Black Armory was a Flop

In my humble opinion Black Armory is a failed experiment and proves that this kind of long drawn out content does not work for Destiny The BOREges The forges are boring and are really only challenging if you are severely under-leveled, they have little replayability aside from grinding for meh weapons. There is still one yet to come but I'm assuming it will end up like the first three, challenging for a day and then face roll until you get the weapon you want. The forge weapons are OKAY but nothing exceptional, the armor in my opinion is hideous and has no new or interesting perks, the gameplay loop itself is exceptionally boring and unengaging. The forges are not a good start for this Annual Pass concept and if this is the standard for whats to come I find it unlikely I'll be playing much Destiny in the future. The Rest of The Game There are no new strikes, Crucible maps, no new armor for any section of the game, no new Gambit maps, no new weapons for any vendor. The Factions for some unknown reasons have not returned and have kinda broken my immersion just sitting there doing nothing, I have no idea why they have not reverted to the Destiny 1 system and just added onto that. These core sections of the game have seen ltitle love in an expansion meant to add to the end-game. New strikes and strike specific loot would be great for keeping players in the playlist as it stands now I can't even bring myself to do my dailies. For some inexplicable reason Bungie thinks players wanna keep playing the same strikes they have been playing for a year now just to get enough power to do the "new" content. I love crucible, but playing on the same maps is getting old and not to mention the lack of Sand Box updates to keep the meta fresh. No Trials for yet another unknown reason, a mode that arguably kept Destiny afloat during the major PvE droughts. In an expansion all about keeping players interested through end-game content there is a stark lack of interesting or diverse things to keep players coming back. The Game is becoming Stale I have been wearing the same armor set for about 3 months now because its the only one I can stand to look at. The design team has really shit the bed on the new armor and weapon models most of which I can't stand. I want to grind for new armor or better looking weapons, but almost every set has some part that ruins the whole thing and the new guns are some of the most visually unappealing in the franchise. I feel unmotivated to play the new raid more than once because the gear from it is so lackluster. What happened to the Fatebringer, Vision of Confluence, Black Hammer, Hawkmoon, Gjallerhorn, Thorn, Bad Juju, Zhalo, Ice Breaker, Invective, all great looking weapons that were fun and powerful. Truth be told this hardly feels like an expansion, this doesn't feel like it should be payed for content, it should have been a free update akin to the April Update, I don't care if they want to add more micro-transaction if they give us free updates but instead we have both micro-transactions and payed updates which feels extremely scummy and ruins all the goodwill built up from the excellent Forsaken DLC. • The one thing that really ruins black armory for me is the sheer amount of timegated content.

  • Destiny is one of the best FPS games for the way it feels when playing, its core mechanics whilst "shooting things in the head" are excellent, but this content is so protracted and dull its almost amusing in its level of repetition. "We brought back machine guns!" whoop de doo, you added a weapon from D1. "Last word is back!" (maybe?) yeah, you added a weapon from D1. and the repetition goes on........creativity, where did you go?

    • Yep Black Armory was just awful the thing that pisses me off is that if people get god roll weapons from black armory i get either 2 taped by a kindled orchid or 2 bursted by a blast furnace Conclusion Black Armory weapons are op and to get them its such a grind

          • Its boring and a failure. The new form of content is garbage. I hate that I already paid for it. Wont make that mistake again.

          • This is how Bungie should fix it: -Reduced quest step length of grind-based quest steps, but added more variety to them to make the steps longer, but easier, and more engaging -Enemies in Forge Activities get their maximum health and damage output reduced by 10% for each player missing, making it a bit easier for players who happened to be matched alone -Reduced Recommended Light Level of Volundr Forge to 580 to give more players a chance to access the new content earlier -Forges now summon a special boss if you manage to kill the Forge Saboteur in less than a minute. The special boss, when killed, will drop one Modulus Report, and have a 5% chance of dropping a Powerful Black Armory reward, as well as -Ballistics Logs no longer disappear on Weekly Reset -Removed “Return to Ada-1” Quest Steps for Calibrated Weapon Frames to make it a bit less repetitive; instead players just have to enter a Forge for them to be ready -Allow players to matchmake in Forges from the Director after completing it once

