I figure it might help if we all post the details of our experiences with the WATERCRESS error here, to perhaps help Bungie find commonalities and find a way to fix it.

For me, it started with NEWT errors three weeks ago. For a week, I could only do one thing at a time – go to one planet or go to the Tower, complete one strike or one lost sector, or one crucible match etc – before I got a black screen for several minutes followed by a NEWT error and then a full game crash with a ‘rrrrrrrrrrr’ noise. The only solution was to quit the game and spend around 8-10 minutes logging back in, at which point I could usually complete one more activity before NEWT and a crash. It was really frustrating - one evening it took me 4 hours to complete 4 legendary lost sectors due to the crashing, but at least I could play a bit.

Then the new update happened just under 2 weeks ago, and since then I haven’t been able to log in at all.

I launch the game, press ‘A’ and after a few minutes of grey screens get to the character choice screen. I pick a character - it doesn’t matter which one - and then get a plain black screen for 4-5 minutes. Eventually, I get a WATERCRESS error screen.

If I press ‘B’ to dismiss it quickly enough, it goes back to the Shadowkeep screen and I can press ‘A’, at which point the game freezes with a ‘rrrrrrrrrrrrrr’ sound.

If I leave the WATERCRESS error on screen for a few seconds, the whole thing just freezes up and I have to quit.

The only exception to this was 4 days ago - to my surprise, on my daily attempt to log in, I picked a character and after 15 seconds or so of black screen, it actually logged me in. Oh joy! I thought perhaps Bungie had fixed it. I went to the Tower - it worked! I bought some bounties from Banshee. I purchased the cat emote from Eververse for silver (really wanted that, so I’m glad I had the opportunity to get it). Then I tried to travel to the EDZ and that’s when it all fell over again. I got NEWT - full game crash with ‘rrrrrrrr’ noise - and when I tried to launch and log in again, WATERCRESS.

I tried everything I could at this end to try and fix it:
- Unplug router, wait 5 mins, plug back in
- Reset Xbox
- Hard reset Xbox
- Clear alternate MAC address
- Run all Xbox tests of network, multiplayer etc
- Call ISP, get them to reset router
- Call ISP to check through my whole network, confirmed no issues here
- Delete and reinstall game (the nuclear option)

Nothing worked.

FYI I’m on Xbox One with 200MB/s wired connection. I’m NOT on Free 2 Play (purchased full Deluxe game via Microsoft Store), and I DO have the full annual season pass.

I’m now on Day 13 of WATERCRESS errors and being unable to play. I usually play every single day for a minimum of 2-3 hours with my friends - it’s the only game I play, so I’m really feeling it. Just really, really hoping Bungie can fix this soon so that lockdown doesn’t seem so interminable. I’m hoping this thread will help.

So please reply with as much detail as possible around your WATERCRESS experiences, what you’ve done to try and fix it, anything that might have helped, etc. Maybe it will help Bungie track it down. Maybe it won’t, but heck, it’s worth a try.

1 ReplyIts 22 April 2020 and I'm having the exact same issue since the guardian games (update 2.8.1 I think) dropped. 1 strike or 1 planet and freeze or crash with the watercress or newt error then it won't let me log back in at all. I've reset my modem and Xbox so far nothing. Any info or update to fix this is appreciated.

You explained the exact same things I am experiencing on XBOX with season pass and all bells/whistles to include all of the exact same troubleshooting from recycle, ISP check to uninstall/reinstall on a wired connection. Has been going on for 3 weeks. Cannot progress in storyline I paid for.

Started 3 weeks ago for me. Have had a great playing experience yet. Usually IF I am able to get on, I run one activity before I start the loop of loading the game and quitting out of it due to the Watercress Error. I only get NEWT once I have completed an activity and attempt to start another one.

I have exactly the same problem as darkside since Thursday (3rd April) and have followed the exact same procedures as him in trying to resolve this I have also asked my internet provider for advice who kindly replaced my router (which did not need replacing) but to no avail This whole episode has left me very deflated as i have been playing destiny from the very beginning (6 years +) The game has had many problems over this time but this is by far the worse it has been... The issues would appear to be heightened when a new dlc is introduced and unfortunately the response to them is at best is very poor It is a real shame that the perception is the YouTuber’s and fanboys seem to have the ears of the hierarchy at Bungie whereas the casual playing minions like myself matter not with regards to resolving the many problems that exist with D2 Might i suggest that you forget about adding new content and concentrate on making destiny the enjoyable experience we have always wished for it to be by fixing all other issues that plagued the game from the beginning.

