, that's another $10 per individual. People are making the argument about value. Sure, make that argument. But don't trash someone that looks at the value and doesn't come to the same conclusion as you. My wife and I can just go Play Monster Hunter World, so the value isn't really there. Maybe it's there for you, and you can skip a $80 night out. I'd rather spend that on my kids.

        • I just love that buying the "Deluxe Edition" costs the same as buying every season and the expansion separately with no bundle discount. They literally pulled the Dungeons out of the season pass offerings just so they could remove the standard bundle discount for buying everything at once. You get nothing extra for buying the Deluxe Edition you wouldn't have gotten otherwise, except now you pay more for it in order to avoid paying even more down the line for Dungeons. Isn't it great? Cut out content that used to come with your purchase to sell it to you separately. It's just like when Apple took the headphone jack out of their phone, then sold you an adapter to get it back that prevented you from charging it at the same time. Thanks. I hate it.

        • My friends are still going with the argument that the value they get out of this game is still more than they would get from a night at the movies with their family. Yes of course, we have all heard that comparison a million times. A “single use” movie doesn’t really compare to a video game imo. But they still argue the point, which is the dollar value of time. I will agree that I have gotten my money’s worth of value from this game. I will most likely get my money’s worth from WC next year. However, there is a wrong way of going about getting that money from us, and Bungie is doing that. I believe that Shadowkeep and all season passes was very close to the cost of a brand new game. I had an issue with that. WC surpasses that cost if you want the dungeons. All the little extras they throw in there do not make up for the extremely high cost. Cosmetics are not enough to blind people to how much they are paying, unless they are children using mommy’s card, or are just out of touch with being taken advantage of. Most of us know how much gaming costs. It’s not cheap. So, we come into this with full expectation that we should have some sort of disposable income to play games. I understand this is a business and their priority is to make money. But this isn’t the way.

        • After a random email from Bungie over 7 years ago asking me to join the Alpha large online test for their new shooter Destiny and playing almost daily since release... I'm ready to abandon the franchise as well. Bungie was different then, they were gamers who cared abut their game. Now it's purely about the money and gameplay is no longer a priority, you pay psychologists to find out what will get people addicted and how to instill fomo. Shame on you Bungie.

            • Any dev who can’t be bothered to update their core game modes(strikes, gambit, crucible) for years while simultaneously focussing on cosmetics can’t be trusted with pay walls. Love destiny, hate the road bungie is taking. It’s that simple.

              • Yeah.. same here.. performance keeps getting worse with every patch.. before this last patch I was getting solid 100+ fps (was 140+ at launch, but ok). After this last patch it's dropping to 60 constantly during PVP (which is way less demanding than pve) I have 2300 hours played on steam alone, but the game performance is utter trash nowadays.... add to that the greedy business model and I'm finally done.. Tbh I'm kinda thankful, it's not easy dropping an addiction, but Bungie sure helped a lot. Cancelling the Deluxe Super Mega Dungeon Plus edition preorder right now.

              • I still like Destiny. Been playing since D1 launch and all I play is crucible. Been like this since the very beginning. I don't mind if they try new revenue methods. I sunk hundreds of hours into the franchise and saved thousands of $ as a result from not buying other games. I have zero problem with the cost of the game and the extras. I often buy expansions without even playing the PvE part. Why? because I like Bungie and the crucible. The moment they remove PVP though (they won't) I'm out. People on these forums that complain about cost are either cheap, broke, or kids. None of these things apply to me.

                • Destiny has been my hobby for the last 7yrs...investing less than 9 euros a month for hundreds of hours of game play is a very good tradeoff imo. Consider that many triple A games only give you 20 to 50 hrs of fun and the cost is very similar...

I agree that it sucks for things to cost more money. At the same time I personally don’t mind paying it because the playtime to dollar ratio for me is still higher than most other things.

                    • So I could be wrong... But isn't buying Deluxe overall cheaper than buying every season individually? Sure, maybe you shouldn't be able to buy them on their own, but if you're readily buying seasons, just go for Deluxe anyway to save some money. If I'm missing something blatantly obvious here, please tell me as I'm not quite sure on all the details.

                        • I don't think you've fully thought this through... Exactly what content did you want to play when Witch Queen came out? - If you just wanted to play the campaign and raid that came out with the yearly expansion, you can buy the $40 version of the DLC, buying exactly what you want to play, nothing more, nothing less. - If you want to play all content over the entire season including seasonal content and all current endgame content, you can buy the $80 deluxe edition of the DLC. This gives you absolutely all content to play over the course of the year. - If you only want to keep up to date with endgame content, you now have a new option, pay for the $40 base version of the DLC plus pay just for each piece of dungeon content. If each dungeon is $20, this means spending $60 instead of $80, meaning you are saving $20 if you only care about raids and dungeons, but couldn't care less about seasonal content. This is actually a net positive to players, but you seem to think it is a reason to quit. My question is why? If you thought the new dungeons would be tied to their respective $10 seasons, why were you buying the season to begin with, was it for the dungeon or the seasonal content. If it was for the dungeon alone, then just buy the dungeon. If you wanted to play both, then I have to ask why you wouldn't want to get the Deluxe edition to begin with. This change isn't additional paywalls, it's offering options to allow people to pay for exactly what they want.

I always saw posts like this and thought, "Get a load of this guy," but honestly... I've been feeling the same exact way. So much had happened in this past year that's just frustrated me with the game. How long since an actual new PvP map came out? One new map is coming in year 5? Deleting so much year 1 and 2 content, and then unvaulting D1 content that we can still play in D1. Seasons are just... idk man I just don't like the seasonal model. There's maybe one thing with each season that's actually worth it. Harbinger, Presage, maybe Expunge, and the Shattered Realms. But most of the main seasonal activities are just dull derivatives of better game modes. Champions are still a thing. An awful, awful addition. Want to create seasonal metas? Why not rely on mods like particle deconstruction? Why force players to use fusion rifles, when you've already created a mod that makes people want to use fusion rifles. Armour synthesis! Oh god, armour synthesis was awful. How anyone could look at it and not see how much of a skeevy system it was is beyond me. Idk what Bungie's budgeting looks like, but if they're not already profiting from selling a yearly expansion, 4 season passes every year, new eververse items every season, new eververse items every event, AND synthweave then idk what to say. Bungie's just another company trying to be your friend while also trying to suck every last cent out of you.

                              • I usually just purchase the deluxe edition for all the included seasons as well. I believe I got Beyond Light for $40 as a preorder. That’s $10 for I believe each season so $40. Then the expansion basically came free. Witch Queen is double that price so it better be literally the best expansion in Destiny history.
