You do have to do a background check when purchasing a firearm. The problem is on certain groups not properly notifying the the FBI. I.E. The navy dude that was dishonorably discharged for something that should have disallowed him from purchasing a gun, but the navy dropped the ball and people died. Can't remember the name now, its been too long.
