If you’re trying to calculate the isoelectronic point at which amino acids migrate in an electric field then looks probably don’t matter. But if you’re trying to win the swimsuit section in the Miss America pageant then they probably do.

Whether or not someone is physically beautiful or not is superficial. Grooming, personal hygiene is important. I new someone who would dress like a slob and go out in need of a shower and a good teeth-brushing (or at least some mouthwash.) His attitude was if you complained you must be shallow. Wrong, it's just good manners.

In order for one to have a successful romantic and sexual relationship there has to be some form of physical attraction involved (with the one exception of those who are asexual), meaning you and your partner gotta have something to look at. Now obviously no successful relationship is based solely on looks, that’s where personality and shared interests come into play, but to say that you have a relationship with someone you aren’t attracted to well then congratulations you got yourself a friend. However I feel it’s important to mention that what “society” or more accurate what the media considers as beautiful or sexy isn’t the whole story as beauty is truly in the eyes of the beholder and no clothing ad or movie can determine that for everyone. In short the way I see it, it’s the looks that make you interested and the personality and shared interests stuff that makes you stay.