Mine kind of the same thing it started happenin when xbox had a core issue went to bed woke up the next day signd in then the started getting the watercress error for 2 and half week and can sometimes get on and travel to a planet but can't travel anywhere else i get the newt error code then can't sign in at all i love playin the game even with all its issues just kind takes the biscuit i can't on to play

2 RepliesSo my girlfriend has not been able to login to her character for 4 days now... she selects her character and gets a black screen for 5 minutes and BAM watercress. Bungie needs to figure this out or at least acknowledge the issue and they are working on it. This game is all that me and my girlfriend play and we are so frustrated that we are about to quit. My xbox works fine, hers does not. It happened all of the sudden. Before that we never had any issues. I've tried to fix so far by resetting her xbox Resetting router Power cycling router Calling ISP Reinstalling game Changing firewall settings Opening nat Syncing nats so both xbox's are the same. Setting up static IP addresses for our xbox ones. Wired connection Wireless connection Setting up approved applications through firewall. Port forwarding through different ports And every other miscellaneous thing I can try!!!! It has now led me to believe it's on bungie's side. I dont know what else I can do. Been spending countless hours trying to fix this.

Unfortunately, there is nothing we can resolve until we figure out what's going on. We're investigating this issue every day and have made some small gains, but it's not something we're happy with and we hope to make improvements as soon as we are able to. 3 RepliesI've had the exact same experience with a small exception. This first happened to me almost 3 weeks ago. Xbox live was having some issues when I first got a newt error so I put it down to that. Over the next few days I started to notice a rise in newt errors till eventually I started to get kicked from everything I tried to do. Then watercress started and I couldn't get past character select. At that point I contacted bungie and 24 hours later I got a message from them saying they had identified the problem and it was now fixed. So I went back on and sure enough I had no issues for the next two weeks. 5 days ago it started again and haven't been able to load past character select since. I've followed all the instructions on the bungie help page like yourself, reset router, hard reset, uninstalled and reinstalled. I even factory reset my xbox. I have two xbox ones in my house and it's the same story on both. My son plays Destiny as well and his account loaded up just fine so I finally realised it wasn't a problem with the console. That's where I'm at now. Can't play and my clan is getting further and further ahead of me. I was trying to get to a point where I can do grand master ordeals when they drop but right now I don't even know if the game will be fixed by then. I done reset my modem a 100 times and replaced it too just in case that was the problem but it was not the problem at all.everytime i load up the game i get to the character screen i select my guardian and get a black screen for 4 to 5 minutes then i get the famous watercress code or whatever it is.i have tryed everything on my end that i can possible do.i think all this time we missed is money and time loss we should get something out of this when we finally are able to play and bungie not talking about a emotes either

Since the moons bunker was added I have been having the same issues. Roughly 2 to 3 weeks. I load up the game. Wait a bit to select a character Choose the 1 character I actually play. Wait a bit. Watercress Try again Game freezes up and quits to dashboard. Rinse and repeat until that rare case when you can actually play for a few minutes just fine. I've tried Daily to log in and nothing. I've been a d1 beta guy. Didn't register my account to bungie. Net as in my own defence. I is pleb. I don't want my guardian to be lost to the darkness because of a error. Like the thing is its nothing to do with connection. I've been playing multiple online only games and tested my connection and it's perfectly fine. So after I hit the 2 week mark this morning... No joke I am losing my patience a bit and losing faith in bungie. I have been playing their games since Halo CE and know what they can do and that they listen to the fans. Want a good example? CE. Magnum was OP 2. Magnum was nerfed hard and duel welding whilst awesome ruined the needler. 3. Needler got buffed a d duel welding was toned down a bit. Halo 3 ODST. Magnum returns as a suppresses but great halo 2 version. I genuinely hope bungie fixes this issue soon as we are missing out on powerful gear and bunker farming. We are mission out on certain limited time stuff and we have fallen behind on everything I don't usually say this but I think they should give out to all of the people effected the amount of warning bits you'd normally get in that time frame and powerful gear up to a few levels higher than your current gear to help people catch up. But that's not going to happen.

It does suck that this happens when Coronavirus is going around but this needs to be fixed immediately and have a solution for people who are missing out on the season.
