A lightsaber crystal was one of a variety of crystals, gems, stones, or other objects used as the focus of a lightsaber.
At the heart of every lightsaber was a set of crystals that resonated to produce the efficient, powerful blade. While the most common crystals used in the process were from the Adega system, Ilum, and Dantooine (in the so-called Crystal Cave), Jedi and Sith used a variety of crystals to produce various colors, effects and unique abilities. Some crystals could even enhance the Force skills of a particular user. Other gems, such as colored crystals or diamonds, were used exclusively for prismatic effects. However, not all lightsaber crystals were actually crystals. Plenty of Jedi or Sith used a different material or substance in place of a crystal, such as physical remains, shards of glass, and even special micro machinery.
During the Great Sith War epoch, many lightsabers were created using Kunda stones, a natural geologic formation from the planet Kadril, in place of crystals. These stones boasted numerous practical applications in medicine and communications; however, when added to other focusing crystals, they produced a broader beam.

A Jedi constructs his lightsaber during the Galactic Civil War.
Before placing the crystal in the lightsaber, the Jedi or Sith had to imbue it with the Force. To do this, the Force-user was required to meditate on the crystal for many days. Luke Skywalker meditated on his crystal in Ben Kenobi's home with only R2-D2 to keep him company.[1]
While the Jedi used natural crystals, the Sith mostly used red-hued synthetic crystals. Sith-made synthetic crystals created a slightly more powerful blade when energized by the dark side of the Force. Sith lightsaber blades could occasionally "break" the blade of a Jedi saber. Darth Sidious had Darth Maul use a special furnace to make his own crystals. Maul worked constantly for several days to make the four crystals needed for his double-bladed lightsaber. Their creation required intense concentration, as Darth Maul had to use the Force not only to make them the proper shape and to ensure that the crystals were free from impurities, but also to keep himself alive for the long time it took in the blistering heat of the furnace. Maul was particularly proud of this achievement and believed it to be an example of the Sith's superiority over the Jedi. However, Sidious did not make his subsequent apprentices—Tyranus and Vader—create their crystals in such a manner, instead supplying them himself.[2][3]
Luke Skywalker, who had decided to create his lightsaber crystal instead of using a natural one, also used a special furnace he found in Obi-Wan Kenobi's home to prepare his crystal.[1] As exemplified in both Skywalker and Maul's cases, the creator of a synthetic crystal channeled his Force energies and personality into the crystal as it was formed, making it unique in every way, including the color.
The Jedi Order had an advanced technique that allowed, in case of need, the cleaning of synthetic crystals made by dark-side users from the hate of their former owners. In 41 ABY, Jaden Korr, who had lost his lightsaber, used the Force to banish the dark side from the red crystal of a Dark Jedi he had killed. Through meditation, he was able to remove all traces of the dark side and imbue the crystal with the light side, turning the Dark Jedi's lightsaber into a yellow-bladed Jedi weapon.
Significance of colors
Around 4000 BBY, lightsaber crystals were used to indicate a Jedi's chosen class. Blue indicated a Jedi Guardian, a Jedi who used the Force on a more physical level. Green indicated a Jedi Consular, a Jedi who preferred to reflect on the mysteries of the Force and fight the dark side at its heart. Yellow indicated a Jedi Sentinel, a Jedi who honed his or her skills in a balance of combat and scholarly pursuits.
This distinction fell out of practice in later years, when most Jedi used blue or green crystals from Ilum caves based on personal choice, and then the use of crystals coming from various source worlds became marginal. Purple, yellow, and orange crystals were still used by some Jedi until the fall of the Jedi Order, but they were exceedingly rare, and often passed down through generations.[source?] During the Galactic Civil War, the Galactic Empire banned trade and possession of all lightsaber crystals.[source?] No longer having Ilum crystals at their disposal, Jedi of the New Jedi Order settled for the use of various crystals and gems, creating lightsaber blades of multiple colors.
The synthetic crystals, favored by users of the dark side for their offensive properties, were filled with the negative energies of their creators, which gave to the crystals their red color; the majority of the Sith and Dark Jedi wielded crimson-bladed lightsabers, though colors similar in hue to red, such as orange and magenta, were not unheard of.
Known lightsaber crystalsEdit
"One of the other crucial pieces is a focusing crystal. The most powerful and sought-after gems are rare Kaiburr crystals. However, though lightsabers are powerful weapons, their design is so flexible that practically any kind of crystal can be used."
