Guns and the U.S.A.

Every single time there is a mass shooting in the United States, people start talking about guns/firearms/weapons and gun control. Many people declare who should and should not own a gun and why. Many make blanket generalized statements about Americans who own guns. And those who reference the 2nd amendment are typically attacked for their belief in the Constitution and the Bill of Rights. Here's the thing. Everyone is entitled to their opinion, but their opinion is pointless if contradicted by fact. You can say that only hunters and farmers should own rifles, but that doesn't make it so. You can say that no one should own a semi automatic rifle and be limited to bolt action but that won't make it so. By the way, the guy who shot Kennedy used a bolt action rifle. Your clamoring for more gun laws won't help all the hundreds of people who are murdered each year in Chicago, because criminals don't get their guns legally. Your suggestions that we make it more difficult for law abiding Americans to purchase firearms legally won't do anything to stem the tide of violence, as was the case with the terrorists in San Bernardino California. The restrictions you seek would not have prevented Sandy Hook, which was perpetrated by a young man who killed his own mother and stole her weapons in order to kill small children. Why does the 2nd Amendment exist? As a deterrent to tyranny. So many claim that no one has had to take up arms against the government or defend the country. I guess they forgot about the civil war. Millions of people in this country own weapons. And millions do so legally without incident. And yet, when one person goes on a rampage, suddenly millions should not be allowed to defend themselves? I own an M-4 with seven 30 round magazines. I own a 12 gauge Mossberg defender. I own a Sig Sauer sp2022 .40 caliber handgun. And I own a Ruger mini-14 semi-automatic rifle with six 20 round magazines. I also own two swords and a couple of knives. And I hope I never have to use any of them. Ever. But I have them, because it's my right. And it's yours too.

Jesus Christ... Listen to yourself. Fact: No other country on the planet has the same problem with guns, gun violence, school shootings, mass killings involving guns. Fact: Other first world countries do have gun violence, but nowhere near the scale of the USA. Fact: Yes, other types violence may have increased in other countries after tighter gun laws were introduced, but... It's nowhere near the scale of gun violence and you cannot possibly compare the two. Most major mass killings have involved a "terrorist" element that would have been much more devastating had access to guns been easier. Fact: Gun violence and mass shootings were dramatically reduced in Australia after our gun laws were introduced. Fact: On average over 15,000 Americans are killed with guns EVERY YEAR (not including suicides). Fact: The 2nd amendment was written for a different time with different circumstances... You couldn't let it go when it was no longer necessary, and you have what you have now. Fact: No civilian stopped the Florida shooter. You keep your ignorant heads buried deep in your ignorant asses. Because the rest of the world is wrong... Couldn't possibly be you... Right? You people use misdirection and deflection to justify your personal adgendas, instead of what's best for the future of your children and country. People like you make me sick. https://d2n6ofw4o746cn.cloudfront.net/nnd/5a1dd0c8a99430e2c8a5a5c73b8f9283/index.html

