This is how Bungie made playing Destiny a chore.

Now this is coming from a D1 veteran. Playing Destiny has been my hobby for a few years. So it’s sad for me to say this but playing D2 has become a chore. It wasn’t always that way. In D1 I started playing on PS4 and after a year I also started playing on Xbox after Rise of Iron. When I started on Xbox I played through everything on one character then on the other two characters I leveled them up to 400 just playing the crucible. I could play what I wanted and still be leveling up. The milestones in D2 are a bad idea. I have to play 3 Gambit matches. I have to play three strikes. I have to play 5 crucible matches. I have to play the night fall. I have to do all the dreaming city stuff. See where I’m going. I have to do those things or I won’t level up. Leveling up is important because you need to be a high enough level to play the raid. What Black Armory did was expose this bad design. It was a very bad decision to block access to a dlc people paid for behind a level requirement to start. This is why the community is angry. Me included. We have to play old content for a couple of weeks to start this. Now I have to go do all those milestones to get high enough to play this dlc. That takes time. And I can’t spend that time leveling up by playing nothing but crucible or strikes. I got to do those milestones. This game has now become a chore instead of something fun. I already have a job. I was also looking forward to new crucible maps and new strikes but none of that in this dlc. Hey maybe I’ll get some new armor or weapons from the vendors. Nope. Only thing to do is chase some weapons and grind some more after grinding for three months to climb 220 points. If this is the future of Destiny then this has got me considering not playing Destiny anymore. That is the first time I ever thought that. Just thought I’d share this feedback with Bungie so they can understand why people are angry with this game and what they might consider changing in the future.

  • It is more like a job than a hobby. I play guitar for 30 minutes and learn a lot and have a good time. I play Destiny for 30 minutes and I get very little done with RNG and unsatisfying long-winded quests.

  • Milestones are the biggest time-gate in the game. Who the hell time-gates leveling up? In 30 years of playing games this is the first to ever do it. Plus in Forsaken they doubled down so it’s not hours a week that matters, it’s hours a day. Before Forsaken if player A played 2 hours everyday for 14 total and player B only plays on Saturday for 14 they would progress the same amount. Now player B gets left behind and can’t catch up until after player A hits max and can’t get higher. Bungie has no respect for players time.

    • Wow, you sound like a real whinger. If you were a D1 Vet then this is dam easy compared to D1. I did 1 week of 'weekly challenges' and I had not done them in a while as I was 600. Now after 1 week and a few Forge adventures I am 618. God!!! All you people want it all given to you!!! Yes I play Crucible too, The Redryx Claymore, The Lunas Howl & The Not Forgotten. I also work 5 and a half days a week.

      • It's bizarre that Bungie doesn't understand that time-gating progression just drives people away. You get to a point where there are no more milestones for that week and it's pretty much 'come back next week and maybe you'll progress.' Yeah - you give me 4 f--king helmets or Edge Transits in a row - really feels like I'm progressing. I enjoy Destiny but damn they do their hardest to push people away. Putting the first forge at 615 was asking for trouble and I find it odd that it get through testing. Did no-one bring this up? Especially considering it was paid DLC?

      • Hear, hear! Well said. The Milestones system sucks. We should get powerful engrams based on earned XP. The player should decide if he/she wants to get that XP from strikes, crucible, story missions, gambit, raids, whatever.

        • The forge stuff i agree with you on, but lets not be so quick to forget where the game was last year around this time we were all begging for stuff to do. I tried to have a conversation about the issues with the power level and the forge with someone on twitch and they told me the game "wasn't for me" if they only knew how many hours i have in this franchise between d1 and d2. I want there to be a meaningful grind to destiny that's worth investing time into, i also tried to make a point that when a dlc drops it should kind of be like how it is when the yearly xpacs do people who are lower light get a considerable amount of power upgrades until they hit a soft cap , with the power cap being raised 50 bungie could have easily done this to get people along to 600 power and then throttled it down again (which if i read the twab correctly it seems they are doing, but it should have been there at release). Bungie has all kinds of stats on player power levels and who bought the annual pass or not , how they didn't see this as being a potential issue is beyond me , but i also thought the same thing about base destiny 2 maybe im the one who just over analyzes things i dont know . I'd hate to see the player base loose faith in bungie again after forsaken did alot to rejuvenate the game a bit and destiny is going to have more competition in the coming months with the division 2, anthem , warframe is getting more and more popular and the inevitable borderlands 3 .

