Add complexity to Destiny

The thing lacking in destiny, more than anything else for me, is complexity. I’ll start with the most common, skill tree—man oh man I miss the skill tree!! I missed debating about the best character builds and set ups for different events, I miss having control over how my character plays. Bring it back, and bring it back with numbers—numbers showing us exactly what each selection does (increases grenade recharge by 10% on melee kills for example) Next I think weapons could be done differently...what if we had to option to “build” all of the guns we used? Right now we have mods that do various things, but what if we had more control? It would be cool to have weapon parts that we could use interchangeably. I take my tigerspite, and I buy a new barrel from Banshee and it increases my range. We could have different rarities of these parts, each giving different level boosts, and legendary and exotics giving extra perks (this is how we would get outlaw and firefly etc.) Same as the above with Armor—but, more importantly, what this would add is a solution to not being able to pull weapons/armor out of collections. Now all weapons/armor start with the same base stats of, pretty much nothing. Now we have to grind for parts to improve and level up our weapons and armor, giving us more control. Speeder...I mean sparrows. No one wants a spee...sparrow that reloads your weapons!! Give us control here, give us a sparrows that’s are slow and make us work to make them fast if we love how they look. I know nothing about game design or about the amount of work that would go into this, but I...I dunno, just figured I’d share my thoughts.

  • Really like the idea of weapon attachments, and having rarities for them. It could give Banshee a larger daily rotating inventory instead of just 2 mods a day.

Complexity, for complexity sake, is not an improvement. I say this because I saw it in Game of War: Fire Age. It was a total BS game that was needlessly complex. Now if you are talking depth, then that's a different story. Depth is what D2 needs. Crafting is an terrific idea, but it won't happen because of PvP. PvP ruins the loots based aspect of the game and holds it back. Just look at the One Eyed Mask. One of the few exotics that even surpasses the best of what D1 offered. Look at what happens, the idiots in PvP demand it be nerfed. This why we can't have nice things in D2.

        • The problem with complexity is that most people have a life. (That doesn't revolve around a game.)

          • On the sparrow section, I think it would be cool if there was more to do with sparrows. Currently, having anything below 160 speed is a complete waste even if it looks cool. There's so much potential for vehicles in the game, especially sparrows if they were moddable. Have a mod that makes it extend foldable wings when jumping so it can glide. A mod that gives it the ability to jump. A mod that increases its durability. A mod that gives a sort of "energy plow" at the front when boosting, making it easier to run over enemies(like that pike baron in the tangled shore storyline.) A mod that gives it armament, or allows the player to shoot from it or drop grenades behind it. Cosmetically, being able to change their rocket exhaust shape and color, and having multiple ornaments for them that apply decals and different paint jobs(mostly oriented towards exotics, as most legendary sparrows are the same as others but in different paint schemes.) Jumpships could also have some different perks. Imagine being able to call in your jumpship to strafe an area. Some would use a narrow line of gatling cannon burst fire like an A-10, others could drop a bomb like a Ju-87, some would fire missiles that guide onto a laser pointer. Some could have very weird effects like warping opponents up in the air and killing them with fall damage, or burning them with napalm. Some jumpships could also be more support rather than offensive, dropping ammo or defensive barricades in an otherwise tricky spot. Maybe even drop a Rasputin Valkyrie for the player to use. Of course, these would only work in areas with a visible sky; calling in jumpship support inside the pyramidion, for example, would be a little odd. World vehicles could also use a bit of love. Currently, the only one really worth driving is an interceptor, and only the fast-firing long-boosting ones at that(the ones in the EDZ suck.) Putting a Drake Tank, or even a drivable cabal tank, on a couple maps for causing chaos out in the world would be pretty dope.

            • This would never work as long as PvP and PvE are interlinked. Bungie can barely balance the crucible now. Please, for the love of all that is holy, separate the 2. I would love to have control over the game as you described.

              • Sounds like you want a full fledged rpg, which destiny is not. Destiny is a shooter, first and foremost.

                • Depth > Complexity. It's often said, and true at that. However they are also confused for one another. In short it's better to get everything you can out of a small set of features. Rather than layering them on, or dividing one up into smaller parts, to then say you have a bigger number of them. What is already there needs to actually be tied together well. Elements, vehicles, and pick up weapons are but a few things already in the game but underused. Other things include enemy combat behavior which is all nearly the same. Prolonging the grind is not a solution to the game's uninteresting features. Distracting surely, that much I can agree with, but you are left with the same problem by the end of it.

I like the idea of more options, but you are giving too much credit to the d1 skill options. We really only had a couple of good builds available with most people ignoring the majority of the choices. Yes choices are better then a dedicated build. I just hope in D3 they expand the choices, and make them interact with each other more. One thing I would like to see is damage type meaning more then what gets a burn, and taking out shields. Give solar guns a small burn, arc should be able to stun or chain a portion of the damage, void should slow, and kinetic should have increased damage and stagger. This would also make kinetic a damage choice, not just something you have to use in the top slot. I would also like to se stats brought back. If you want to tank you focus on hp, resistance, and shields. You could survive an onslaught, but be slow and not as damaging as a build built around agility, dexterity, and luck.

                    • If the old skill tree were to ever come back, then they’d have to make every individual skill viable, or else we’ll have the same thing that was in D1, everyone using the most optimal builds while the rest of the skills are never used.

