Why does the community treat new players like garbage?

I met a new player and decided to help him out. This is some 3rd grader. We did the new light missions then I took him I to private matches because we were going to go into control for the new light quest from shaxx. I tried to see what I can do to improve his aim, teach him about awareness, what job each type of weapon has and how they are used, ect. We then decided to go into control after 2 private matches. Out of all 3 matches, he got aggressively tbagged each one. And on the 3rd on, he got a message along the lines of "you cant even play the game. That's why in bagging. Just uninstall". What. The. F***. I don't have words to describe how pissed I was. What the f*** is wrong with this community🤦‍♂️ This all around is just completely messed up. I feel bad for the kid. He was actually having fun with the game. I'm disappointed in this community. We have stooped so low to a point I didnt think we could get to. This is not how new players should be treated. In fact, this ain't how people in general should be treated. How is this acceptable? Edit: Forgot to mention this because I just went to bed after writing this but I had already informed him about crucible not really being fun and it being toxic. When he did get bagged, he told me he was going to bag them back and I said not to. I told him to not stoop to their level. He then told me to go 1v1 them and I said no because I'm not going to that far and waste my time on some bozo with an ego. I never really do 1v1s in the first place because I find it a waste of time unless its with my buddy's for funsies and we do stupid stuff or I'm trying to help a new player like that kid. I already had him block the one who messaged him and told him to ignore people like that because they may feel good about themselves. But in reality, they are making themselves look extreamly stupid and that they have the mental capacity of a zucchini. The kid didnt seem bothered much and was ignoring it which is good, but I can't stand by and let that s*** slide. Especially if I'm the one helping him. Because it's still messed up no matter how you look at it. Edit 2: Some of you are missing the point. Yes, the kid is a 3rd grader. No, I'm not his parent. I didnt give him the ok to play a game at the age he isnt supposed to. And if I had a kid, I most likely wouldn't let them play the game at his age either in the first place, or at least without my supervision. But its 2020 and heading into 2021, people are -blam!-. I'm not angry at the fact that he is a kid experiencing this. I'm angry that new players in general are being treated in a similar manner. I've seen a good chunk of new players on the forums and in the game getting treated like garbage. That's why I'm writing about this.

  • I'm not a new player. But I get this treatment in the crucible a lot because of the campy play style I have to do too even play. I have nerve damage in my hand and after I got covid, it damaged my left eye. But in reality, it honestly messed with my eyesight in general. I usually get messages that are just, whew buddy.. Last one was just the other day and I told the dude I can't help it because of ^^^ and said it's hard for me to even hold my controller at the moment etc etc.. Dude responded with some choice words. Even though I'm 26, not a kid in the 3rd grade. I feel for new players because it feels like Im re-learning how to play this game almost every day and get backlash from the toxic community to boot. It's pretty disheartening.

I'm pretty sure I was a third grader when I was introduced to Halo 2. My friend's older sister's boyfriend brought over his xbox (my family had PS2 and Gamecube). The first thing I saw was an elite in third person jumping over what I think were roofs at the back of the street on Turf, plasma rifle in one hand and brute plasma rifle in the other (the boop-boop-boop-bep was literally the first thing I heard from a Halo game). My neighbors were a few classmates around my age, and some around my older brother's age a few years. So we played Halo 2 a lot (Star Wars Battlefront II even more though), and the older kids had no mercy. We went onto Turf, pushed crates around with melee and grenades to make bases, and then battled it out. I don't think I ever came in first, but I always appreciated playing Halo 2. In grade 7, my friend group expanded because it was a 7-9 jr. high, and me and my friends played Halo 3 nonstop until the CoD WaW, MW2 and Black Ops craze took over halfway through grade 8. My point is, there has always been a culture of pro and inexperienced players, even before modern online gaming. I've only played Fortnite a few times, and I bet if I lfg with strangers over discord, I'd probably be insulted for not being experienced enough to make a wizard tower. The 8-year-old kid might not have had a decent encounter in matchmaking, but as long as he has a friend to play with (which is better than me, my friends are too busy to commit to Destiny), he will probably look back on his experience with a nostalgic lens the same as people in their 20s and 30s today look back on Halo.

