His designation of the Amish as a cult strikes me as slanderous. I can't help but imagine what it would sound like if you were to take his arguments and apply them to any number of indigenous or "undeveloped" people around the world. Just because they live in the United States and because they descended from immigrants does not suddenly make it immoral for them to live in an isolated fashion. What's more, complaining about how they attempt to maintain their simple and isolated lifestyle by not embedding themselves in the legal mechanisms of the United States strikes me as the view of someone who has very insular thinking.