―Luke Skywalker to his students on making a lightsaber[src]
There were a number of different stones, minerals, and crystals that could be used in the construction of a lightsaber. Some jewels created different colors and effects in the lightsabers in which they were placed. Often, the rarer the crystal, the more powerful its effects on a lightsaber.[4]

For millennia, the Jedi Order lit lightsabers in every color and hue imaginable. However, following the Battle of Ruusan, the hues of most available crystals had been limited to either blue or green. Lightsaber color crystals could also be compressed, resulting in a pulsating blade, or they could be unstable, resulting in a core which swirled and sparkled.
Lightsaber crystals of different hues could also be used in the same lightsaber to make a new blade color; for example, Galen Marek used Rahm Kota's green crystal along with his father's blue crystal to create an aqua blade.
The following is a list of all known blade colors.

"We had the Battle of Gormen won, until the AT-ATs arrived. They came out of the fog and ripped apart the front lines. The locals ran in terror, but the experienced soldiers surrendered. We knew that you can't outrun an AT-AT." ―Major Bren Derlin, Rebel Alliance field commander[src] The All Terrain Armored Transport (AT-AT) walker, also known as the Imperial Walker, was a major part of the Galactic Empire's motor-pool. Carrying a vast amount of fire power and being heavily armored, the AT-AT was argueably the most feared and effective land vehicle in the Imperial Army, and enjoyed a long life span, from the Clone Wars to the Second Imperial Civil War, over 150 years later. However, it was also known for its relatively slow speed. Contents[show] Description "Lookit 'em, boss! Great, big, fat gray targets!" "I know, Zev, but they've got a long reach." ―Zev Senesca and Luke Skywalker, during the Battle of Hoth[src] AT-AT egvv AT-AT schematics. The AT-AT walker was a behemoth of a war machine, standing at a height of 22.5 meters.[7] The quadrupedal walker closely resembled ancient beasts of war,[5] or even a giant legendary beast from the dark side of the Force.[17] Designed for the dual purpose of crushing and demoralizing enemy forces, and also serving as a transport for Imperial troops and light vehicles, the AT-AT was among the most astonishing vehicles in the Imperial Army's inventory.[5] Hundreds of these walkers were produced during the Galactic Civil War,[8] and its intimidating and powerful presence often earned it the distinction of being the first vehicle into a combat zone.[9] Serving as the "head" of the mechanical walker was a movable command section containing the command cockpit, with room for the commander, pilot and gunner. The command section housed all of the AT-AT's weapon systems, as well as holographic targeting systems allowing the gunners a 360-degree view of their position.[5] The cockpit was also equipped with a holoprojector for purposes of external communication. Forward visualization was supplied by a glowing red command viewport.[18] The head could rotate as much as ninety degrees right or left and thirty degrees up or down for an expansive field of fire. Positioned above and below the command section was the walker's sensor array and blaster cannon energizer, respectively.[5] ATATpilot-DB An AT-AT pilot. The command head was attached to the trapezoidal armed body section by a flexible armored tunnel, allowing cockpit access from the rest of the machine. The AT-AT's troop section could typically carry five speeder bikes, up to forty troops normally comprising Imperial stormtroopers or Imperial land assault troopers[5] in a double-tiered passenger section, and heavy weaponry, such as E-Web heavy repeating blasters.[9] The AT-AT could also variably hold two All Terrain Scout Transports in lieu of soldiers in a rear vehicle bay,[5] though they required partial disassembly to fit inside.[19] Housing the troop section were two large side panels; each one held an escape hatch. The rear panel also housed the troop staging area. Positioned in the center of the body section was a rectangular boarding hatch with sliding ramps where the AT-AT's complement of troops loaded and disembarked. An AT-AT unloaded its troops by kneeling to three meters above ground level until the boarding ramp could extend outward.[5] Individual stormtroopers could also be deployed rapidly by rappelling cable.[3] An AT-AT walker deployed to the moon Yavin 8 carried a distress beacon which was launched aboard a missile.[20] Below the troop body section were two immense Kuat Drive Yards FW62 compact fusion drive systems that,[3] in conjunction with the walker's four giant heavily-reinforced legs, propelled the AT-AT forward at a top speed of sixty kilometers per hour. However, this maximum rate was achievable only on flat, stable terrain. At the rear of, and connected to, the drive motors were the walker's three fuel slug tanks that powered the massive machine. The AT-AT's rear also included atmospheric exchangers and a filtration unit to regulate the interior living conditions.[5] The walker's legs were supported by massive durasteel footpads with impulse terrain sensors,[9] supplemented by toe flaps, that could crush obstacles in its path with little effort, effectively helping the AT-AT to live up to its name.