Something is Wrong with Destiny 2 PvP

I'm just gonna say it. If Dice had developed Destiny, the Faction Wars game mode would have made the final cut and we would be having dogfights with our ships right now. Our guardians would be climbing into captured spider tanks with wicked faction paint jobs to wreck each other in massive battles on epic landscapes. Now, i'm not expecting that level of epic (though it would be nice), but i don't think something like a 10vs10 game mode is too much to ask for in a modern AAA fps multiplayer game. Bungie doesn't exist in a bubble, it's okay to make comparisons with the competition. The pvp system Bungie uses is a joke. Once apon a time, we were told that this franchise would be epic, but there is nothing epic about the crucible. 4vs4 was great.....in 2001. Why is it that other AAA fps developers can run large scale sandbox matches, but Bungie couldn't even handle 6vs6 without it's peer to peer system massively favoring the host, outright booting players way too often and creating constant red bar lag so ridiculous that some players were seemingly warping around the maps? I don't buy this "in Destiny 2 we're focusing on competitive esports" crap that i see white knights using as a defense for dropping all player counts to 4vs4 in pvp, it's garbage. Even if it were true, if the pvp system were solid they'd still include a larger casual sandbox mode in Destiny 2 pvp. A wide variety of pvp modes is standard fare in modern fps gaming. Instead of fixing what was broken I think it was just cheaper to drop the player count and call it a day. I suspect there are far more players who just want to jump into some fun than there are who want serious sweaty tiny arena matches, F that nonsense. Some of us have kids, if i need to go afk for a minute or two to clean up puke, i'm gonna do that. In a tiny 4vs4 game mode that's gonna hurt my team, and that makes me feel bad, nobody wants to play a game that makes them feel bad. Whearas with a larger sandbox mode i wouldn't even be missed. If Bungie seriously wants to aspire to join the esport community i think that's great, but don't try to force it on all of us. Build it up on the side, or if Destiny 2 is good enough to be worthy, let it grow out of the game naturally. I followed the development of this franchise for years before it's tumultuous launch and i am still in love with the idea of Destiny, but having played the D2 beta i'm left disappointed. I had hoped that D2 would be a fresh start, an opportunity to improve not just pve but pvp too. Instead we got this, "We're moving all activities in pvp to 4vs4" -Luke Smith, an admission of failure in the understanding and execution of modern fps pvp gaming. The crucible in D2 is nothing but two steps backward. Bungie isn't supposed to be a 3rd rate developer, but in the pvp department they don't even come close to what others have achived. Maybe the idea of Destiny is just too much for these guys to handle, a bridge too far.

  • Why do idiots that play this game still have hope? All these hopes and dreams you have for this shit excuse for a sequel will never see the light of day. This game is dogshit with potential. Just like destiny 1 was dogshit with potential. The PVP is complete shit. Just a bunch of clans pub stomping solo que players in quickplay when there is actually a competitive playlist. But "good players" seem to want to stomp on average players to feel good about themselves. Not to mention, it's slow as -blam!-.. Literally just stay at the back of the map and mida duel which basically consists of players peeking in and out of cover for 10 minutes until finally somebody gets bored as -blam!- and just pushes/dies. Bungie said -blam!- options, we are going to make matchmaking RNG? Lol? Story was some shit that a 13 year old would enjoy, but from what i've noticed, the majority of this games fanbase are probably older. Like 40 percent of the exotics were just ported from D1 which is imo, -blam!-in ridiculous. The hopeless bungie dick riders will say "ohh you guys are complaining that D1 is the same as D2 but Call of Duty and Madden do the SAME THING." Ok? well is that even a valid excuse? You're basically saying, other fanboys get -blam!-ed in the ass.. why can't we? And even if you throw that argument out the window.. they could have at least added all completely new exotics if they were going to release a game that is barely different from its predecessor. And to all the fanboy sheep that are too brainwashed to actually come to terms with the fact that Bungie/activision is -blam!-ing its fanbase in the ass.. idk? can't help you? sheep will be sheep. Deej out

    • PVP is dogshit, not only do solo players get -blam!-ed by campy team players but its difficult to come across a gun fight against one person. Its bad enough we cant choose a -blam!-ing game mode to begin with. Its a stupid way of playing multiplayer

