  • Canada has a police force who's sole duty is to make sure you speak french, and use french labels instead of English labels. Sooooo free

Those factors are bullshit Freedom is based on privacy and speech laws(including censorship). Trying to quantify it based on anything else is stupid

    • Yeah sure whatever. If I ranked the economies of countries by the proportion of sheep to people then Mongolia would be way up there. But I'd prefer to use actual economic qualities. Similarly I'll accept a freedom ranking from something using qualifiers that rank freedom.

    • Not sure I'd agree with one of the least free, but it's definitely not among the most free. There's a lot of other metrics and rankings (such as press freedom, for example) that confirm this as well.

    • I can go to jail for speaking my political beliefs here in Canada. I also lose a large portion of my income to pay for crappy healthcare that I don't want. We are not that free.

          • Canada is NOT more free than America. Last I checked recently, you can get arrested for "offending" Islam or saying the wrong gender pro-noun here. You can also get arrested for "bullying" online when that was trendy for the Liberals to jump in on years ago. If I drew a picture of a reverse gender Prophet Muhammad with goofy eyes and posted it online. Could I get arrested and fined? Would I get arrested and fined in America? I also want to point out, that "ok to be white" sign stuff going around? Is an arrest-able offence around the East apparently. Some Canadian outlets were calling on people to call the police for hate-crime if they see that sign. Ridiculous....

How is Hong Kong number 1 on that list? They don’t even have a proper democracy. The country is owned by China, one of the least free countries on earth. Their “elections” consist of candidates that China selects. Not sure what criteria the makers of this list use to determine “freedom” but I would of thought free and democratic elections should be a major factor. Obviously not. http://amp.timeinc.net/time/2948545/hong-kongs-people-are-left-wondering-how-long-they-will-have-to-wait-for-genuine-democracy

                        >When you try to quantify freedom using math but you forget no other country has a second amendment so they don't have any ability to fight for their freedom if and when their government becomes a dictatorship. >When half the things you mention don't even relate to freedom lmao Divorce? Disappearances? Violent conflicts? Wtf?