                      • Ngl I would love too see a proper weapon crafting system in the game and a proper weapons modification bench. Like we go up to the station with say like a scout rifle. We can choose what type of frame it has, what rate of fire, type of sites, muzzle attachments mag size etc etc but then also have the ability to recalibrate the weapon perks like in the division. If we wanted to add an even further level of optimisation we could have different scopes role different stats I would also love a return of strength, intellect and discipline because I loved optimising those stats in destiny 1. Skill trees need to return I’d like too see ship combat and more vehicle based combat (they proved them can do space combat in The Long Night of Solace in reach) I’d also like the option of a player home that you could customise, either a flat inside the tower or in your ship or something. Like you could have armour stands and weapon stands that you could display stuff on(even if you were still using it there could be like an option to display current load out) and like different achievements could earn different rewards/ relics that you could display. Like idk by killing Crota in D1 you could have the sword on display or you could have the aegis (shield) from the Vog on your wall or something idk I’d also like to see player trading, using silver or something( a bit like warframes plat system) I think all these features would be great

                        • I still don’t get the love for the old skill tress... If you ignore all the Jumps/Grenades/Stats your only left with like 9 total choices. Amoung those options there were clearly superior perks then only got used or there were perks that synergized with each other which is pretty much what we have now. More options is better yes but I wouldn’t say D1 skilltree was any better then D2’s

                          • You know its funny. Whenever a complex element is added players demand its changed, "its to hard" they say, "casual players cant enjoy it" posts like these flood the forums. Then, as soon as theyre changed "no one asked for these changes" and "we want more complex challanging content, not less!" So i wonder why we are in this limbo, hmm...

They dropped the ball. The ARMORY should have been for this exact grind. Making the forge relevant throughout the series by crafting your own weapons via grind and such. Thus your 'pinnacle weapon' for this activity would be something of your creation and works with your playstyle. It would really be a 'black tier' weapon because YOU built it. They could have maybe 20 or so unique perks to that the BA weapon type, all balanced enough where the pairings and player makes it competitive. Not the weapon meta. And EXCLUSIVE to Black Armory and crafted weapons. You'd break down enough of a weapon type of a certain vendor or do something for the gunsmith to get a schematic that you then take to Ada where your quest begins. Idk. And for those who love the random roll grind? They can still have it! Want fixed rolls? The vendors on planets got those too for your boy. Variety! Participating in SRL would give you parts and such to pimp your ride by going to your girl, whose name escapes me but exotics sparrows still rule as well as the normal ones you can get. And DO SOMETHING WITH THE DAMN FARM! One of the best social spaces and its collecting dust. Personally I like the D2 skill tree. They did Sentinels top tree right. I'd love unbreakable but meh. I can deal.

                          • I have been thinking about this for a long time. I am glad someone made a post, so I can just piggyback off. My idea with the weapons/armor is blueprints/schematics. We get weapon parts to construct the weapons based on schematics. Schematics will be rng, to give us a reason to grind. Same with gathering parts. Weapon add-ons will also be rng schematics, requiring parts. Maybe require planetary materials. Would be somewhat similar to Fallout/Elder Scrolls/etc. But it would give us a huge amount of customization and control over OUR characters. This would also be great for armor, so that we can more easily have matching armor pieces. Right now many people just pick whatever armor has the perks they want. They then try to hide the horribleness by applying the same shader to each piece. On the topic of shaders, we get the recipe of the shader. Then we have it always. Then we collect base dyes/paints/whatever. We use those with the recipe to create and apply shaders. This all means that we can shrink vault space by expanding collections. Instead of storing 500+ pieces of gear, each one with a half dozen unique variables, we now have a simple yes/no checklist for each player. The problem then comes down to the desired grind Bungie has for this game. How do we keep players coming back for more and more? Obviously the rigid, non-generous rng we currently have doesn't make many players happy. Though that seems to be mainly with cosmetics. Still, many players give up on the grind because it is like playing the lottery. You are very likely not going to win, so why play? But on the other hand, making a generous rng will kill the grind just as quick. Got everything I need, well no more goals to reach, time to stop playing. So should, say appended mag schematic, be unlocked for all guns once you get it. Or should you need to get that schematic for each weapon? Maybe just each weapon type, e.g. pulse rifle appended mag. What should be the drop rates for such a thing? Should such a thing drop from specific known sources so that the player can grind for the specific schematics they want? How do exotics fall within this? Would we still have the chance of curated rolls?

This is a really great idea dude!!! The sparrow thing I think is cool and the weapon thing... however idk about the weapon thing it’s just a meh for me. It’s basicallt sacrificing random rolls like d2 did... sure you can customize everything on the weapon you get however I’m wondering if I rather just have random rolls? I love grinding out for a random weapon roll but with your system I’d be grinding for weapon scopes extended mags, range buffs silencers etc.. which is interesting in concept but idk man maybe both would be cool? Either way bungie would just do one of these. Edit: on the skill tree thing. I think skill trees should go fully into depth in d3. I want to customize my glide/jump abilities. We have had the same double jumps for 6 years now! Change something about them. Make warlocks be able to double jump like hunters. Idk. All grenades should be available for all classes. If your a storm caller you get spike grenades or skip grenades. But even more than that. Add more grenades! Add more melee effects and options. Make me spend hours trying to find a specific set up that goes with my super abilities. Anthem does this perfectly. Yeah most of the game is bad. But you can spend hours just in the ability section thinking of a set up to go along with your ultimate or weapons. I want something like this.