        • They have designed the game so it's best to play the current DLC just before the next one is coming. The dawning machine gun will probably be 650 which will bring drops up on average and then you level quicker. I'd given up last time until the horror story came out and then levelling was easy. Its not great because you want to play the new stuff when it arrives, but they have to appease people who just play all day.

        • I gave up on the first day of FOTL and have never looked back tbh, all of my clanmates but 1 have done the same..the grindiness is fkn horrible, the chances of Forsaken exotics is slightly better than zero and now the DLC we all paid for is totally out of reach unless I grind for a month to get to the right light level. I gave up and it has been great not having Destinys dark shadow hanging over me, always worrying about not keeping up..fk that just let it go.

        • I quit playing about a month ago. After the horrible Thunderlord quest, the Temporal Surge Eververse rip-off, and Getting 2 players on the refer-a-friend quest that refused to finish it cuz they didn't like the game.... I just QUIT playing. Best thing I ever done by the way. I see the Black Armory is the worst DLC ever, but I anticipated that. Goodbye to everyone. Goodbye Bungie.

Bungie -blam!-ed up. They know it but they won’t admit it. Why the -blam!- can’t I even do the first forge at 600 light? Make me play the game getting energy weapon powerful drops for 90% of engram. Bungie can suck my dick.

        • Great post. Im 40 w wife and 3 kids and work full time on rail road. I have to admit i think destiny is my favorite game ever being a console gamer since intelavision. But i can not play continously then after 6 hours of play my power goes up maybe 4 points if im lucky. Im only a 547 and bought the delux version. Havent even turned on to check out black armory because im afraid of the job of powering to enjoy it. So i think i wasted 100 dollars. After reading all these posts something has to give. Maybe people who dont log alot of hours can power up faster based on an average as oppose to someone who plays 10 hours 7 days a week. So everone can enjoy the content they paid for.

New player here. Started playing last month. Don't get me wrong, I'm loving the gameplay and classes (especially Warlock, so much fun), that's why I bought Forsaken and an annual pass. However, the power gate in a lot of the content I bought seems like way out of the natural progression. As I was making my way through light level below 500, I was just playing and enjoying the game. I came to a grinding halt when I came to Dreaming City. I got rag dolled. I looked at the light level requirement, a tad high, but I never realized how slow of a crawl I had to do to get to play through the rest of the content. It got worse when I started reading on raids, and those ascendant challenges with egg hunts you can only do with an exotic bow, with more and more catalysts piling on my inventory, flooding me with weapon-ish upon weapon-ish each needing a week's worth of grind ("I need how many games for the what now!?"). NOTE: In video games, I'm well aware that there there are some items you need to put in time for but this amount of grind is a tad bit ridiculous. If any of you Bungie guys are reading this, here's a list of some things that are easier to do that all the power gating and never ending Exotic and Legendary quest items in Destiny 2 are competing for time for: 1. Getting laid 2. Belting up for JiuJitsu 3. Learning a new language at a 1st grade's level 4. Certify for Red Cross I hope you keep in mind that while those listed have inherently worthy rewards, by comparison you are awarding us with a bunch of pixels that shoots slightly stronger virtual bullets and/or the ability to comfortably play PART of a piecemeal content that we already paid for.