    • Somehow I didn't hear about 4v4 only until just the other day and yeah I just can't do it. There's no way I'm getting Destiny 2 day one now. Probably gonna wait a year like I did with D1 or at least until they fix this. I was ready to jump in even with all the other regressive (IMO) changes they've made but 4v4 only is too much. I don't want to play that. It really sucks too cause Destiny 1's pvp was really the only pvp I've ever liked enough to play for more than a week and I mainly played Clash cause I was able to work on my skill without being counted on too much. I wasn't even really hoping for larger game types though I wouldn't have minded them. I just wanted to be able to hop on after work and relax with some Clash and occasional Control but since every game mode is just gonna be a variation of sweats now I'm gonna have to pass.

      • If me and my friends wanted to screw around and have fun we would play big team battle in Halo. The large teams allowed chaos, and vehicles only added to the mayhem and outright hilarious moments that would happen on occassion. Running through a field and suddenly you see a guy get turned into roadkill by three guys in a warthog doing donuts? Fun times. In Destiny 2 the 4v4 doesn't allow that. You cant mess around, you cant wander and see random stuff happen. The lack of randomness or variety will only lead to people getting bored and doing something else...like playing another game.

        • PvP in destiny should be garbage. That'd cause all the Sweaties to leave, PvP to die, and (hopefully) Bungie to start paying attention to the majority of it's playerbase.

          • For what it is, I'm enjoying Destiny 2 crucible. Unlike a lot of people, I enjoy the emphasis on primary gunfights, accuracy and team play, over repeated supers, OHKs, and ability spam. However, I can't disagree with your criticism of Destiny 2's lack of advancement in the realm of multiplayer shooters. If anything, we have regressed in variety, as there is no rumble or combined arms style mode. When "4v4" was announced for all modes I was sorely disappointed, given Bungie's pedigree for creating large set piece battles within a PVP context(Think Sandtrap on Halo 3). In Halo 3 there was ground to air combat, a variety of vehicles, drivable bases, twice the game modes, all with better multiplayer performance over the network. Battlefield 1 has ground to air, Titanfall 2 has Titans, Overwatch has character based gameplay similar to mobas, Battlefront has large scale battles, while Destiny 2 has 4v4 "competitive" modes with about as much variance in gameplay as OG CounterStrike. I hope this thread gets more attention than the incessant whining about class balance, higher time to kill, and not being able to pop 4 freebie kill supers per match. It's almost if Bungie reduced power in the game to keep the feedback community crying about insignificant bullshit so that the focus would be on that instead of expanding gameplay. So far it's working. Later they'll add Mayhem(with constantly spawning heavy) to appease people who want easy kills and mindless gameplay.

            • I can't disagree more with your initial stance. Small multiplayer is a design decision and not a shortcoming. It might not be the type of game for you, but that doesn't make it poorly designed. This is actually exceptionally well designed 4v4 IMO. a couple small complaints aside, I think this game makes pvp in Destiny 1 feel like a joke... that said, I hope they don't let the chase for solid competitive pvp negatively affect pve. The one strike isn't enough to get a great feel of the pve, but I'm a little worried.

                    • If you think D1 pvp is good right now I don't know what to say. I quit D1 because of how absurdly unbalanced its pvp is. At least in D2 my gunskill wins and I don't have to die to one shot sticky nades every time my opponent is about to die. Sure, there are problems with D2s pvp but, it's better than D1. I still don't see it as anywhere near a competitive game though. It's some hot garbage compared to the real comp shooters out there now.

