So I just read an article about how the destiny story doesn't work because "You cannot have a mute hero who is also a generic nobody while also being heralded as a world-saving god among men." I think it would add way more to the game if our guardians responded to shooting things or throwing grenades or simple things like that. I'm okay--albeit only partially--with us not having things to say in cutscenes but if we had a few things to say to what we did during gameplay that'd be awesome.

“Throwing grenade!” “Waiting half an hour!” “Throwing grenade again!”

*Takes a moment from playing the WONDERFULLY MADE Monster Hunter World to say* Look at MHW. Look at the customization. Your character doesn't speak, but at least they have a dozen+ voice options AND you can change the pitch of it. Would it have killed you guys and your deep pockets to, I don't know, hire like 8 or so voice actors, have them say a handful of lines and replies, THEN add a voice slider so you don't have to do MORE work? I guess so. You do you Bungo. *Goes back to playing the VASTLY SUPERIOR Monster Hunter World*

Your guardian has a voice I jumped of the tower a few days ago, IDK why Then there was a yelling sound effect WE HAVE A VOICE

Personally I don't have a big issue with our Guardian being mute and not saying anything. Plenty of games exists where your character is silent. To me the problem is really more that in the cinematics there seem to be clear moments where our Guardian looks like he either is saying something or should be saying something judging by how it is all setup. Almost seems as if they made all the cinematics and then decided not to include the voice recordings for our Guardian. It makes for weird moments. And if they wanted to avoid the hassle of extra voicework for all Guardian race/gender options I even feel that having the ability to choose dialog options without them ever being said out loud would be better than nothing. Small pause in the cinematic, you pick your line and then the cinematic continues. The other characters can then still respond and interact with you without needing Ghost to do all the heavy lifting and being your stand in for everything.

Seriously does this really bother you .Wow

2 RepliesIt’s equivalent to Superman being mute .

1 ReplyWhat bothers me is that our guardian had a voice in the vanilla destiny. Then it just went away cause Bungie

As annoying as it was to not have a voice in the story, I find the ghost to be even more annoying. I just want the ghost to STFU already. I really don't like how they added so much "whimsy" to the dialog in D2. The game needs to be more serious. The lore and backstory demands it.

Even Master Chief and Noble 6 spoke. The Rookie was a mute, but everyone knew it and treated him as such. Every cutscene has the Vanguard getting angry at us for not answering and letting the Ghost talk for us instead.

I dont get why we cant choose a voice and then have some dialogue options. That way it still feels like your guardian

17 RepliesIronically, Bungie themselves helped prove just how disastrously bad their decision was, when they did that cutscene between Osiris and Sagira in the preview for "Curse". We see Osiris and Sagira walking (and floating) along together. We see the differences in their personalities: the intense and driven Osiris, and the more restrained and practical Sagira. For the first time since the scene on Venus, where you irritate Ghost by calling him "little light", we see a Ghost and Guardians as a team. It didn't help that so many of their cutscenes played to the deep weakness of a silent Guardian. The worst I remember is the one where Sagira departs and Ghost returns to himself, and he has all these questions about what's happened. Not only are you incapable of explaining (the cutscene could have been rewritten so that you did, even without Guardian dialogue), but Ghost is confused and upset at what happened. You can't reassure him, you can't focus on the task at hand, all you can do is throw yourself against the portal like some mindless brute. The Rancor in "Return of the Jedi" showed as much intelligence. Also, this conflict reprised itself at the end of the DLC. Firstly, your Ghost's line makes no sense, because Sagira's line "our Guardians were amazing" is true. We did all the shooting, but Osiris did his part as well. And second, a simple throwaway line by you could have been really dramatically effective; something like "I know who my Ghost is". At that moment, you would have shown that you understand your Ghost's feelings of insecurity and possessiveness, and assure him that he has nothing to worry about. Restoring your Guardian's voice would maybe be difficult, given how many reliable voice actors would be needed (though Nolan North could probably do all three male ones himself, just like conversations between Pokémon's Ash Ketchum and his mom were actually Veronica Taylor talking to herself). But I think it would improve the story, especially the cutscenes.

but if we had a few things to say to what we did during gameplay that'd be awesome.
No. That’s gay. Didn’t you have a voice in D1? I don’t care much for the series anymore, but if I ever go back I don’t want to have to listen to the same kind of obnoxious shit you have to put up with in the latest Ghost Recon. Besides, Master Chief was silent. The Rookie didn’t have a voice. The people who wrote that article are grasping at straws.

A silent protagonist can work but it doesn't here. During cut scenes it just looks awkward. My character makes gestures like it wants to say something but, just like Bungie finds making content, words are hard. Instead of being the star of my own little story i'm reduced to Ghosts sidekick. He gets to do all the talking while I do everything he says. They need to change the tag for the game "become legend, be your ghosts bitch while you silently follow orders".