    • This community needs more people like you. In my experience, it’s not just newer players unfortunately. I’m not the best, but am probably average or a little above and have been playing since D1, and I still get the occasional hate message.

You think this game is toxic now? Try being denied access to raids in Y1 D1 because you didn't have Gjallarhorn and after DB, Black Hammer. I was lucky to get both early on, but since Xur didn't sell Gjhorn again until Y2 ROI I think, your chances of being let into a group was pretty low without them. And in response to this "necessity", bungie nerfed Gjhorn a lot, I think the reason was the same for BH. How about Overwatch? I'm sure you've heard of people being banned for choosing "throw characters" which while throwing the match is a punishable offense, choosing a character is not, especially if that person actually puts in work like gold kills/ objective kills/ healing, objective time, you get the idea. Imagine being banned because you're being falsely reported for choosing a builder or a sniper instead of anything else.

1.i have never heard from a one single person treat a new person like shit as a matter of fact ive ONLY heard of stories of how helpful and kind the community is 2. if they are mean, rude and unhelpful it is because we know they'll get immersed into this game world which seems like an ocean at first glance but is infact pond deep and 3: some new people i come across are entitled to my time freely helping them despite me still being really nice about it

        • Hate to say it but that’s not just this game. That’s online gaming in general. You have pockets of nice people but the rest are like that. Hate to say it but even if he’s in third grade he needs to learn to get the -blam!- over it and put on some big boy pants if he’s going to play a T game online. I really can’t feel bad for him. That happens to everyone

        • Why didn't you teach the kid about blocking/muting? Cool that you took him under your wing, if not unusually committed, but you're not gonna cure the planet of jerks. Use the tools you have and/or tell people to use them. Don't write an essay because the trolls aren't gonna read it. He respects you, he listens to you: Tell him to control his interactions. Block. Mute. Ignore tea bags. It will do more help than this.

          • It’s no surprise to me. This is how people are in ALL games in today’s society. People will just be nasty to ANYONE they want just to get a reaction. ANY reaction. People aren’t like the way they used to be like in destiny 1. Elitism has taken over. More people expect you to pay them to do difficult activities then in destiny 1 (aka recoveries in both raids and trials especially). People are FAR MORE competitive then before. Free to play is considered by most to be the biggest mistake bungie made for destiny, as 1. It brought newcomers incapable of playing high end game content (raids, trials) who many remaining veterans believe they expect to be carried in it. As a result, posts require specific amount of clears, weapons and k/d to be even able to join. Endgame content is pretty much not available to newcomers. And with more and more sherpa’s and veterans leaving destiny in droves, it’s becoming far more difficult for any newcomer to play endgame. 2. Free to play gave bungie the opportunity to stock eververse with more items then mostly everything else in the game. The cash shop preys on free to play players with cosmetic micro transactions. Many free to play players buy a large set of cosmetics. Even if they are unsatisfied with the game and leave, they more then likely already spent a good amount of cash on eververse. This cycle continues as free to play players come and go endlessly, lining bungies pockets. 3. Newcomers have a major disadvantage in game. They have little idea what to do. What stats on armor to focus on in game, what weapons they should be running, what they should do at each encounter, etc. Without this info, they have no idea what to do. People will look at that player and wonder why they’re trying. Destiny, for all intensive purposes, is ABSOLUTELY NOT simple. When someone screws up at ANY POINT (especially in pvp), your going to be judged, harshly. This is a byproduct of today’s society in the real world and the currant MAJOR issues that currently plague it. People have generally become meaner and cruel in today’s society from both the physical problems and psychological problems NOT ONLY with COVID, but also with the general instability of the world with its currant major issues and its governing factions (this is not a political debate. Please don’t start one here... Thank you). People are PISSED everywhere, and what do people typically do when their pissed? They try to extend that onto others... This is just the sad truth. Things aren’t going to get better for ANY newcomers. It’s only going to continue to go downhill and people are going to continue to get more cruel and more nasty to others.