Banning/confiscating guns won't stop anything. Just like the war on drugs currently. Look at prohibition and how that worked out. We are a nation built on guns. Our 2A isnt for hunting, its to protect us from a tyrannical government. People will just smuggle guns from Mexico just like drugs and other shit. If there is a market, people will find a way. I have machining experience, i can make a firearm on the weekend if I wanted. Not traceable. Do I? No. I also have access to a 3d printer, can make a gun. Do I? No. That guy who killed those kids in Florida, previously stated he wanted to be a professional school shooter. The fbi was notified. Nothing was done. He was banned from coming to the school if he had a backpack. How many more flags where needed to get this guy on a watch list? Guess the FBI was to busy investigating emails or whatever. My opinion on how to reduce gun violence across all spectrums Home It starts at home. Parents need to more active in their childs life. All aspects of it. Friends, activities, social media and so forth. Knowing what your child does, says or reads. We live in a very connected society nowadays. There is a lot of evil out there that a questionable mind may be influenced by. You may find something that can save their life and others if you just be more involved. Broken homes, the lack of discipline, no positive role model to help guide them. My hero growing up was my grandfather. Not a celebrity or athlete telling me how to live. Education Actually getting your diploma by studying and passing and not just passed through the system. Im all for a free 2 year trade/technical or community college for students. If they make the grade, then scholarships. Then use that trade or skill to better yourself. Poverty/Lack of high paying jobs. Self explanatory right here and that doesn't mean raising minimal wage to $15 a hour. Increase manufacturer jobs especially in urban areas. People that have a opportunity to get paid well will do this. Mental health This is one that gets over looked. I work in a hospital, ill say 90% that come in are full of shit. Working the system to either get drugs, a bed and food for the night and disability so they dont have to work. Typically they get sent to a state run facility. My area sends to 1 place and that facility serves 50 counties. Cant get adequate help that way and the ones that legit need help, get overlooked. Yes, some slip through the cracks, that nobody pays attention to and they go on a shooting spree. Its sad, but people will find a way to kill no matter what the situation. People do snap or something goes off in their head that makes them want to do something horrific like this. Maybe if more help was available. They could get it. I own around 30 guns. Probably around 10k+ of ammo and reloading supplies. I shoot regularly. All of mine besides a few are locked safely away. Ive never had the thought of doing something like what happened. Ive pulledy gun twice and almost a 3rd in almost 15 years i carried a concealed weapon. Never fired at anyone. In the words of Ice-T. Ill give my guns up when everyone else does first. Edit: Common sense gun laws you may say. Everyone has their own version of common sense. So that is out the window.

        • Its not my right, where im from its a priveledge and i treat it as such, but also i live in a country where i dont have to worry about my children being gunned down while theyre at school, or about my government trying to for whatever reason start killing its own citizens.

          • It’s your right, so it’s whatever. But I will say this; at some point, the shootings are going to hit a boiling over point and whether Americans like it or not, something’s gotta change.
Every single time there is a mass shooting in the United States...
Gonna stop you right there. There has been 18 in the U.S. in this year alone. Where I live, we don't own guns, and there are no mass shootings. Also, no mass stabbings and no other mass killings. I know guns, God and NASCAR is all holy to you guys. But the first shouldn't be owned by untrained, unstable people. The second is a thousands years old fairytale and the third is the same as throwing different colors of marbles in a bowl and watch that go round and round.

              •
but their opinion is pointless if contradicted by fact
Australian gun laws. There's all the proof you need right there. Now, in Sydney, the largest city in the country with 5 million people, if there happens to be a shooting one day it's all over prime time news, headlines the biggest papers etc etc. it's so rare and shocking to hear of an actual shooting taking place. It just doesn't happen.

                • The NRA should be labeled a terrorist organization as gun owners have killed FAR more Americans than ISIS.

                  • If we ban guns, the culture which we perceive things will have to change. We can not look at the government as individuals who make it up but rather one body of perfection, which can never turn into a dictatorship. We have to think that we do not have a right to protect ourselves with people who are armed with such weapons. It is not outlandish to think that people want USA to turn into other countries. They go, "But other 1st world countries don't have this and they are doing fine!" What is the culture there like? I imagine it to be different to the USA. What happens if there was a sudden change in culture over there? The government over there decided they wanted to control and kill anyone who disagrees with them? How are you going to defend yourselves, with knifes? You would have to look towards criminals in order to defend you, the same people who you might have despised. No country lasts forever.

                  • You need to do something. Start with trying to reduce the number of domestically owned guns by 50% and take it from there.

                      • It's the low hanging fruit. Too many people go for the low effort no sacrifice solutions. The NRA is the villain they need to make them feel like heroes, while pushing legislation that will affect other people.

Wasn’t there a US poll conducted a year or two ago that showed something like 76% of the American public wanted tighter gun control, yet this was ignored by law makers?

                        • I feel a government funded security team for schools would be simple. They don’t have to be secret service level agents, just some people like office security guards. Most schools have an on campus police officer, even some elementary schools, but one officer isn’t always enough. I myself am a supporter of gun rights, so if the gov’t can pay for 60 million dollar planes to fly recon over the Middle East, they can pay for some security guards to protect America’s youth where they should feel safest.

                              • 1. Increase funding for mental health treatment. 2. Increase encouragement and funding for counseling, many who commit these crimes are emotionally troubled but we live in a system that stigmatizes counseling aid. 3. Funnel more money into the education system to make armed security for schools affordable. That’s my solution.