                      • No offense @OP, but you do realize that there are a number of successful models for PVP FPS's? Battlefield built its success on being one of the best big-team shooters on the market. CoD built its success on smaller, more frinetic action and fast paced gameplay. Overwatch and R6: Siege are built around MOBA elements, where each character and map has a certain strategy to it; where the meta is dictated by strategies. I think Destiny more closely fits into the latter, where each character brings something unique to the table; and D2 seems to be fitting subclasses to particular roles on a team. That does take away from player choice however. Battlefield is a mixed example depending on which battlefield you're talking about. Battlefield 1 (2016) is seeing a steady flow of player drop off, where Battlefield 4 still has reasonable concurrent players; both of these are mostly on PC though. No one's talking about Hardline though. Besides, Destiny 1 was looking more and more like CoD over the years, and I think that genre of shooter is dying out. Infinite Warfare was dead not long after launch, Titanfall 2 has fallen into obscurity. Yet, slow paced tactical shooters like R6: Siege, Counterstrike, and Overwatch have been on a steady rise. I think it's more of a "wait and see" for D2 PVP. You're right that developers shouldn't try to reach that Esports market, that it should come out naturally. But maybe D2 will take hold. If it doesn't, they can always reverse it and try something else. All about finding a niche really.

I'd like to see at the least Clash and private matches that can run 6 v 6. It will be a real shame to have to leave 2 people behind after a raid to play crucible. For that reason alone I'll probably be playing less crucible. Not to mention that I won't be leaving it to matchmaking and be one of 4 random people against a full team of 4 just to get mercied. At least when there were 6 v 6 matches you were more likely to be against 6 random people or a team of 3 or 4 and couple of randoms and I could use matchmaking

                          • The thing bungie never understood- I don't care how long matchmaking takes if I get to play my favorite game mode. When I wanted to play combined arms it always took forever to matchmake, so now its a weekly playlist and control is is a bimonthly. That definitely decreases the variety not increasing it. Will players like 10v10s as much as you think? probably not But it does't matter bungie because two game modes a week just don't cut it. Personally what makes me happy in crucible is to operate on the edges of the map doing 1v1s with stragglers and optimally getting 1-2 kds. That is all and that don't work in 4v4s. So bungie matchmake for connection first skill second and get us some dang 6v6s and 10v10s and get us some well built maps. Hint: B in the beta can not be held. B is supposed to be a tactical position. Five different sightlines and no cover is not a tactical position. The reason you should battle to get B in the first few seconds of the game is because it will be harder to take later. The defenders should have more cover and better sightlines than the attackers.

                            • This is exactly what I've been saying. Sequels are supposed to include MORE not take stuff away! 6v6 is already quite small in 2017, why are they making it even smaller? I'd kill to have a 10v10 or more mode where it felt like a real sci fi battlefield in space. Also, on consoles the game is only 30fps making the argument of this being a more competitive experience a complete joke. An FPS with only 30 frames per second is an absolute joke. At 30fps it caps off at being nothing more than casual. It's insane the budget they have and they can't even manage a good framerate.

                                • You lower the player count so that the game is more methodical and down into 1v1 duels. Which in turn makes the game easier to adjust and balance. Lowering the player count makes the game more competitive theres no denying that. Im not saying it was a right or wrong move to lower the match cap, but if they want to go full esports then this is a step in the esports direction. Just look at high level tekken 7 and it will show how intricate a competitive video game can be when you breakdown to a 1 on 1. My problem with the esports direction is that it doesnt seem like the realistic route for destiny. Does anyone with competitive gaming experience really think that destiny will ever be completely balanced? Lets just look at exotics, you are probably going to have to ban a bunch of shit just to make it competitive then bungie will have to hammer out those weapons to fall in line all while fixing other glitches, game bugs, adding content, pro tour organizing, all while not -blam!-ing over pve. Who ever is calling the shots (who is probably not apart of bungie, or even plays video games) is gping the risky gamblers route with esports. Esports will explode your sales and revenue and make you the most money. If you -blam!- it up tho, because its hard to balance and spend time on with pve in the mix its gonna -blam!- up your sales and youre gonna have a failure for a product because all that time you were focuesd on pvp pve is probabpy going to be and feel negelected. The pve route is the safer route but will never generate as much cash as the esports route. The people who will stick to destiny forever are the pve people tho. Having people who stick around fpr pve is guarnteed money and they will tell their friends and the game will grow slowly, but surely as long as your pve content is top notch. Also pve content is alot easier to balance than pvp content cause no one really gets super salty because they killed a boss too fast or something. It still probably wont make as much cash as the esports route will but its guarnteed easier money. Plus since you focus less on pve balancing you can focus on pvp being more fun than competitive. Obviously balance will still be needed but everything doesnt have to be as even or fair.