[5] The legs did, however, require constant maintenance and repair.[19] As the titanic walker marched down the battlefield, its heavy, stomping feet would cause the ground to shake, demoralizing the enemy before they were even engaged.[17] AT-AT barrage by Barger An AT-AT affirming its firepower in combat The AT-AT's formidable offensive capabilities were supplied by dual, chin-mounted Taim & Bak MS-1 fire-linked heavy laser cannons (for slower, more cumbersome targets) and two fire-linked medium repeating blasters mounted on each side of the head (designed for lighter, agile targets).[3][5] The two sets of weapons could be independently rotated in order to engage multiple targets at once.[5] However, the AT-AT's head, which could move between a range of left, center and right firing arcs, could only rotate one fire arc per heavy laser volley.[4] The walker's strong external 9095-T8511 grade durasteel armor was virtually impervious to all but the heaviest of artillery weapons.[9][17] The most vulnerable part of the walker was its flexible neck, which was susceptible to lighter blaster barrages. If punctured, it can lead to a reactor breach, although it was considered an unlikely scenario, it nonetheless was considered potentially catastrophic.[21] The legs were also somewhat unstable and could be tripped[4] due to a high center of gravity,[22] leaving the walker defenseless.[4] In addition, when tripped, AT-ATs do not regain footing easily, and they are also vulnerable to crumbling terrain. Damaging its knee joints can lead to loss of mobility, being less sound than the other parts of the leg due to their representing the flexible joining of two components, with the joints being vulnerable to artillery attacks.[21] While first appearing to be a slow, lumbering vehicle, the AT-AT would often be on top of its enemies before they knew what had hit them.[5] The AT-AT also lacked armor covering on its underbelly, leaving the spot vulnerable to mounted guns or portable missile launchers. To remedy this weakness, AT-STs were usually stationed around the walker's flanks to ensure nothing was given a clear shot at the AT-AT's weak underside.[17] The walker could also be disabled with shots to the knee joint.[20] In addition, they also lacked rear facing weaponry, and while sufficiently armored, their primary purpose nonetheless was to act as troop transports, and thus have comparatively lighter armaments compared to other mainstay walkers in the Imperial Army. In order to compensate for these glaring blind spots, the AT-ATs are often deployed in staggering formations, as well as accompanied by support vehicles.[21] AT-ATs were typically deployed for ground assault from orbit by large dropships. Walkers stationed within larger warships, such as the Executor-class Star Dreadnought, were delivered to planetary surfaces within Incom Y-85 Titan dropships, capable of carrying four AT-ATs.[7] Smaller starships, such as the Imperial-class Star Destroyer, deployed single walkers via the Theta-class AT-AT barge.[23][7] Other designs, including the Telgorn Corporation Warlord Dropship, were capable of delivering a armor platoon of four walkers.[24] Modified variants The Empire utilized several modified variants of the standard AT-AT design for purposes of fitting certain mission profiles in specific environments. The walkers used at the Battle of Hoth in 3 ABY—nicknamed "snow walkers"—were specially designed with heat circulation systems, de-icing controls, and energy efficient environmental controls.[4][19] The AT-AT "dune walker" was a desert terrain walker fitted with Sienar Fleet Systems z23 heat dissipation units[8]; while the Aquatic Terrain Armored Transport, known as the AT-AT "swimmer," was a repulsorcraft cousin of the standard model.[19] There was also the All Terrain Ion Cannon, a long-range artillery gun mounted on an AT-AT chassis.[25] Various planetary garrisons often modified their AT-ATs to suit the local environments, with various modifications including gas filters, heat recirculators, and anti-corrosive sheens. The Aquatic Terrain Armored Transport, also known as the AT-AT Swimmer, was an extreme modification created by the Imperial Army garrison for use on Kabaira.[21] History Clone Wars origin and development AT-AT Jabiim First-generation AT-ATs fight in the Battle of Jabiim. The cargo compartment would be rounded out in future designs. AT-ATs were first designed and assembled by Kuat Drive Yards during the Clone Wars. They were evolved from the AT-TE walkers first employed in the Battle of Geonosis,[3] as well as the AT-PT.[5] The first-generation AT-AT walkers saw their debut during the Battle of Jabiim, later on in the Clone Wars. During this battle, the overwhelmed Confederacy forces were annihilated by them. Their significance waned when the walkers were slowed down by the muddy surface of the planet, making it easier for the enemy units to bring them down.[11] At some point, AT-AT walkers managed to fall into the hands of the CIS, with at least one unit being kept in a research facility on the Separatist world of Diado.[26] During the Wars, wheeled tanks like the A5 and A6 Juggernauts were preferred over both the AT-AT and the AT-HE, due to the decreased ground pressure of wheeled vehicles over legged ones.[27] Imperial refinements