Edited by Seraph: 1/30/2018 9:42:26 PMIve said it before and I’ll say it again, a silent protagonist doesn’t work if you ( the game developer ) are trying to tell a cinematic campaign. Every single cutscene where a npc talks directly to the Guardian highlights the utter stupidity of Bungie to make the Guardian 100% mute
-
3 RepliesThe way it's set up now makes it seem as if the ghost is the main character and it annoys me to no end. All of the other guardians talk and what's weirder is that I've never heard Zavala/Ikora/Cayde/Shaxx's ghost speak...yet ours won't shut up.
-
Silent proganonists only work in some games. Destiny is not one of them. Yes having guardians react to certain things while we play might make me feel something instead of piloting an empty vessel. I mean, the little dialogue our characters had in D1 did make an impression albeit Ghost did still do the majority of the talking, but to cut it out completely for D2?! Why?!

It wouldnt be so great, everyone of your lines would be some bad joke

3 RepliesThe problem with having a voice actor for a character is that not only do you have to pay for the voice actor, but also the writers who write the lines, designers making sure everything syncs up, story boarders to make sure that what your character says and does won't seem out of place. And before anyone points out this is already part of the people's jobs, keep in mind that quality is diminished the more attention has to be split. Now, with that being said, I do agree that Guardians need to speak again. The draw of a video game is that it is an interactive, cinematic experience that allows for full immersion, and generally the more you can be immersed, the better the experience. Now obviously each game is different, and some games don't need a protagonist to speak. Destiny though doesn't strike me as one of those games. Destiny 2 made great strides in characterization for it's characters. Zavala feels more like a leader, Ikora a wise mentor, Cayde...well, Cayde. Than there are other characters such as Failsafe, Asher, Hawthorne. Regardless of personal opinion, each character has something to add to make the Destinyverse feel more real. The problem, at least personally, is that this all grinds to a halt whenever my Guardian enters a room. Nessus is a perfect example. When my Guardian is searching for Cayde and finds him, you can see the Guardian motioning, as if getting ready to say something, only for Ghost to suddenly take over. Mercury again, the moment Ghost returns to his shell and is, understandably worried and confused, the Guardian tries to force his way into the Infinite Forest and, rather than be like "Dude, what happened?", Ghost is like "Hold on, I remember now!". Finally, at the very end, Ikora claims that she is close friends with the Guardian. Except it doesn't feel like she is. If you played vanilla D1, you can kind of see it. After the Black Garden, Crota, Oryx, SIVA, your Guardian is MVP of the Tower. If you didn't, or are like me and switched from Xbox to PSN, than your Guardian is a newbie Guardian. Well, than how about Io some might say? Ikora does say you helped her through that. But how? By showing up? Correct me if I'm wrong, but it doesn't feel like we do much. Ikora's down in the dumps, we show up, she discovers the Red Legion are messing with the Traveler, and she suddenly gets all gung ho? What did she think the Cabal did at the beginning? Gave the orb a sweater? It felt more like Io was just a box that needed to be checked than anything else. Now imagine if the Guardian spoke? On Nessus it was the Guardian who kept trying to ask Cayde what happened? We can build a snippy, snarky relationship. On Mercury we can show how we're a team with Ghost by comforting him and explaining things. And we can cash in on a relationship with Ikora by her remembering an inspirational speech from back on Io. I'm not writing this for education or to make a case, kind of preaching to the choir in this thread. I'm saying it in the hopes that Bungie reads this and works on fixing these issues. With Destiny as it is, I feel more like I'm watching snippets of a movie before being able to just mindlessly shoot stuff rather than being immersed in a story. And that is exactly how video games fail. TL;DR : Destiny's ability to tell a story is horribly stunted by the fact that you can replace my Guardian with a wooden plank that can carry a gun and almost nothing would change.

1 ReplyPerhaps it's a thing with bringing back the voice actors, idk. But if that's the case then at least make a reason for why we can't talk. Could've happened through Ghaul's attack or something.

I believe the ghost is actually the guardian and your simply his or her minion .
Yes, being a mute protagonist certainly doesn’t help. When we had barley any lines in D1, it wasn’t great, but now, being completely silent and having Ghost speak for us at every turn, that completely destroys any semblance of us feeling like an actual hero instead of a void of blank space.

”The best voices - the voices that truly matter - never allow themselves to be heard.
When did our guardian last talk? Before we fought the Heart of the Black Garden, before we began to heal the Traveler and make a name for ourselves, all within one year of our resurrection.
In this case, all Bungie would have to do is allow you to be the “hero Guardian,” one with a generic last name or callsign (Hawke, Shepard), where you pick either a first name, or add on a number at the end if you’re an exo (Hawke-7). Record lines for different races and genders (seriously, there isn’t that much dialogue in this game where that should be an issue), and you’re on your way to making players feel like they’re controlling an actual character in the story.

Helm of the Silent One
Who is the only guardian important enough to have their own exotic, and be completely silent? Our guardian. The Silent One is our guardian’s name.

3 RepliesOMG yes. I hate that my guardian is mute. What idoit thought that was smart to have the ghost doing all the damn talking
-
7 RepliesThis is yet another example of Bungie completely ignoring the desires of the community. From what I have seen, I believe the majority of the player base wants to hear our Guardians speak as they did in Vanilla D1. But Bungie said “nope, we are smarter than you guys” and ignored us once again.