Agreed I get very little time now days to play maybe a hour a day. I hate the new levelling system. Power engrams are capped etc I don’t have time to raid, I’m aware I can hit max light without raiding but it’s a pain in the ass

Wow.... People whined and complained to easy now its to hard, Jesus, I’m sick of this forum, I have a full time job, I spend 3-4 hours playing with family and friends. 4 months ago I had no job, streamed every day, got to 600 fast and did the raid, now I’m enjoying it more because I’m not doing everything in one go. Play the game or leave it, stop -blam!-ing round with the state of the game because it’s not up to YOUR standard of gaming. And how you’ve got so much support in this post is because everyone is the casual player, nothing special, go do something better than complain about the state of the game because you have to do a few things a week. Not only that you’ve not even touched the last wish raid and you’re complaining? Entitled to a change in the game because you’ve purchased 2 copy’s? Okay I’ve bought: Xbox x2 plus all dlc PS4 plus all dlc Pc x2 plus all dlc And you think you’re entitled to how others might prefer this type of grind. Pfft.

                • I remember having an out of body experience while playing Destiny not so long ago. I saw myself buying 1000 simulation seeds with legendary shards, taking the seeds to Vance, exchanging them for weapons and armour which I then immediately dismantled in a search for mod components and masterwork cores. I looked down on myself doing this ridiculous thing, and just said “Nope - no more”

                • I realised it was becoming a chore when bouncing round hopelessly on d1 mars farming rng relic crystals for the dark drinker. It suddenly dawned on me I was being controlled and forced to do tedious things. At that point I stopped doing things that bored me. When d2 released, I hated it. Didn’t buy or play it until just before forsaken when I tried a free trial and the d1 “feel” was back, so I bought it for £21 with the first two expansions. Soon found myself dropping back into the grind you mention, doing all the things I dislike just to progress. I stopped there and then, I just play what I enjoy now and let the levelling just happen at its own rate. Only time I’ve succumbed was for the ace of spades quest, but only when they eased the pvp requirement, no way I would have it with the original requirements.

                  • Bungie can go fornicate themselves in the rectum for all I care at the moment. Seriously WTF where they thinking? Oh wait they don’t think about anything but their profits and shareholder that’s it NOTHING ELSE!! They have proven this countless times and continue to do so. Let’s make a new activity then make it impossible for almost ALL of our community. Instead of dropping the forge with you know maybe a 600-610 boss so players could get their feet wet for whats to come nope. If we know Bungie anything that makes sense they will do the exact opposite. Go ahead prove me wrong Bungie I f***ing dare you!!! This is your chance Bungie I’m calling you brain dead idiots out on your shiet!!!

                  • If Bungie doesn’t learn to aim for the middle the game is in serious trouble. The “casual” players were the largest segment of the player population so if they run off the ones who are left (Warmind and Forsaken did a good job of that) the game is in jeopardy of not surviving this year. I am a hobby player and this game isn’t being made for me either. I have more time played than most people, but I don’t like the new direction the game took of relying on RNG and anti-player progression to falsely inflate playtime since Warmind. It’s not fun. The game is currently designed for two types of players that make up the smallest % of players: streamers, and people who like an endless grind with tiny incremental progression because they think that’s fun. I’m not mad they like it, but only 10% of players still play the game and that is a problem. Running off more customers isn’t a solution. The game isn’t a hobby, it’s a full time job with mandatory overtime where you get paid in lottery tickets. That’s not a spot for the game.

                    • I kind of agree. But it's nice when content lasts. I only play 2h a night or so and I've not even attempted the forge with my rng powerful drops I had 6 sets of arms at the same lvl so that me screwed. Maybe a month before dlc drops they could enable power lvling to start then when new content drops we can actually play. Thats the trouble I have with last wish raid. Last month I finally got to 600 and using this app everyone wants player that kwtd. With a month to grind upto light lvl we're all at the same power and could easily match make.

                    • Well articulated. Also some of those activities you have to do are 100% not fun for some. However this game has strugled very much because the game designers do not know how to separate level and power to have meaningful progression while not limiting player access. So far with each dlc and expansion we have negation of effort by making anything we have done powerwise pointless and levels are just a meaningless number. Bungie colecyively needs to play another mmo and their own game and see the flaws.
