The purpose of this post is to explore certain social positions, find where we draw the line, or how far we will going to push our ideologies.
the question is this:
In recent times, people have been calling for the destruction of confederate and other monuments due to their relation to slavery.
my questions to the supporters of this claim is.
How far should we go, should we destroy all buildings and monuments associated with slavery.
if so, what about the pyramids, or the Taj Mahal? our castles and cities built in Europe, Africa, Asia, and South America? those where built by slaves, should we destroy them too? or the Great Wall of China?
Can they not stay up as reminders?
My questions to the detractors (the people who say keep them up)
Should we leave monuments up to people who dealt in human slavery? what about -godwinslaw!- monuments? should we have left up the statues of hitler, what about Lenin, or Stalin, Castro, Mao? should they keep their monuments?
Be respectful, and recognize that there is room for compromise out there.

1 ReplyThe whole point of history is to learn from it. If we censor history that we don't like, we won't be able to learn lessons from it. I don't agree with the the Confederates did, but we should still keep their monuments up to remember our history.

The vast majority of them were put up about 50 years after the end of the civil war during the KKK golden years, or the civil rights movements. These monuments are not statutes to heritage of the south. They’re statues to slavery. They were built by racists, to honor racists. The Pyramids weren’t built by slave labor but that’s beyond the point. The thing is those building while built by slaves, they were not put up by a group of racists on public property to honor another group of racists for fighting for the subjugation of an entire race. The argument comes down to the reason for building them

10 RepliesI do not agree with destroying the monuments, but I think they should be put in a museum at the least. They are a very pointed reminder that evil can happen, even when you think you are on the side of the angels.

I believe whatever county the monument is in should hold a vote on whether it stays up or comes down. You then have to prove your residency in said county for eligibility to vote. Easy enough.

Edited by Cobravert: 8/30/2018 11:18:21 PMAs a northerner, they lost. They shouldn't have monuments to the defeated. I do know that many Civil War monuments built in the south were not erected until decades after the war ended, and many were intentionally designed to propagate segregation. Do I think they should be torn down.... I do not. At least not by a bunch of misguided, mob driven morons who act like a bunch of crazed baboons endangering themselves and others destroying these statues and structures, then kicking and hitting them as though the statue can feel the abuse. It's all grandstanding and hysteria. They have destroyed some monuments that were not even glorifying Confederate leaders, but were mistaken because they had no idea of the statue's history. I am in favor of states or cities hiring professionals to come in and remove ones that are obvious oppressive markers. Do it in private, and just let them disappear. I doubt the fanatical and attention grabbers would allow this to happen and would probably harass the workers removing them, just to have a target to attack. I despise the demonstrators who do things like this. They deserve a couple months of hard labor to reset their respect for others meter.
