My experience at the Destiny Community Summit

It's taken me a little longer to post this than I'd hoped, but it obviously was a crazy week for me and I did not get back home until late yesterday evening and was pretty jet lagged today. There is a lot of speculation and discussion about the Destiny Community Summit and I know my fellow attendees have been posting their thoughts, so here are my impressions of the event. To begin I want to say that I understand how incredibly fortunate I was to be invited to be a part of this. I know all the speculations going in about motivations by who was on the list and even within the group of attendees there was a wide range of opinions on what the event would be. I believed the first and foremost reason for the summit and most important goal would be to try to rebuild and repair the relationship between the community and developers, beyond that we had a lot of discussions before hand of what the community would like addressed/discussed. To that end I wrote up a summary of those discussions to take with me as things I hoped we could cover. As this will go well beyond the forum word limit, I’m going to link the sections below. Thoughts and hopes going in Day 1 experience Day 2 experience My fellow attendees have written and talked about what their experiences were and I know there is still skepticism in the community as to motivations and intent on all sides, but this event was literally everything I hoped it might be and then somehow proceeded to exceed that exponentially. I’m as hopeful for the future of a Bungie game as I’ve ever been. Thank you. Edit: I want to add something else to this as I've been seeing and reading takes on the summit and I want as honest a narrative as possible. I don't agree with any notion that this is the first time Bungie has listened and that their listening to us at the summit is going to potentially "save the game". I feel that discounts things we were shown already being developed as well as not only easily identifiable player impact throughout D1, but everything that we've seen in developer comments, TWaBs, updates and roadmaps since launch. I know we did have very direct impact on some things and were very helpful in thoughts and opinions on a lot of things going forward at the summit, but I don't want to take anything away from the impact of your feedback and the things we already saw them doing and/or know are coming/in development that are directly from them listening to the community at large. What I saw was a company that has heard your voices and feedback on the game and this summit was another step in that process and a chance for more intimate face-to-face discussions on those thoughts and ideas. Thank you again.
The measure of this moment is the measure of the hope it can bring and if it's gonna make a difference, the difference will be easy to see. -Swell
• This summit has been done because it's a lot more cost productive than getting their team of 800 developers actually creating new content. Bungie invite a handful of Youtubers over there so they can come back and create some hype and it's hardly cost them anything. The "Live team" will now just do what they were going to, with no changes, and they will sell more of the DLC that was content removed before the game was released.

  • What a long and convoluted post of nothing. I talked to thus guy and that guy nobody cares about that. Did u see or learn anything that gives u hope for the future of d2, are they going in the right direction or are they still lost? Dear god, its people like u who gave them improper feedback that ruined the god damn game and they called u again for input. Yep, its confirmed they are on the wrong track yet again.

        • Damn Sols, I see you put some thought into this post but you have to be aware of the off putting optics of this community summit. Firstly it conveniently happens days before the reveal of new DLC to drum up interest in a dying game from a pissed off community. Secondly only streamers and “influencers” were invited with no actual members of the community involved. Lastly the NDA. I’ve watched 3 videos from people who were there and they couldn’t say anything which was beyond useless. How does that help a floundering franchise and community like this? I respect what YouTube and Twitch streamers do and part of me wishes I could make a living doing what you do (Damn engineering degrees). The problem is that it appears you guys have been played by a semi-clever marketing department for cheap advertising and it does not appear that any of you realize it. I hope I’m wrong though.

            • Hate to break it to you buddy, but in this chess game you are the pawn sacrificed for a bigger move. Did any of you ask why the summit even happened? You know, because of the mountains upon mountains upon mountains of feedback data that already existed before the summit? You have been so completely outplayed here. Frankly the naivety is kind of unbelievable.

              • as honest a narrative as possible? Who were all the attendees? Why was each person chosen? How much was each person compensated by Bungie? A company that has heard your voices? What have they actually done with the rampant feedback? Why do they continue to not listen? you cannot tell us what is actually coming because of an NDA how is that transparent to anyone not there? all defenses and assurances will have to be borne out by actions which are very lacking. Bungie is not open or honest about what is going on or what will be happening

              • No offense, but why the hell should I care what you think about the future of Destiny? I don't know who you are, don't really care to know, and you sound incredibly sycophantic. I'll believe this game gets better when I see it. I agree with everyone else, downvoted and gfys.

