I got randomly invited to a fireteam the other day. That almost never happens since I mostly solo play. So I joined and ended up talking to two players who were probably around 12 years old. (I'm 38). They told me we were going to do some public event on IO, then break-off and chase some boss into a cave and yadda yadda yadda...."and then we'll all get one of the best exotic sniper rifles in the game"
And I thought? Who uses sniper rifles? And then I thought...even if I did use a sniper....why would it matter that I have "the best" one? I can pick up any sniper rifle at random, and one-shot kill from a mile away already. And as I'm thinking about this, the kid asks "Hey what do you think of the new dawning sparrow? Do you like it?"
And I thought, "sparrows vary in ways that might make me like, or dislike them? Aren't they just those scooters that take me places that I should be able to teleport to anyway?"
So then I dropped out of the fireteam. I thought "I got no time for that, I gotta help my guy get from 588 to 589 before I go to bed"
Then I realized everything I thought I knew about video games was a lie.
I'm old enough to remember when congressmen were crapping their pants because some blood came out of Johnny Cage's mouth when he got punched. And I thought...."Sorry congressman, people have their own brains you know"
Boy was I wrong.
Maybe video game companies were just better at hiding it back in the old days. "You must help mario save the princess!"
YOU must help! There's a goal. An objective. there's a story with characters, and events, that all fit together in a narrative that justifies the time you spend interacting with it. You'd start the game with a small array of abilities. You would use the abilities to interact with the world and gather new items and abilities that allow you to interact with the world in a DIFFERENT way. Or absent that, at the very least there were progressively more difficult challenges to test your skills. The game forced YOU to be better at the game to advance. You can't get to Bowser unless you can get past the hammer brothers without dying. And you can't get there unless your fingers are quick enough to make the double-jump in world 8-2.
Destiny has a learning curve of about 22 minutes, and after that it's the exact same meaningless repetitive cycle. Shoot stuff, get a new gun, shoot some more, get another new gun. And none of the new guns make any bit of difference. PvE is just stupid-easy all the time. I've never equipped a new gun and thought "wow, this opens up a whole different aspect of gameplay"
The only exception to this was a while back when the nightfall had the timer. That forced you to get good at the mission. It forced you to come up with a strategy. It created a goal beyond the "shoot stuff, get more useless crap" dynamic. I actually had to TRY.
But then they did away with that because this is a game for babies and people with their brains turned off.
I mean, what the hell is this game anyway? I'm not interacting with a story. I'm not developing any characters. I'm not challenging my abilities. I'm not forced to get better. I just do chores, and if I do enough chores, a little number next to my guy goes up. What this number means is anybody's guess.
What this game is....is an addictive substance used to manipulate kids. It's a sick, twisted, reward system that creates addicts. This game isn't meant to be fun. It's actually MEANT to keep you bored, and numb. Bungie didn't make a video game. They made a pacifier for which people need to keep paying 50 bucks every few months to keep sucking.
Oh my god, I can't believe how much time I put into this game. I can't believe I fell for the plot. I can't believe I was a part of this. I can't believe I ever defended the video game companies against the censors and the critics. they should have just shut this stuff down when Doom came out, and been done.
If you play this game....worse, if you play this game AND read this forum....you're a victim. Stand up for yourself, and leave.
I'm serious. Everyone, please challenge yourself to justify what you're doing every time you pick up the controller. Ask yourself if there is a good reason. If you play video games to relax, or de-stress, or commune with friends...ask yourself if there is ANYTHING else you could do that achieves those goals.
Anything would be better than this.

2 RepliesAll this post does is make me feel sorry for you, not myself or the Destiny community. Sorry that your world is so shaken by the apparent sudden realization of something that everyone else goes into gaming knowing. Just like music, books and other art forms, video games are consumed, not because they are necessary, but because of the feelings they elicit. Equating everyone to junkies/victims because they enjoy a game you don't is pathetic. Stop playing the victim and go find something you do enjoy.
Anything would be better than this.
Patently false.