          • I'm more of a "hardcore" gamer (I don't have a job - no offense to real hardcore players), so I don't mind a grind. But the thing is, Destiny 2 doesn't have a solid gameplay loop; something to grind, something to work towards. So people like me set goals to achieve; collecting exotics, unlocking titles and such. But given that those are dictated by RNGesus, it just leads up to immense frustration. So instead of doing that, I look for other gameplay activities, and there is next to nothing that you can set eyes on and grind for it. Then Black Armory dropped. For the first time, I felt like there is something to work towards. But Bungie keeps binding my hands. Black Armory is to simply put, devoid of content. Just a handful of gear, a new raid, and dreadful mission chains to unlock a forge. The raid is all fine and dandy, but extremely short. Forges are another story; RNGesus dictates the frames every week, and Bungie is artificially trying to extend gameplay by pointless time sinks such as modulus reports. Even though grinding is a repetitive action by nature, such things to artificially extend gameplay given how repetitive and boring the forges are, just drives me away from it. And even if I could stomach it, there isn't much to grind for... and Season of the Drifter won't be any better; it may introduce a few gambit maps, but aside from that I don't know what it'll do for the PvE side of things. And I don't think I'll touch Gambit till they sort LMGs out anyway; when the meta shifts to ~70% of the playerbase using one type of weapon all of a sudden, it should sound a few alarms. Anyway... competition will be good for Destiny I believe. Because right now, there isn't much that keeps me in the game, aside from the company I've got to meet in the game. And I expect most of us will be moving to some other game real soon. When Destiny 3 arrives (as it is clear that most of their team are working on it, as this Annual Pass has little to offer so far), depending on Bungie's actions, we may return... unless they keep doing the same mistakes, if that turns out to be the case, I don't think we ever will.

          • No, what Bungie did, didn't work. Annual passes work just fine for other games, Bungie just has a history of mediocre - at best - content.

          • Lol I called it the first day. After how lame the first forge was I knew the rest weren't going to be much better.... the amount of hate I got for that was outstanding 🤣 People kept telling me I have no idea what i'm talking about and that this is an end game expansion more will come.......... well..... where is this end game that these people so adamantly said was coming? You can tell what a destiny DLC will be like after the first day or so... it's been like that since D1. The first thing you do will be similar to the last thing you do... the imagination for activities is minuscule sadly.

          • I kinda feel like they panicked with Forsaken and released the content they meant to stretch across a few DLC's all at once to try and draw players back. Now they don't have anything real left to release until destiny 3.

          • The grind is long and boring and the content is scarce. That's the real tragedy. Instead of developing more engaging activities, Bungie tried to pull a the wool over our eyes and make little content on a drip one. It was easily seen through. If I were Bungie I would not be doing the AP format again. It's just not engaging enough. I'm fully expecting Joker's Wild to be even less content than BA, with Penumbra being closer to the level of content the player base needs. Honestly, no matter how you feel about Anthem, it's needed. Even if it's terrible it's still going to put pressure on Bungie to do better. They only thrive under pressure such as a waning player base or a threat to their market space. When they're stable they do not do well.

          • As usual, this is the way that Bungie is following they made a great job in Forsaken but they thought that this is enough I am sorry to say they are wasting their time on drawing and graphics and that's clear in the game (but the graphic is amazing) but as a player, I care about the play, power, guns, the CONTENT and I am not going to waste my time waiting for something so they need to be faster. (thank you for talking about this thing PapuJohn)

            • Eh, they stumbled on a few things, mostly the mundane quest steps and the slow roll story. But I’m still enjoying the heck out of it. Definitely worth the investment IMHO, and I haven’t even sniffed the new raid yet.

              • I've been trying to beat the first forge since I was a lowly 600. I'm now 628 and still can't find 2 others I can win with. It's like any other part of the game I guess, like EP, eventually we all grow tired of it. No new PE's, no new LS's, no story, it all just means boring. I started doing the vanguard bounties to get the weapon so I log in everyday to get the 5 he offers and log off in 20-30 minutes once done. From the looks of things we have 11 more months of this, at least.

