Probably because allowing a user to fully delete their post would remove all the [b]replies[/b] to that deleted post as well, potentially cutting off discussions that develop between other people in that thread.
I feel the fact that users can edit their posts to remove things they’ve said without also removing the responses from others fulfills this need already.
And (not to get too preachy, but) not allowing someone to simply delete a post and [i]all subsequent replies from others[/i] should hopefully help to reinforce the idea that people might take issue with us if we say something stupid/hurtful/false and we should at least [u]try[/u] to be more mindful of what we’ve written before we click on [b]Post[/b] (while allowing for the fact that the board Ninjas can take steps to deal with posts that stray into the realm of straight harassment).