              • Cool story. Glad you had a good time but this post has absolutely zero substance. I understand you can’t reveal anything because of your agreement, but since that’s the case why bother saying anything at all? I am being 100% honest when I say that no matter what you or anyone else says about the changes coming toD2, I will not be buying any further expansions unless there is an overwhelming amount of positive feedback. I think a lot of people are just like me and see this whole ridiculous summit as a last ditch effort to bring players back. I don’t, but there must be a decent amount of people that watch streamers and content creators, but I don’t think that those folks want you, streamers, or video creators speaking for them about what they want or don’t want in the game. To a lot of folks this was another time that Bungie proves they just do not understand the players. I have already paid for the first 2 expansions so I’ll play “warmind” but I’ll probably never spend another dollar on a Bungie game and up till now I have bought literally everything Bungie ever created.

                    • What kind "community summit" is it, when the community is not allowed to know anything? It is just a PR stunt .. and after the next DLC it may even be irrelevant, if it is "as good" as the last one.

                        • So basically you went to the summit, had a really good time, asked some questions and came home. Was there any point in this post other than bragging rights? You are sworn to secrecy to questions and answers we will never know so why bother making this post at all? Let's face it, most of those who went are probably the ones responsible for the mess we have now because bungie listened to them wining in the first place and now they represent all of us. Makes sense......not.

Publicity stunt. Whoever went, lost their balls and objectivity. Would anyone had gone if bungie didn’t pay for it? There are hundred thousands of post feedback for bungie so why do they need to invite anyone? Did anyone ask if the September dlc will be part of the 100 bucks that people preordered to get recycled content? No way in hell will I pay another penny for this game. Because they know they screwed up so bad and worry about future sales that’s why yalll were invited. They could have used that money to partially refund their players to show good faith but that would be admission of failure. Did you forget how your channels got crushed when D2 is a bust? Don’t try to pretend you’re representing us. Btw, your trip was paid for by the money that people spent on loot boxes, remember those?

Yes they have always been listening but they have not been paying attention (past context). There’s a big difference in my eyes. I feel now they are paying attention because they have to. It doesn’t matter either way to me because the result will always be the same. Anytime you start paying attention is the moment you wake up from the obscure world in which we live. Especially with the modern era it can be highly deceptive to analyze feedback because most people are still searching for who they are. Our culture has produced generations of lost people. If people don’t know who they are and wander aimlessly with no purpose the feedback they give may not turn out to be trustworthy sadly. People who do not really realize what they want in life will be a shaky ground to analyze if you don’t have the eyes keen enough to decipher them. I’ve been trying to help in this regard. Decipherment. The human is still a mystery unto themselves (we are still studying people, brains, etc., and no dna is repeatable) so those who have the wisdom to know who they are will understand everyone on multiple levels. We are all deep down the same person. “If you know the enemy and know yourself, you need not fear the result of 100 battles.” This could also read this way... If you know your friend and know yourself, you need not fear the result of 100 battles FOR THEM. Edit clari

                            •
What I saw was a company that has heard your voices and feedback on the game
Then how are we even in this position right now? Why have we been in this position for months? Destiny 1 had 2 years of feedback before D2 started taking shape (assumption, don't sweat the exact number). They could have no been listening and just observing what worked, what was popular. They play their game, what did they find fun about it? And how are we going to be waiting until a year after release to get a game that is acceptable as being Destiny? They saw the fiasco that was The Division. That game made money, but retained a few percent of the player base, and burned the vast majority. Players feeling they the payed $60 for a beta doesn't lead to potential customers for the second release. Sorry for the rhetorical questions. No one cares about listening and hearing. Nothing about this situation is okay. Players are losing a game they really enjoyed and a business is facing an uncertain future. Had you known that the game would be lacking a lot of things D1 did well, was watered down, etc etc, and that most of the problem won't be resolved until a year after the release Would you have purchased it

                              • You know... I really don't understand how people believe being as toxic as they are is going to help anything. If you are done with Bungie and this franchise then why are you here fanning a flame that the majority of people want to try and put out to fix. At the very least be skeptical. That is the default position that one can be respected for. Personally I don't care what Sols asked at the summit because other people that went there already told their communities what they would be discussing. Meylien put together an excellent list of community concerns over the lore. Mtashed was brutal with his bluntness and Gothalion is one of the most honest content creators out there. He is brutal to everyone, even Gearbox during the old Pre-Sequel fiasco that was addressed far too late. Sols, don't communicate with these forums. Its just toxic at this point. No room for general discussion or skepticism, if you aren't toxic towards the game you are not welcomed here. Reddit at least has common sense.