But that would require me making friends with a bunch of meth heads... I am guessing D2 is a bit safer than that option...

1 ReplyBroken my collarbone is the only reason I've so much lately. Got BFV for Xmas so plan to start playing Destiny a lot less

1 ReplyWhat a waste of time Reading that! You owe me 5 mins now you fool!

1 Reply1. Have you ever played a game just because you enjoy doing it. 2. Destiny has a lot of story telling, while it does not have much or hardly any cenematic scenes it has an incredible amount of lore in it's tabs and D1 had grimoir cards to collect that was full of lore. you want story? read the books of sorrow. or the story of thorn and last word. 3.Try doing the raid with green weapons. So if you think there is no progression your wrong. 4. i am assuming all the ascendant challenges are just a breeze for you since you said it takes no skill or i am also to assume you have the wish ender since that dungeon so so easy for you . AND Lastly. i am a 47 year old gamer that played countless hours of mario and level 8-2 was not hard at all.

1 ReplyI'm chilling with my freinds. I don't play if there isn't a chat party running.

1 Replyalright bud, if you feel this way dont play. but ive had people tell me how toxic a player you are, im sorry but you have to be removed from the guild.

15 RepliesOof. Eight years my senior and you are having your midlife crisis over a video game. That's an embarrassing first world problem you got there. You're critiquing peoples reason to playing the game and investing a lot of their time into their hobby/pass time. It's no different from being a couch potato watching TV, collecting playing cards, building models, or fishing for sport. People spend time on their interests and hobbies because it's rewarding for them. Our brains require stimulation from entertainment and everyone has their own preferred way to stay entertained. It's ironic that you'd find yourself complaining about this in a video game but not in real life. In the end we all die and all that matters is if we enjoyed living to the point that death would suck.

6 RepliesYou didnt even know about the whisper quest and you actually jumped into a random fireteam because you got an invite? Do you even play this game? But tbh, the game isnt meant to be played all day long. It's like every other game, play it for a while and go do something else. Treat it like Madden or FIFA and you shouldn't have issues

1 ReplyLol Somebody needed attention today.

2 RepliesNot everyone enjoys the loot and shoot grind fest that is Destiny. Personaly I enjoy it. And the few hours i get to play every day or so helps me to unwind while I chat with my friends who...are doing the same thing. We talk about our guns, gear, glory and the lore. If you dont like it then hey, maybe its not for you man.

Nah. I think its fun, I don’t need a reason to play. When I’ve got nothing better to do, I play. Boom.
-
Post-script to this.... I took a quick look through other forum topics. At least 3 on the first page are "no more enhancement cores". Guys.....the whole game is doing chores. Getting enhancement cores is not any different than getting anything else. If you don't like grinding for cores....then what the hell do you like? Becuase there isn't any aspect of this game that is substantially different than the act of grinding for cores

You create your own misery and disinterest, explore those and see the challenge before claiming there is none

10 RepliesYou say no gun will change the way you play pve, you've never had ghorn, fate bringer, EP shotgun, whisper, Luna's howl etc. Have you?
-
31 RepliesVery simple. To zone out from real life stress by killing aliens. The loot is just a perk to keep the rinse repeat.

1 ReplyI wouldn’t be having fun either if I had to use your loadouts.

9 RepliesWhisper isn’t any better than any other sniper rifle in the game. Lol!

I actually enjoy PvP when connection isn't a problem. Better to play against ppl than pve

This place keeps me laughing throughout my shift. To see many people lose their shit over frivolous nonsense in a video is hilarious. The best ones are those who believe any and all accomplishments in this game have some weight on their resume. The ones that believe since they earned that Wayfarer title, they automatically are promoted from French fryer operator to drive through checkout attendant. LOLz.....

3 RepliesYou can look at every type of video game with this perspective. Racing game... What's the point? Drive a car around a few laps and make money. Buy a new car with said money and do the same thing over and over again. Same thing with any other shooter game. Win a match unlock a new gun or something. You need to just enjoy a game and stop looking into is so hard. The game is not the issue, you are the issue.