              • It’s been entertaining enough for me, I don’t feel ripped off or anything. Yes the forge stuff is repetitive and fairly forgettable, but it’s fine in my opinion. I wouldn’t want to see only small DLCs like this always, I’d still like a forsaken style DLC at least yearly, but I’d happily pay for ongoing smaller add ons like black armoury. If it keep me occupied for a month and then I play other games until the next DLC drop, that’s fine.

                • The forges are an end game activity, while they may not be mind blowing end game activities they are end game, sure they are tedious but so is crucible for some and strikes for others so why should doing an activity that takes 5-10 minutes, an activity btw that rewards you with some of the best weapons in the game (looking at you blast furnace, kindled orchid, the sniper and hammerhead) get labeled as boring when you’ve been doing the same strikes since day 1? Do the strikes reward powerful weapons? No, the nightfalls do and even then I’d much rather spend the time farming for a god roll blast furnace (something that can be done every other week now if they keep the 3 weapons cycle) than some mid tier nightfall specific weapon that may or may not even show up on weekly reset. So again why praise strikes that reward next to nothing and despise an activity that gives us a fairly reliable way to get some of the best weapons in the game? The things we got in this micro dlc have been known for a while, we knew that no new strikes would be added or gambit maps (if only we got a gambit focused dlc) but we did get a raid, and before anyone says “BuT iTs A rAiD lAiR” id like to remind you that Crotas end is right there and speaking from personal experience SOTP is a significantly better raid than crotas. You said there’s no new armor, the raid set, the forge set, the new banner set and the vanguard dare set are all right there and they all look fantastic, on top of all that the black armory dlc added some of the best shaders across both games imo (although srl still have the best shaders.) so again where’s the failure in that department? I do have my gripes about armory, time gating a certain hand cannon is a little silly imo, I get why they’re doing it as late as they are, just a little build up for jokers wild. But unlocking the forges in segments I personally think it was a good move, I remember back in the April update? The one that added the Malok strike, they gave us everything right away and guess what happened? Everyone finished everything right away and another drought started, releasing it in parts not only helps with trying to keep the population alive it also helps the game feel less stale, I for one am excited about the labs, I know nothing about it but it’s new experience, it’s something I am excited for specifically because it’s something new. Now I agree, a lot of the armor sets look meh, no arguing there, but there are some that look amazing, hell the vanguard dare cloak is probably my favourite cloak across both games (I know I’ll get called a heretic for not praising the VoG cloak). You also mention amazing weapons, d2 has some fantastic weapons in both visual appeal and usage, exotics alone, malfeasance hands down the best looking exotic hand cannon (I still love you thorn) Cerberus +1 a unique exotic that looks really cool, almost every energy weapon, they look great and quite a few are incredibly useful, and for power I can’t think of a bad one there, even prospector is a good and nice looking weapon. The new raid, threat level, the fusion, the scout, all great weapons that look really nice and let’s not forget the raid exotics, 1k and anarchy, two incredibly powerful and unique weapons. And if you wanna talk about powerful legendaries outside of the raid ones, ep shottie, lunas, blast furnace, go figure, bygones, trust, dust rock, retold tale, mindbenders, all great legendary weapons that all look really nice (except dust rock). I can’t speak for others but imo the arsenal we have in D2 is leagues above what we had in 1, sure there were some stand outs in fatebringer and vision (my all time favourite weapon btw) but I dunno about you but I’d rather have my lunas over a fatebringer any day. I understand nostalgia glasses play a huge role in these feelings towards weapons but like I said, D2 arsenal over D1 any day... unless we’re talking exotics because that’s tough I do have some personal bias towards bolt caster since it is my favourite exotic across both games. (Even though they’re not out yet, all the new forge exotics look really good, even the bow looks fantastic) While Black armory may not have been the typical dlc (even though they made it clear from the get go that it wouldn’t be one... road maps are hard to read I guess) in my opinion I think it was a good dlc... not forsaken level but still leagues above CoO, it gave us a fun raid, really good weapons to chase after and grind for, and it hasn’t even given us all the things we can do in the expansion yet, there’s still more to come and for $15~ I can wholeheartedly say that black armory has been worth every cent so far.
